Averages

Average is defined
Sum ofasValues
a single value that represents a set of values. The formulae used to
Average 
find the average is number of all values
Total

For example if individual heights of ten students in a class are (heights are given in cms)
167, 172, 165, 142, 132, 158, 169, 174, 155 and 166 then the average height of a student in the
class is

= = cm

Eg. 1. Find the average of first 26 natural numbers

Solution
Average of first 26 natural numbers = (1 + 2 + 3 + … + 26) / 26

We know that 1 + 2 + 3 + …… + n =

Therefore 1 = 2 = 3 …. + 26 = 26×27/2 = 351.

The required average = 351/26 = 13.5
Eg. 2
The average of five consecutive even numbers is 16. Find the smallest number
Solution
Let the smallest number = x
The numbers are x, x+2, x+4, x + 6 and x +8

The average of the numbers =

The smallest number is 12

1
Eg 3
There are 20 students in a class. Their average weight of the students in the class is 39 Kg. If
the teacher weight is included the average weight becomes 40 Kg. The weight of the teacher i
Solution
The total weight of students = 20 x 39 = 780
The total weight of class (Including teacher’s weight) = 21 x 40 = 840
The teacher’s weight = 840 – 780 = 60 Kg.
Average is also called as Mean. The average discussed earlier, is Arithmetic Mean
(AM). There are other means viz. Geometric Mean (GM) and Harmonic Mean (HM).
Geometric Mean (G.M) is nth root of the product of given ‘n’ numbers. Hence geometric
mean of two numbers say x1 and x2 is . Similarly geometric mean of three numbers say

x1, x2 and x3 is and so on

Geometric Mean of given ‘n’ numbers =

Harmonic Mean of given ‘n’ numbers = .

For example geometric mean of 9 and 16 is calculated as below

GM=

For example, harmonic mean of 4,5 and 6 is = = =

AM, GM, and HM satisfy these inequalities:

( Note: Equality holds only when all the elements of the given sample are equal.)

Eg.4. Find the geometric mean of 27, 125 and 216

GM= 3×5×6=90
Combined average of two or more groups

2
If there are two or more groups of observations/value whose averages are given then the
combined average is calculated as below

Combined Average X=

Where N1 and N2 are the number of observations in group1 and group2 and X1 and X2 are the
averages of group1 and group2 respectively.
Eg.5. There are 20 boys and 30 girls in a class. The average height of boys is 146 cm. The
average height of all the students in the class is 143 cm. Find the average weight of the girl
students.
Solution
The total height of boys students = 20 x 146 = 2920
The total height of the class (including boys and girls) = 50 x 143 = 7150
There fore the total height of girl students = 7150 – 2920
= 4230
The average height of girl student = 4230/30 = 141 cm

If there are distinct distances given and the speeds taken by vehicle to travel the distances
are given then the average speed is calculated as below

Eg. 6. An aircraft travelled from city1 to city 2 and from city 2 to city 3 and from city3 to city 4
at the speeds of 350 kmph, 420 kmph, and 540 kmph respectively. The distances between city
1 to city 2 , city 2 to city 3 and city 3 to city 4 are 1050 kilometers, 1050 kilometers, and 1000
kilometers respectively. Find the average speed of the aircraft.

Solution :

Time taken to travel from city1 to city 2 =

Time taken to travel from city2 to city 3 =

Time taken to travel from city3 to city 4 =

3
Average speed =

If an object or a person moves from point A to point B at a speed pf ‘x’ kmph and returns
from B to A at a speed of ‘y’ kmph then the average speed is calculated the using below formula

Eg.7. A man moves for a point A to B by bicycle at a speed of 14 kmkh and returns for B to A
by a car at a speed of 42 kmph , find the average speed of his entire journey.
Solution:

Average Speed =

= 21kmph
Average of natural numbers and progressions

Sum of ‘n’ natural numbers =

The average of ‘n’ natural numbers can be computed as: Average =

The average of 1, 2, 3 ….upto n =

The average of 12, 22, 22, … n2 =

Sum of arithmetic progression

a+( a+d)+(a+2d)+…….+ l =

where a = first term , l=last term, d=common difference and n =number of terms in the
progression
4
Average of all numbers in an arithmetic progression =

Eg.8. Find the average of 6, 11, 16 ………106

Solution:
Clearly the given series is arithmetic with first term 6 with the common difference 5 and the last
term 106.

The average = =

Eg.9. If a square’s side 40 cm is increased by 20 percentage, find the average of the areas of the
squares.
Solution:
The area of the first square = 40×40 =1600
The area of the second square = (1.2×40) +(1.2×40) = 48×48 = 2304

The average of the areas = Sq.cm

Eg.10. The average monthly income of A and B is Rs 24000/-.The average monthly income of B
and C is Rs 20000/-. The ratio of the monthly income of A and C is 13:9. Find the monthly
income of B.
Solution:
Let the monthly income of A and C as 13X and 9X
The total income of A and B = 24000×2 =48000
13X+B = 48000… eqn1
The total income of B and C = 20000×2= 40000
B+9X= 40000…eqn 2
Subtracting eqn 1 and eqn 2
4X = 48000-40000= 8000
X =8000/4 = 2000
From eqn1 the monthly income of B =48000-13X=48000-13000×2000 = Rs 22000/-

2Y – Y = 15000 and Y =15000 and X= 30000
There are 5 members, both the families put together
Let the average earning of a member be E
Total average earning = X+Y = 3000+15000 = 45000

5 × =45000

Average earning per member = Rs 9000

Solution: Since the ratio is 7: 5
Arun’s earning = 7X
Let the earning of Kumar = 5X

7X - 5X = 2000 X =

Kumar’s earning = 5X=5000 & Arun’s earning =7X=7000

Varun’s earning = 3× Arun’s earning = 3×7000 =21000

Average earning =

29. Option b
Solution: Let the average salary of the managers X and the average salary of the sales
executives = Y
3 X + 12 Y = 240000
3 ( 4Y) + 12y = 240000

(Since mangers salary = 400% of sales executive salary X= Y = 4Y)

12Y + 12 Y = 240000
Y = 10000
Therefore the Manager salary per month = 4Y= 4×10000 = Rs 40,000
