Self-Management Skills

Self-management skills are features that support an individual to be more productive in

various aspects of life. These skills can help an employee to efficiently work together and

communicate with colleague, managers, and even clients. Employees can also be able to make

informed decisions and enhance time management through the help of self-management skills.

Problem-solving skill is one of the self-management skills I would like to improve and

strengthen.

Poor problem-solving and communication skills can limit effectiveness of leadership.

The effect of applying ineffective problem-solving skills can cause many challenges and

problems to an individual and also at corporate level (Robinson, 2020). Poor problem solving

skills have limited my organizational leadership since it has caused operational inefficiencies,

such as unreliable performance in production, material waste and prolonged production cycle

time. The emergence of these problems on our products have become a company’s area of

concern as well as an issue for our clients. Poor problem solving skills are also limiting my

leadership when they take place in less tangible ways like customer dissatisfaction, demotivated

employees and regulatory compliance issues.

Effective problem solving is the ability to utilize facts and balanced assumptions to

examine a difficult situation to achieve a fair solution. Challenges can be technical requiring

reliance on well-established approaches of problem solving (Visone, 2018). Problems can be

interpersonal in nature, particularly related to employees. For instance, a team member can be

having differing opinion or conflicting idea. To solve such a problem I will have to resolve it

objectively so as to enhance my leadership outcome. Effective self-management skills requires

an individual to be good in decision making. It is the ability and willingness to break down a

complex project or issue to get a solution. To be a good problem solver, I must be able to think

over difficult situations, examine problems, and evaluate and review solutions to improve my

leadership outcome. Also, good problem-solving skills are interlinked with good communication

skills.
