DANGER
Danger due to igniting deposits
During use in potentially explosive atmospheres deposits from heavy metal oxides (rust)
can ignite due to friction, impact or friction sparks and lead to an explosion.
• Ensure through the use of an enclosure or other suitable measures that heavy metal
oxide (rust) deposits on the coupling are not possible.
• Ensure that the drive is switched off no later than 5 minutes after the fusible safety plug
(103) has responded.
DANGER
Danger due to bursting of the coupling
The coupling may burst if it is not used properly. There is a risk of fatal injury from flying
fragments. Personal injury, property damage and fire damage caused by sparks may oc-
cur. If a coupling bursts in an area at risk of explosion, then this can result in an explosion.
• Use the coupling for the purpose for which it is intended.
DANGER
Risk of explosion when using coupling parts without Ex marking
Coupling parts without Ex marking have not been approved for use in potentially explosive
atmospheres. These coupling parts can lead to an explosion during operation.
• Only use couplings with Ex marking in potentially explosive atmospheres.
DANGER
Danger
Risk of injury due to the use of unsuitable and/or damaged components. The use of unsuit-
able and/or damaged components can lead to an explosion in potentially explosive atmo-
spheres.
• Observe the information regarding conditions of use.
DANGER
Danger of explosion
Improper operation of the coupling can lead to an explosion in potentially explosive atmo-
spheres.
• Please observe the notes concerning operation of the coupling in potentially explosive
atmospheres.
DANGER
Danger from hot coupling parts
Risk of injury due to hot surfaces. Hot coupling parts can lead to an explosion in potentially
explosive atmospheres.
• Wear suitable protective equipment (gloves, safety glasses).
• Ensure that the area is not at risk of explosion.
WARNING
Risk of chemical burns from chemical substances
There is a risk of chemical burns when handling aggressive cleaning agents.
• Please observe the manufacturer’s instructions on how to handle cleaning agents and
solvents.

Application
FLUDEX couplings are designed for use in all kinds of machines.
The illustration shows the different types with their components using the types FAD and
FAR as examples.

163 Screw plug
The FLUDEX coupling consists of an inner rotor and a housing supported on it. The inner ro-
tor includes the hollow shaft (106) on which the bucket wheel (105) is mounted. The housing
includes the cover (102) and the blade shell (101), which are connected to each other via a
flange bolt connection.
The housing and the inner rotor are double mounted one inside the other and sealed by
shaft sealing rings.
For filling the coupling, two filling plugs (153) are located in filling channels offset by 180° (to
prevent overfilling). For this purpose, offset at the periphery (approx. 60°), there is a screw
plug (163) in the coupling flange. This is used for bleeding during filling, for checking the fill
level and for draining the operating fluid. The fusible safety plug (103) is opposite to this.
In the standard version, the fusing temperature of the fusible safety plug is 140 °C. This seal
is made of NBR (for a maximum continuous operating temperature of 85 °C). As an up-
graded standard (for continuous operating temperatures up to 110 °C and/or synthetic oil),
the coupling can be equipped with seals made of FPM. In this case, a fusible safety plug with
a fusing temperature of 160 °C is used in the coupling.
NOTICE
Couplings for use in potentially explosive atmospheres are designed with 110 °C fusible
safety plugs. These fusible safety plugs are also marked with the Ex symbol.
The fusing temperature of the fusible safety plugs is stamped on their front panels. The
screws are also colour-coded:
• 110 °C is yellow
• 140 °C is red
• 160 °C is green
In applications where frequent drive malfunctions or blockages are possible, thermal monit-
oring is recommended. It can be used to prevent leakage and loss of the operating fluid and
the associated contamination and danger to the environment. The transmitter (EOC system)
or the thermal circuit breaker (mechanical switching device) is screwed into the coupling
flange instead of the screw plug (163). The fusible safety plug (103) stays in the coupling as
an emergency backup.
In a coupling with NBR seals (standard version) and a 140 °C fusible safety plug, a thermal
circuit breaker with 110 °C fusing temperature can be used instead of the screw plug (153).
