SHORT DESCRIPTION:

The Independence Memorial Tower

surrounded by artificial water body is a sight
to behold. The artificially lightened tower
creates a fantastical environment that is
completely new and awe—inspiring to the
people of Bangladesh.

Constructed on Suhrawardy Udyan , this glass tower is a tribute the nation’s victory
in the great Liberation War. The whole Independence Monument consists of the
Tower, an underground Liberation War museum and Shikha Chironton. There is also
the full transcript of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibar Rahman’s historical speech at
then Race Course Maidan on March 7, 1971. The tower is 150-feet high. The tower
is artificially lightened every evening from sun down till 12:00pm.
This Suhrawardy Udyan, previously called Race Course Maidan, is famous for
many things. It was here that Bangabandhu gave his historical speech in the
presence of millions of people on March 7, 1971. The defeated Pakistani Army
surrendered to the victorious Bangladeshi and Indian joint-forces at this ground on
December 16.

THANK YOU
LIBERATION WAR

‘One of the brutal genocides of the world’

Liberation war of Bangladesh is one of the shortest and bloodiest wars of
modern times. The Guinness Book of Records lists the atrocities in
Bangladesh as one of the top 5 genocides in the 20th century. (R.F:
Guinness Book of Records 2007, pp 118-119)

The liberation movement of Bangladesh was not only limited to nine

months of freedom fight, but it was shaped through a process of long
termed evolution. It was a revolution to save culture, it was a struggle to
speak in ones own language, it was a protest to have
one’s own right and finally it was a war to save humanity.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF BARISHAL AT LIBERATION WAR:

Operation Barishal was a code-name of naval operation conducted by Pakistan

Navy intended to free the city of Barishal, East Pakistan from Mukti Bahinis and
the dissidents of the Pakistan Defense Forces.

It was the part of Operation Searchlight. Since the starting of Searchlight, the
Bahinis had been staging large scale sabotage missions, disturbing the
communications and signals operatives in East Pakistan.
The Naval
Intelligence found traces to the city of Barisal, therefore decided to conduct
the operation.
The Barisal was part of Searchlight and was to provide logistic support to the
Pakistan Army, by
first deploying the Pakistan Navy's gun boats and navy personnel on grounds.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF 30 GODOWN:

occupation forces and mass killing ground during the Liberation War in
