delightful Japanese manga series illustrated by the talented Misaki Takamatsu. The series
revolves around the endearing duo of Skip, a spirited young boy, and Loafers, a laid-back cat
with a penchant for laziness. Together, they embark on a multitude of adventures that capture
the essence of friendship, whimsy, and the joys of everyday life. Skip and Loafer is romantic
comedy and slice-of-life anime, written and directed by Kotomi Deai. It is based on an ongoing
manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Misaki Takamatsu. This animated
series was produced by P.A. Works, known for series such as Canaan, Kuromukuro, Akiba Maid
War, and Aquatope on the White Sand.

The story unfolds in a quaint town where Skip resides with his family and Loafers often lounges
about. Skip, with his boundless energy and curiosity, is always eager to explore the world
around him, while Loafers prefers to take life at a leisurely pace, content to nap and observe
from the sidelines. Despite their contrasting personalities, Skip and Loafers share a deep bond
and complement each other perfectly. One of the recurring themes in the series is the
importance of friendship and acceptance. Skip and Loafers encounter a diverse cast of
characters, including other animals and humans, each with their own quirks and idiosyncrasies.
Through their interactions, the series celebrates diversity and encourages readers to embrace
the uniqueness of others.

It’s surprisingly difficult to explain what exactly I enjoyed so much—and found so fascinating
about—last season’s Skip and Loafer. Is it the heart-melting sweetness of its characters and the
fluffy feeling it always leaves me with? Is it the way it handles heavy themes that are relevant to
contemporary teenagers? Well, contradictory as it might sound, it’s both. As these folks
observe, by simply describing the show’s plot and its warm-and-fuzzy tone, “it’d be really easy
to get the impression that Skip and Loafer is saccharine and frictionless when it’s much more
nuanced than that”. The series threads the needle between grounded coming-of-age story and
cosy comfort show, and much of this is achieved through a masterful combo of realism and
nostalgic, romantic not-so-realism that still speaks to the emotional reality of being a teen

The manga's artwork is both charming and expressive, capturing the nuances of Skip and
Loafers' personalities with warmth and humor. Takamatsu's illustrations breathe life into the
characters, from Skip's exuberant expressions to Loafers' nonchalant demeanor, creating a

visually captivating world that readers can't help but be drawn into.As Skip and Loafers navigate
their adventures, they encounter a wide array of scenarios that range from the mundane to the
fantastical. From embarking on treasure hunts to solving mysteries, each chapter offers a new
and exciting escapade for the duo to embark on

Along the way, they learn valuable lessons about teamwork, empathy, and the importance of
embracing life's unexpected twists and turns.Despite the lighthearted nature of the series, "Skip
and Loafers" also touches on deeper themes such as perseverance, self-discovery, and the
passage of time. Through their adventures, Skip and Loafers experience growth and
development, learning more about themselves and the world around them with each passing
day.Throughout the series, Takamatsu infuses her storytelling with a sense of whimsy and
wonder that captivates readers of all ages. Whether they're embarking on a whimsical journey
through a magical forest or simply enjoying a lazy day at home, Skip and Loafers' adventures
are filled with charm and heartwarming moments that resonate with audiences far and wide.

This series has a simple storyline. A girl named Mitsumi Iwakura (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa)
goes to Tsubame West High School, a school in Tokyo, with the goal of becoming a rural planner
in her hometown. She leaves her friends, such as Fumino “Fumi” Toyama (voiced by Sumire
Morohoshi), behind. While walking to school, Mitsumi believes everything is going her way, but
gets lost. She is helped by another student, Sōsuke Shima (voiced by Akinori Egoshi). Somehow,
they both get to the opening ceremony just in time, allowing her to give a speech to the
incoming class. However, thanks to their fast running, she throws up onto her teacher, earning
her the nickname of “barf girl.” And that’s only the first episode.

The interactions between Mitsumi and Sōsuke are at the center of Skip and Loafer. They learn
more about each other and cheer up one another, if one of them feels down. While there are
some romantic feelings between them, they are undoubtedly good friends who support each
other, even if times get tough. That is part of the great storytelling in this anime..

Admittedly, I had not originally planned to watch Skip and Loafer. Reading Alex Henderson’s
review of the first episode for Anime Feminist, convinced me otherwise. This view was
reinforced by the spring premiere digest on the same site. It described the series as a “sweet
coming-of-age story” with an anxious, driven, and endearing female protagonist. The review
also said the series had a “positively depicted trans guardian” named Nao (voiced by Mitsuki
.

Saiga). After watching all twelve episodes of the first season, I have to agree with their
assessment. However, there is a lot more to the show than the assessment by these reviewers.

There are hilarious moments in each episode. This is especially the case when it comes to
Mitsumi’s antics, or when the reality of people is hidden. This humor is not based off any tropes
or common stereotypes. Even so, it makes you empathize with the characters, endear them to
you, and make you interested in learning more about them as people.

Best of all, despite how perfect the relationship feels, the story still manages to include organic
conflicts between the characters. This isn’t just reserved for the two main leads. Yuzu and
Makoto are two of Mitsumi’s friends who seem like polar opposites. Where Yuzu is fashionable,
popular, and charismatic, Makoto is casual, unknown, and distrustful. Despite Yuzu’s
enthusiasm for meeting another girl to befriend, Makoto purposefully pushes the other girl
away, coming up with the illogical conclusion that someone as beautiful as Yuzu would never
actually care about a girl like her, and by that extension, Yuzu’s excitement must be fake. This
assumption Makoto makes despite not even attempting to talk to Yuzu is incredibly realistic and
understandable based on Makoto’s position in school, and it makes their resolved conflict and
deep friendship all the more rewarding.

A special shoutout must also be made to Nao and her later mentorship and friendship with
Egashira. Nao is Mitsumi’s transgender aunt, and the story gives her so much grace, personality,
and life to explore. It shows the absolute joy Nao is as a person and the life she leads without
completely brushing aside the journey she took to get to where she was. People whisper
around her, and she has painful memories of her past, but what she knows now is that she’s
thriving and is an incredible person.

And despite the main story’s focus on Mitsumi and friends her age, Nao is given an extended
role in her relationship with Egashira. Egashira, who was initially antagonistic towards Mitsumi,
deals with a lot of self-doubt, something Nao recognizes all too well

as part of her own journey with her gender identity. Nao quickly takes the girl with a haughty
mask under her wing to help the younger girl love and assert herself more. The most beautiful
aspect of this friendship is how Egashira reacts to Nao: she embraces Nao for who she is
without any hesitation and is so happy for the guidance and support Nao is willing to spare for
her that she becomes one of Nao’s closest friends.