In a coupling with FPM seals and a 160 °C fusible safety plug, a thermal circuit breaker with
140 °C fusing temperature can be used instead of the screw plug (153).
When using the EOC system (transmitter fusing temperature of 125 °C), a 160 °C fusible
safety plug is also used with seals made of NBR.
Type FAO only includes the components of the hydraulic coupling (without add-on) and of-
fers a flange connection on the output side. The types FAK, FAD, FAE and FAM have an N‐
EUPEX coupling on the output side for mounting on a shaft. Types FAKB and FADB are
FAK or FAD couplings with a brake drum. Type FADS is a FAD coupling with a brake disk.
Type FAR is a coupling with a V-belt pulley on the output side.
The N‐EUPEX coupling contains elastomer components in standard hardness.
WARNING
Severe personal injury due to improper transport
Severe personal injury due to falling components or due to crushing. Damage to coupling
parts possible due to use of unsuitable means of transport.
• Only use hoisting gear and load lifting devices with sufficient load bearing capacity for
transport.
• The symbols which appear on the packaging must be observed.
If not specifically contractually agreed otherwise, the packaging complies with the HPE Pack-
aging Directive.
NOTICE
Property damage due to improper storage
Negative changes to the physical properties of the coupling and/or coupling damage.
• Please observe the procedure for storing the coupling.
The coupling, unless specifically ordered otherwise, is supplied with preservation and can be
stored for up to 3 months.
• Do not store the coupling together with corrosive chemicals, acids, caustic solutions, etc.
• If the coupling contains elastomer components, ensure that there are no devices in the
storage room that produce ozone, such as fluorescent lights, mercury vapour lamps or
high-voltage electrical equipment.
• Store the coupling on suitable supports or in suitable containers.
Long-term storage
NOTICE
Property damage due to improper long-term storage
Negative changes to the physical properties of the coupling and/or coupling damage.
• Carefully observe the specifications for long-term storage.
1. You can find the required type of preservative agent in the following table (Types of pre-
servative agents for long-term storage).
2. Remove the elastomer components. These must not come into contact with cleaning
agents and long-term preservative agents.
3. Clean the coupling parts.
4. Apply the stipulated preservation to all external surfaces except the aluminium housing.
5. Store the coupling parts and the elastomer components separately.
DANGER
Danger due to bursting of the coupling
If you do not observe the information stipulated here regarding assembly, this can lead to
bursting of the coupling during operation. There is a risk of fatal injury from flying frag-
ments. If a coupling bursts in an area at risk of explosion, then this can result in an explo-
sion.
• Please observe all the stipulations concerning assembly.
FLUDEX coupling
No preparatory work is required, since the coupling is supplied finish bored, grooved and bal-
anced. Balancing is performed to customer specifications or as standard according to the
half-parallel-key agreement (DIN ISO 21940-32) to balancing quality G6.3 (DIN ISO 21940)

CAUTION
Physical injury
Risk of injury from protruding set screw.
• Please observe the information about selecting the set screw.
Use set screws in accordance with ISO 4029 with a toothed cup point. The size of the set
screw is determined by the bore made. The set screw should fill out the threaded hole as
much as possible and must not protrude beyond the hub.
NOTICE
Property damage to coupling part 1 (1)
If you completely drill through the base of a flexible element pocket on coupling part 1 (1),
then coupling part 1 (1) is no longer allowed to be used for operation.
• Please observe the stipulations about machining the balancing bore.
NOTICE
Property damage resulting from damage to braking surface of coupling part 32 (32)
or 13 (13) or 8 (8)
Operational malfunctions can occur if the braking surface of coupling part 32 (32) or 13
(13) or 8 (8) becomes damaged.
• When machining the balancing bores, make sure that you do not damage the braking
surface of coupling part 32 (32) or 13 (13) or 8 (8).

