Insulin Pump Control System

Generic products or customized products

- Based on Insulin Pump Control System case study, the system is a generic
products. This system is own by the developer company which in this case
from health organization. People that suffer from diabetes will use the system,
but they dont have the right to make adjustment to the system. The
requirement needed come from the developers, they already have the
necessary requirement to develop the system. Once the system is developed,
users can buy the system and use it as health care device attach to their
body.
Recommended essential attributes of good software
- Dependability and Security
o Insulin Pump Control System is a safety-critical system, so the system
cannot malfunction when patients use the system as this may cause
harms to the users even death. Safety measure should be there, to
ensure the system do not overdose the users of the products.
- Efficiency
o Insulin Pump Control System should be developed with efficiency, as
patients who use it will have to use it daily attached to their body. A
long live battery is needed, thus optimize of battery use should be there
to ensure the battery can last long.
- Acceptability
o Insulin Pump Control System must be need to be acknowledge by
users. As they are the one who use it daily. They need to accept that
the system can help patients to control sugar level in their blood.
Application Types of System
- Embedded control systems
o The software controlling this system is an embedded system, which
collects information from a sensor and controls a pump that delivers a
controlled dose of insulin to a user. The software will use a micro-
sensor embedded in the patient to measure some blood parameter that
is proportional to the sugar level. This is then sent to the pump
controller. This controller computes the sugar level and the amount of
insulin that is needed. It then sends signals to a miniaturised pump to
deliver the insulin via a permanently attached needle.
Ethical Issues
- Releasing the systems without proper testing conducted.
o Insulin Pump Control System is a safty-critical system, withour proper
testing patients who suffer diabetes will suffer the consequences from
any issues from the failing system. It may causes serious condition in
temporary brain malfunctioning and ultimately unconsciousness and
death.

Best Methodology
- Waterfall
o A thorough process need to be conducted to ensure this safety-critical
system will be developped as required.
o Waterfall model will have a chain of process from planning,
requirement gathering, system and software design, implementation &
unit testing, integeration & system testing and operation &
maintainance.
o In planning state, the cost and duration of the system developped is
calculated.
o In requirement gathering state, all necessary requirement must be
obtained. How much insulin needed when certain sugar level in blood
reads by paramater. When is the last insulin injection.
o In implementation & unit testing state, developer will start building the
Insulin Pump Control System as gathered requirements. Then they will
test each of the components works.
o In integeration & system testing state, all the component will be
integrate and tester will conducts testing whether the system can
deliver the correct dose when needed.
o In operation & maintainance state, after all the testing is completed,
system will be sold and use by the patients and the support will help
users if the users did not understand how to use the system.

Reason And Why It Is Better Than Other Methodolgy

- Waterfall model is used rather than other methodolgy because the process in
waterfall is very thorough step by step and all process need to be completed
before proceed to next stage.
- If using prototype model, the system will not go a thorough planning and
requirement gathering as they will starts to develop a series of prototype
device and conduct the testing whether the system can function as a good
Insulin Pump Contol System or not. These series of prototype will also cause
a lot of budget needed by the developer company, as they need to purchase a
lot of hardware to complete a different prototype device.
