Minimum Viable Product

The term was popularized by Eric Ries in his book

“The Lean Startup.”

The version of a new product which allows a team to

collect the maximum amount of validated learning
about customers with the least effort.

A minimum viable product should prove two

concepts: that developing product is actually
feasible and that customers are willing to pay
for the app.

WHY BUILD AN MVP

Learn if there’s a market for your business idea

Collect valuable insights about the needs of

target audience for further product development

Gain an understanding of the product’s potential

Collect the feedback from first adopters

Start to build a base of loyal users

6
HOW TO DEVELOP AN MVP

1. Identify the problems/need

2. Define your target market

3. Map out a user flow

4. Prioritize theh features(s)

5. Identify the materials and Identify

the steps to build your MVP
7
HOW TO PRIORITIZE FEATURE(S)

Focus on the main purpose/function of the

product.
What core feature (or set of features) will best solve the main problem I want to solve for potential
users?

What core feature (or set of features) will best resolve the main pain point that my users have?

What feature (or set of features) will help me test market viability for future versions of my product?

Focus on the identified features based

on the user flow.

USABILITY TEST

The method used in the design thinking process which

evaluates the product, feature or prototype with an end
user.

Users are usually given tasks to to perform with the

product, prototype or feature.

While the user carries out the task, the designer observes,
asks questions and takes notes.

User testing allows designers to gain inspiration, overcome

their biases, and be guided.

16
WHY USABILITY TEST

17
USABILITY TESTING METHOD

In-person.
Formal, live testing of representative users requires an
empathetic moderator to note testers’ experiences.

Remote.
Catching users in their own environment can reveal more-
accurate “field” insight

Guerilla.
Testing your design informally on passers-by/colleagues.
The risks may include inaccurate data.

18
GUIDELINES WHEN PLANNING A USABILITY TEST
1. Show, don’t tell: Let your user’s
exerience the prototype

2. Ask users to talk through the

experience

3. Observe your participants

4. Ask follow-up questions

5. Negative feedback is Your Way to

Learn and Improve

24
RED ROUTE ANALYSIS

• A red route analysis allows

users to pinpoint what features
they consider of importance to
their journey on a website/app.
• Additionally, it helps prevent
the addition of unwanted
features.
• This is extremely useful in
highlighting features required to
optimise the design and provide
guidance for usability testing.

25
RED ROUTE ANALYSIS

Your product’s red routes are:

• Frequently utilized: Tasks
performed by your users 80%+ of
the time
• Widely used: Tasks performed
by more than 80%+ of your user
base
• Money drivers: Tasks crucial for
the success of your business

26
CLASS EXERCISE

1. Develop an MVP Board for your product.

2. Develop a Usability Test Plan Dashboard for your product.

Submit through eLOK before the class ends.