• Brake drum (13) with coupling part 3 (3), with FADB
• Brake disk (8) with coupling part 5 (5), with FADS-HB (see ⑨ in figure “Position of the
balancing bore for two-plane balancing”)
• When total balancing, mark the position of the components relative to one another.
NOTICE
Coupling damage, damage to further components
Risk of damage to the coupling through fitting forces by way of the aluminium housing.
• Ensure that the fitting forces are not applied via the aluminium housing.
• Use suitable hoisting gear.
NOTICE
Damage to property
Damage to the elastomer components from cleaning agents.
• Ensure that the elastomer components do not come into contact with cleaning agents.
NOTICE
Damage to property
Damage to the shaft end, the coupling parts and/or the parallel key.
• Note the handling instructions regarding assembly of the coupling parts.
4. Pull the coupling on until it comes into contact with the shaft shoulder.
5. Secure the FLUDEX coupling axially using the retaining washer (140) and retaining
screw (141).
The tightening torques are listed in Chapter Tightening torques and widths A/F
(Page 80).
1. Unscrew the set screw out of coupling parts 1 (1), 2 (2), 4 (4), 5 (5), 9 (9), brake drum
(13) or brake disk (32) until a collision with the parallel key or the shaft is no longer pos-
sible.
2. Clean the bores and shaft ends.
3. Coat the bores of coupling parts 1 (1), 2 (2), 4 (4), 5 (5), 9 (9), brake drum (13) or brake
disk (32) and the shafts with MoS2 assembly paste (e.g. Microgleit LP 405).
4. Model FAD: If you have dismantled the coupling part 3 (3), mount the coupling part 3 (3)
on the shaft before fitting the coupling part 2 (2).
5. Place coupling parts 1 (1), 2 (2), 4 (4), 5 (5), 9 (9), brake drum (13) or brake disk (32) on
the shaft. The coupling part is to be installed with the entire bore length until it comes
into contact with the shaft shoulder.
WARNING
Danger due to bursting of the coupling
If you do not observe the information stipulated here when assembling coupling parts with
a tapered bore, then this can cause the coupling to burst in operation. There is a risk of
fatal injury from flying fragments. If a coupling bursts in an area at risk of explosion, then
this can result in an explosion.
• Place coupling parts 1 (1), 2 (2), 4 (4), 5 (5), 9 (9), brake drum (13) or brake disk (32)
with tapered bore and parallel keyway on the shaft in cold condition. Secure the coup-
ling parts with suitable end plates without pulling the coupling parts further onto the
cone (fitting dimension = 0).
Information
Coupling parts with cylindrical bore
To facilitate mounting, you can heat the coupling parts 1 (1), 2 (2), 4 (4), 5 (5), 9 (9), brake
drum (13) or brake disk (32) with cylindrical bore up to a maximum of 120 °C if necessary.
Note the temperature range of the flexible elements (12) when doing this (see Section N-
EUPEX flexible elements (12) (Page 82)). Remove the flexible elements (12) if necessary.
Protect adjacent components against damage and heating to temperatures above 80 °C.
6. Secure coupling parts 1 (1), 2 (2), 4 (4), 5 (5), 9 (9), brake drum (13) or brake disk (32)
with a set screw or end plate. When securing with a set screw the shaft must not pro-
trude or be set back from the inner side of the hub.
7. Tighten up the set screw or the screw to attach the end plate to the specified tightening
torque TA (for the set screw please see section Machining an axial locking mechanism
(Page 30)).
8. If you have removed the flexible elements (12), reinstall the flexible elements (12).
9. If you have removed coupling part 3 (3), screw coupling part 2 (2) or 13 (13) to coupling
part 3 (3) hand tight.
10.Screw coupling part 2 (2) or 13 (13) to coupling part 3 (3) with the specified tightening
torque TA (see SectionTightening torques and widths A/F (Page 80)).
11.If you have removed the N-EUPEX coupling of type FADS, reassemble the parts. Ob-
serve any markings regarding total balancing that might be provided.
