EXPERIMENT NO- 5 MACHINING A KEYWAY BY USING SLOTTING MACHINE AIM: To make an external key way in a given workpiece using shaping machine. TOOLS REQUIRED: «High Speed steel shaping tool Parallel block # Vernier Calliper + Try Square © Scriber + Center Punch ‘+ Angle protractor + Ballpen hammer MATERIAL REQUIRED: Mild steel rod: 42x22mm PROCEDURE: + Check the dimensions of the given workpiece by using Vernier calliper. + Hold the workpiece in the machine vice + Fixthe cutting tool in the tool post rigidly + The stroke length is adjusted to 60mm (ie. clearance at the back side is 1S mm and front side is 10mm) by using stroke adjusting hand wheel. + The speed of the ram is calculated by using cutting speed as follows and set in the machine. + Cutting speed =n(1+m)/1000 m/min + Where cutting speed for HSS tool working in mild steel=24m/min + N= number of double strokes/minute. PROCESS SHEET FOR SHAPING A SLOT: Job Material [ Tool TOperation | RPM/Strokes/min | Cutting Feed Depth of | Time taken | | Material speed (mm/rev) | cut (Sec) | (mm) Le Length of the stroke in ram me ratio of return time to cutting time(2/5) Number of double strokes/minute (n) =(Cutting speed*1000)/L (I+m) The table is moved near the tool so that the tool should make initial cut in the job. After the initial cut, the job is to be kept away from the tool. 1mm depth of cut is given in the tool head by using down feed hand wheel. The top surface is machined by moving the table horizontally using table feed arm for a value of 0.5mm per double stroke. Mark the slot profile on the work piece as per given dimensions by using angle protractor, scriber, center punch and ball peen hammer. Start the machining process and rotate the down feed hand wheels to the required dimensions. Check the dimensions of the slot and correct to the required dimensions. RESULT: ‘Thus an external key way is machines using shaping machine as per the given dimensions.
