TEF Canada

TEF Canada is an obligatory test for economic immigration programmes that


require proof of linguistic ability, at the request of Immigration and Citizenship
Canada.

TEF Canada also provides indispensable proof of the holder’s French language
proficiency when he/she applies for Canadian Citizenship.

The Test d’Évaluation de Français pour le Canada (TEF Canada) is a test of


general French which assesses the level of proficiency in French of
francophones and non-francophones alike.

The TEF Canada is recognised as official proof of language proficiency by


Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) as well as the Ministère de
l’Immigration et des Communautés Culturelles du Québec (MICC) for
permanent residency applications, certificat de sélection du Québec
applications and Canadian citizenship applications.

Why take the TEF?

Level of proficiency

The TEF Canada assesses the candidate’s proficiency in French using a 7 level
scale based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
(CEFRL) and the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB).

Candidate profile
The TEF Canada is directed specifically at candidates wishing to assess their
level of proficiency in French for immigration applications to Canada or
Quebec, or for Canadian citizenship applications.

The TEF Canada is recognised as official proof of language proficiency


by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) and the Ministère de
l’Immigration et des Communautés Culturelles du Québec (MICC).

What is tested?
TEF Canada assesses your ability to write and speak French, using the following
sections:

• Oral comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions


• Written comprehension: 60 minutes – 50 questions
• Oral expression: 15 minutes – 2 topics
• Written expression: 60 minutes – 2 topics

You will receive a certificate with your TEF Canada results.

It details your score for each section. To find out the Canadian Language
Benchmark (CLB) corresponding to your score, please refer to this Table of
correspondence with CLB.

The TEF Canada consists of 4 modules: listening, speaking, reading and/or


writing.

• Compréhension écrite (reading): 60 minutes – 50 questions – 300 points


• Compréhension orale (listening): 40 minutes – 60 questions – 360 points
• Expression écrite (writing): 60 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points
• Expression orale (speaking): 15 minutes – 2 topics – 450 points

TEF – Test d’évaluation de français


French proficiency test
TEF is a French proficiency exam awarded by CCIP, the Chambre de Commerce
et d’Industrie de Paris. It was originally created in 1998, and today has five
different versions which are recognized variously by the French Ministers of
Education and of the Interior; the Canadian Department of Immigration,
Refugees and Citizenship; and Québec’s Minister of Immigration, Diversity and
Inclusiveness (MIDI).

Test d’évaluation de français


TEF (and its online version e-TEF) is an internationally recognized evaluation of
French comprehension and skill. Two of the five components are optional:

1. Listening comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions


2. Reading comprehension: 60 minutes – 50 questions
3. Vocabulary and structure: 30 minutes – 40 questions

TEF pour les études en France


TEF pour les études en France is specifically aimed at foreigners wishing to
enter a French undergraduate program. The certificate is valid for five years.

1. Listening comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions


2. Reading comprehension: 60 minutes – 50 questions
3. Vocabulary and structure: 30 minutes – 40 questions
4. Writing skills: 60 minutes – 2 topics

TEF pour la naturalisation


TEF NAT tests on the spoken French skills of those wishing to immigrate to
France.

1. Listening comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions


2. Speaking skills: 15 minutes – 2 topics

TEF adapté au Canada


TEF Canada evaluates the French level of skilled workers, candidates wishing to
immigrate to Canada outside of Québec, and applicants for Canadian
citizenship.

1. Listening comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions


2. Reading comprehension: 60 minutes – 50 questions
3. Speaking skills: 15 minutes – 2 topics
4. Writing skills: 60 minutes – 2 topics

TEF pour accès au Québec


TEFaQ (and its online version e-TEFaQ) is specifically aimed at candidates
wishing to immigrate to Québec. It’s primarily concerned with oral
communication – the reading/writing components are optional.

1. Listening comprehension: 40 minutes – 60 questions


2. Speaking skills: 15 minutes – 2 topics

How is the TEF graded?


Upon completion of any of the exams, candidates receive a detailed analysis of
their French skills and a score of 0 to 6. Here’s how that corresponds to
the official CEFR scale.

Program Description

Duration: About 6-8 Months

Days and Class Timing: Classes in batch sizes of about 2-4 students are held on
weekdays and weekends.
