PRE-HEAT

Two methods of applying pre-heat are by gas torch, (propane) and electric resistance heating. Both methods
are equally effective depending on joint configuration and pre-heat temperatures required which shall be
determined by the combined thickness of the joint the CEQ% and the heat input KJ/MM

The method of application, temperature or temperature range shall be as specified on the applicable WPS as
shall the method of measuring the temperature, contact touch pyrometer or temperature crayon, the latter
being less accurate as it does not display an exact temperature reading.

For material thickness’s less than 50mm the temperature shall be measured 4x t away from the edge of the
weld prep at the face facing the welder up to a maximum of 50mm.

For material thickness’s greater than 50mm the temperature shall be measured 75mm from the edge of the
weld prep on the opposite side to that being welded allowing 2 mins per 25mm of thickness for temperature
equalization.