12.For type FADS-HB , screw the brake disk 8 (8) and the coupling part 5 (5) together by
hand. Then tighten the bolt connection with the specified tightening torque TA (see Sec-
tion Tightening torques and widths A/F (Page 80)).
13.Screw the coupling part 6 (6) and the brake disk 8 (8) or brake drum 32 (32) together
hand tight. Then tighten the bolt connection with the specified tightening torque TA (see
Section Tightening torques and widths A/F (Page 80)).
14.Screw the coupling part 7 (7) and the coupling part 6 (6) together hand tight. Then
tighten the bolt connection with the specified tightening torque TA (see Section Tighten-
ing torques and widths A/F (Page 80)).
The shafts that are joined by the coupling are never on an ideal precise axis but have a cer-
tain amount of misalignment.
Misalignment in the coupling leads to restoring forces that can stress adjacent machine parts
(e.g. the bearings) to an unacceptable extent.
The misalignment values in operation result from the following:
• Misalignment due to assembly
Incorrect position due to a lack of precision when aligning
• Misalignment due to operation
Example: Load-related deformation, thermal expansion
You can minimise misalignment by aligning after assembly. A lower misalignment in the
coupling has the following advantages:
• Reduced wear of the elastomer components
• Reduced restoring forces
• Misalignment reserves for operation of the coupling
You can find the maximum permitted shaft misalignment values during operation in Chapter
Shaft misalignment values during operation (Page 79).
Consult with Flender if the FLUDEX coupling is bolted to components which introduce axial
forces or bending moments into the coupling.
With type FAO (without add-on coupling), there is no need for alignment or it depends on the
components supplied by the customer.

Figure 5-6: Possible misalignments
① Axial misalignment (ΔKa)
② Angular misalignment (ΔKw)
③ Radial misalignment (ΔKr)
Set the axial misalignment ΔKa to a value within the permissible tolerance range for the “S”
clearance.
The values for clearance “S” can be found on the cover sheet or in the order-related coupling
drawing.
Determine the value ΔS (ΔS = Smax - Smin). The determined value ΔS may not exceed the
value ΔSperm. The values for ΔSperm can be found in Chapter Shaft misalignment values dur-
ing operation (Page 79).
If required, you can calculate the angular misalignment ΔKw as follows:
ΔKw [rad] = ΔS / D3
ΔKw [degrees] = (ΔS / D3) · (180 / π)
If required, you can calculate the permissible angular misalignmentΔKwperm as follows:
ΔKw perm [rad] = ΔSperm / D3
ΔKw perm [degrees] = (ΔSperm / D3) · (180 / π)
D3 corresponds to N-EUPEX size in mm
For N-EUPEX size, see Chapter Shaft misalignment values during operation (Page 79).
ΔSperm see Section Shaft misalignment values during operation (Page 79).
Determine the value ΔKr. The determined value ΔKr may not exceed the value ΔKrperm.
You can find the permissible radial misalignment ΔKrperm in Section Shaft misalignment val-
ues during operation (Page 79).

• Use hydraulic oils HL or HLP according to DIN 51524 part 1 and part 2 of ISO viscosity
classes VG 22 or VG 32 as operating fluid.
• Please observe the manufacturer’s instructions on handling the operating fluid.
• Information on the pour point and flash point is provided by the manufacturer and
refers to typical product values.
• The service life of the oils decreases with increasing thermal load.
Oil requirements:
• Suitability for sealing materials NBR and FPM
• Suitability for rolling-contact bearing with brass cage
• Compatibility with common liquid sealants and adhesives
• Compatibility with aluminium: AlSi9MG; AlSi10Mg
• low tendency to foaming
• Flash point COC min. 200 °C
• Pour point min. 3 °C (setting point min. 5 °C) below minimum ambient temperature
The lubricant manufacturer or the lubricant supplier is responsible for the quality of an oil. If
in doubt, contact your oil supplier.
NOTICE
The oil quality and purity determine the service life of the FLUDEX bearings and shaft seal-
ing rings.

For couplings with seals made of NBR and for continuous operating temperatures from -40
°C to +85 °C.
