INTRODUCTION OF THE PROJECT

Name of the project- NATIONAL SCHOOL OF DRAMA

Location of project- NAVI MUMBAI, MAHARASHTARA
Type of project- EDUCATIONAL

India developed the art of dramatics in the 2nd century BC with plays like mrcchakatika by Sudraka,
Svapna Vasavadattam by Bhasa. The enacting of religious epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata, of
course, had been a part of the culture since times immemorial.

We, Indians don’t realise the wealth of the heritage bequeathed to us. Why it is that today, we the Indians,
have the least acknowledge of what is held within the boundaries?

How is that we know about every other development in the world but are unconscious of our past? And
still have not realised that it is time to take pride in our past?

It is dramatics which has been considered to be the psychology of the unconscious. It is the outward and
visible sign of an inward and probable culture which is staged in a theatre. It is necessary for making the
coming generation aware of what most of the educated youth today are not aware of; the roots of our
great nation. To pass on what we have and have had since ages and to keep them aware of how a rich
culture has shaped us to have a rich inner self. It implicates what Shravan Kumar had in his heart, what
dilemma Arjun faced (to make them think twice) and how a king(Ram) gave up everything just to keep
the words of his father, for its stages the epics, the romantics and the tragedies.

It is important since, this broken link needs to be mended and the under developed modern, needs to plug-
in with the disconnected past. For not only does it cater to an institution but puts forth the situation faced
by the common man, provides light to the various complex issues that need to be tactfully handled. And
at last, to keep the legacy going.

“I REGARD THE THEATRE AS THE GREATEST OF ALL ART FORMS, THE MOST IMMEDIATE
WAY IN WHICH A HUMAN BEING CAN SHARE WITH ANOTHER THE SENSE OF WHAT IT IS
TO BE A HUMAN BEING”. -OSCAR WILDE

JUSTIFICATION OF THE PROJECT

 The country has only two drama schools with potential for providing the necessary ingredients.
They are located in Delhi and thrissar (both at opposite ends), the intake is of 20 students per year
which is very less for a nation with current count of 333 million literate youth.
 Therefore, more centres are required, which provide connect between the past and the future
(higher level studies rather than diploma course as providedat NSD).

 Infrastuructre for such an educational field requires to be strenghthened. This should create a
comparatively under-stressed zone in today’s education system.

 The existing drama school, built over 50 years ago, has no campus with modern facilities to
boast of.

AIM

 Aim behind this project is ‘Introducing this art form at educational level, as it always has been the
most trust worthy medium of keeping hold on the past’.
 To develop a facility, in a league of international institutions, which help us to cater to the causes
requiring extreme attention.

OBJECTIVES

These are as follows-

 To create an architectural icon that provides opportunities to a vast multitude of people to excel in
the fields of dramatics. It would also increase the base of education for better opportunities.
 To understand cohesive development.
 To study lighting architecture.
 To study flexible theatres.
 To study acoustics.
 To study the people and professions influenced by dramatics.
 To study the standards and norms for drama school.
 To kindle public interest in this field (in a Bollywood owned country) with the organisation of
various theatre utsavs.
