Lesson Planning
Instructional Objective(s) & Learning Target: Clear objectives written in the form of student learning.
By the end of the lesson, the students will describe different characteristics of insects.
Learning Target:
I can identify and describe different characteristics of insects.
Instructional Steps: Highlight & label differentiated strategies (content, process, product). Pacing
Write ‘F.A’. to denote where & how you will monitor progress toward learning objective/student
understanding. Use the assessment name Assorted Assessments . Describe if needed
Underline HOT questions (and expected answer): content development
Begin by having students watch a butterfly video on youtube. While students are observing
video, place a butterfly life cycle worksheet at students’ seats.
Prior to releasing students, explain how we are using pasta to model each stage of the life
cycle. Ask students : “Why do you think we are using these certain shapes of pasta to
20 min
represent each stage of the life cycle?” (Because they sort of look like each stage.)
Explain procedures, how students will begin by coloring their butterfly, and when they are
called on, they will come to the teacher table to select the four different pasta shapes and
must tell the teacher which stage on the worksheet to glue each pasta shape.
F.A- listen to student response to the different stages of the butterfly life cycle to check for
understanding.
End the lesson by having students identify other animals that have a life cycle like the
butterfly. Have students clean up materials and return to carpet for a brain break.
Lesson Closure: Teacher talk. Restate the main take-aways from the lesson. Pacing
Great job today kiddos! I loved seeing all of your beautifully colored butterflies! As we are learning 5 min
about insects and other animals in science, it is important we understand how they come to be! We
are going to do a quick brain break before we move into intervention.
Lesson Adjustment: What have you learned about students’ understanding of the content based on the formative
assessment? If proficiency was not demonstrated, what next steps (reteaching) are required? Include evidence.
Students demonstrated understanding of the butterfly life cycle, as well as how we can use different objects to
represent/model nature.
Reflection on Teaching: Analyze and evaluate your lesson delivery and class management.
I believe I did a good job at setting procedures and expected outcomes of students, as well as my expectations for
them as we complete the butterfly life cycle worksheet.