For couplings with seals made of FPM and for continuous operating temperatures from -15
°C to +110 °C.
For couplings in the food or pharmaceutical industry, lubricants NSF-H1 are listed.
5.4.2 Filling quantity 5.4 Filling the gear unit with operating fluid
The behaviour and performance of the FLUDEX couplings are decisively influenced by the
amount of operating fluid filled in. As the filling quantity increases, the transmission capacity
of coupling, the engine load during start-up and the maximum overload torque of coupling in-
crease. The operating slip decreases at the same load.
FLUDEX couplings may be filled to a maximum of 80 to 85% of the total volume. Larger
filling quantities lead to a strong pressure increase in the coupling during operation. The
pressure increase can cause the coupling to burst.
If you have ordered the coupling with power specifications, the filling quantity is determined
by the factory. The filling quantity is stamped in litres on the coupling and listed on the title
page.
If you have ordered the coupling without power specifications, you can determine the filling
quantity using the tables in the technical data (see Chapter Filling quantity (Page 73)). The
filling quantity for the coupling size is listed as a function of the speed and the power to be
transmitted.
WARNING
Severe personal injury due to flying fragments
Severe personal injury due to flying fragments and/or damage to coupling possible. If a
coupling bursts in an area at risk of explosion, then this can result in an explosion.
• Observe the prescribed filling quantities.
5.4.3 Procedure 5.4 Filling the gear unit with operating fluid
NOTICE
Risk of injury and danger to the environment from operating fluid
Collect any operating fluid that has overflowed completely and dispose of the operating
fluid in accordance with the applicable regulations.
As a tool for filling the coupling and for checking the filling level, there are marking lines with
litre information cast on the coupling housing in raised relief.
1. When filling and/or checking the fill level, turn the mark with the desired filling quantity to
the highest position (12 o’clock).
For intermediate values, select the appropriate intermediate position.
2. To vent the inner room better, unscrew the screw plug (163) inserted in the outer flange
or, in the case of size 222, the second fusible safety plug (103).
The screw (163 or 103) is arranged in such a way that in the event of overfilling, the ex-
cess quantity can drain out there.
3. Fill the operating fluid at the filling plug (153).
Only this filling opening is provided with a filling channel that offers protection against ac-
cidental overfilling. The coupling is filled with the desired quantity when the filling level
reaches the edge of the bore for the screw plug (163) or the fusible safety plug (103).
WARNING
Severe personal injury due to flying fragments
Severe personal injury due to flying fragments and/or damage to coupling possible. If a
coupling bursts in an area at risk of explosion, then this can result in an explosion.
• Observe the prescribed filling quantities.
• Fill the operating fluid at the bore at the filling plug (153).
4. After filling, tighten the filling plug (153) and the screw plug (163)/the fusible safety plug
(103) to the prescribed tightening torque.
For the tightening torques, see Chapter Tightening torques and widths A/F (Page 80).
5. Check the coupling for leakage during a short test run. Hold a sheet of clean paper near
the rotating outer shell of the coupling, parallel to the axis of rotation.
Spraying operating fluid becomes visible on the paper.
DANGER
Severe personal injury due to hot operating fluid
Serious physical injury caused by spraying hot operating fluid during operation.
• Observe the tightening torques for the filling plug (153) and the screw plug (163) / the
fusible safety plug (103).
• Check the coupling for leakage.
In the event of drive malfunctions, e.g. blocking the output side, the coupling may overheat. If
the fusing temperature of the fusible safety plug is reached, the insert melts and the hot op-
erating fluid escapes.
Ensure the housing is designed in such a way that it also provides protection against spray-
ing hot operating fluid without significantly impairing the coupling ventilation.
The filling plug (153) and the fusible safety plug (103) or the screw plug (163) should remain
accessible.
① Spraying liquid
WARNING
Severe personal injury caused by rotating components
Severe personal injury by touching the rotating components.
• Secure the coupling against contact by means of appropriate protective devices.
WARNING
Severe personal injury due to the use of unsuitable housing
During use in potentially explosive atmospheres deposits from heavy metal oxides (rust)
can ignite due to friction, impact or friction sparks and lead to an explosion.
• The coupling, which is made of aluminium, must be provided with stable housing
which excludes a risk of ignition, e.g. due to friction, impact or friction sparks.
• Deposits of heavy metal oxides (rust) on the coupling housing must be excluded by
the housing or other suitable measures.
• The housing must prevent unintentional contact with the coupling.
• The housing must protect against spraying hot operating fluid without significantly im-
pairing ventilation (see also notice on the coupling).
DANGER
Danger of explosion due to use of incorrect fusible safety plugs
If the wrong fusible safety plugs are used, an explosion may occur.
• Only install couplings with fusible safety plug approved for the temperature class for
use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
In order to ensure safe commissioning, carry out various tests prior to commissioning.
DANGER
Danger
Overload conditions can occur during the commissioning of the coupling. The coupling can
burst and metal parts can be flung out. There is a risk of fatal injury from flying fragments.
Bursting of the coupling can lead to an explosion in potentially explosive atmospheres.
• Carry out the tests prior to commissioning.
• Do not touch the rotating coupling.
NOTICE
Coupling damage
Damage to the coupling due to solidified operating fluid.
The operating fluid must be liquid when the coupling is put into operation. The pour point of
the operating fluid must be at least 3K below the minimum expected ambient temperature.
If this is not guaranteed, preheat the coupling accordingly before starting.
1. Check the tightening torques of the screws of the coupling in accordance with section
Tightening torques and widths A/F (Page 80).
2. Check the tightening torques of the foundation bolts of the coupled machines.
3. Check whether suitable housing (ignition protection, coupling guard, touch protection,
protection from splashing liquid) has been installed and that the function of the coupling
has not been adversely affected by the housing. This also applies to test runs and rota-
tional direction checks.

Before dismantling, mark the position of the housing parts on the flange in relation to each
other. For type FAR, also mark the mounting position of the flange of the belt pulley to the
adjacent housing part.
Type FAR
1. With the FAR type, the lubricating oil in the belt pulley cannot be drained off before dis-
mantling. Collect the lubricating oil completely when dismantling the belt pulley.
NOTICE
Risk of injury and danger to the environment from operating fluid
Collect the remaining operating fluid and dispose of the operating fluid in accordance with
the applicable regulations.
Information
Replace the sealing elements each time you dismantle the coupling.
Check the rolling-contact bearings. If they are in good condition, you can use the rolling-
contact bearings again.
8.7 Reassembling the FLUDEX coupling 8.7 Reassembling the FLUDEX coupling
Reassembly is carried out in the reverse order of dismantling. Observe the marking on the
parts.
1. Before reassembly, clean all components from old grease residues.
2. Lightly grease the O-ring (114) to make the assembly easier.
3. Some FAR versions require an oil filling for bearing lubrication in the belt pulley. Position
these couplings vertically. Fill in the required quantity of lubricating oil (VG 220) through
the gap between the hollow shaft and the belt pulley. To find out which FAR versions re-
quire bearing lubrication as well as for notes on rolling-contact bearing lubricating oil and
lubricating oil quantity, see the table in Section Bearing lubrication for rolling-contact
bearing, type FAR (Page 79)
4. Fit the shaft sealing rings (111; 132) with a grease filling between the dust lip and the
sealing lip. For the FAR type, also fit the locking ring/circlip (160).
5. For the version with the additional Fey seal (plates), fill the space between the shaft
sealing ring and the plates as well as the slat receiving flute in the shaft with grease.
6. After removing the old thread and cleaning the sealing surfaces, apply a new thread to
the flange points that were sealed with a sealing thread.
Place the sealing thread in a circle on the intended place of the sealing surface, whereby
the thread ends must cross. The sealing surface must be undamaged and may be lightly
greased to better position the sealing thread.
For tightening torques for the bolt connections, see Chapter Tightening torques and widths
