Fish that live on the sea bottom benefit by being flat and hugging the contours. There are two very
different types of flatfish and they have evolved in very separate ways. The skates and rays, relatives of
the sharks have become flat in what might be called the obvious way. Their bodies have grown out
sideways to form great “wings”. They look as though they have been flattened but have remained
symmetrical and “the right way up”. Conversely fish such as plaice, sole, and halibut have become flat in
a different way. There are bony fish which have a marked tendency to be flattened in a vertical direction;
they are much “taller” than they are wide. They use their whole vertically flattened bodies as swimming

3
surfaces, which undulate through the water as they move. Therefore when their ancestors migrated to the
seabed, they lay on one side than on their bellies. However, this raises the problem that one eye was
always looking down into the sand and was effectively useless - In evolution this problem was solved by
the lower eye “moving” around the other side. We see this process of moving around enacted in the
development of every young bony flatfish. It starts life swimming near the surface, and is symmetrical
and vertically flattened, but then the skull starts to grow in a strange asymmetrical twisted fashion, so that
one eye for instance the left, moves over the top of the head upwards, an old Picasso - like vision.
Incidentally, some species of 20 flatfish settle on the right side, others on the left, and others on either
side.
Question 29. The passage is mainly concerned with _______.

South Korea is developing next-generation military robots that will mimic the movements and
capabilities of birds, snakes, marine creatures and even insects on the battlefields of the future. The
Defence Acquisition Programme Administration (DAPA), which oversees the creation of weapons
systems for the military, has announced plans to develop “biobots” - robots that are based on real
creatures - to be deployed as early as 2024, Yonhap News reported.
There is a recognition that the South Korean military will very soon need to rely more heavily on
technology to defend the nation, with a falling birthrate meaning that fewer young men are available to do
their mandatory national service, which ranges from 21 months in the army to 24 months in the air force.
In addition, there is growing resistance among many men to obligatory military service and the South
Korean government has recently made it easier for some to avoid serving, such as by claiming that it
contravenes their religious beliefs. Others have claimed to be suffering mental illness or have put on so
much weight that they are above the maximum limit for recruits. Another “trick” that exempts a man
from military service is tattoos that cover most of his body.
In the initial stages, bird-like androids or swimming robots will be deployed to carry out
reconnaissance operations, miniature mechanical flying devices will be able to provide information on the
actions of an enemy force and robots that can move like a snake will be able to access constricted spaces.
As well as assisting in military operations, these devices will be able to assist in search-and-rescue
operations and will have applications in areas affected by natural disasters.
The agency said it is turning to designs that have been inspired by the natural world because nature has
engineered animals to survive and thrive in their environments over millions of years. The South Korean
military plans to work closely with domestic technology companies, which are widely seen as among the
most advanced in the world in the areas of artificial intelligence, but have less of a focus on military
applications.

B. because the duration of national military service is too long for men.
C. more men are suffering from mental illness, which means they can’t join the army.
D. the number of young men joining the army is on the decline for numerous reasons.

Question 38. Based on paragraph 3, which of the following is TRUE about the use of “biobots” in the
future?
A. Only snake robots are useful in areas affected by natural disasters.
B. Swimming robots must always be deployed along with flying ones.
C. Bird-like androids will only assist in reconnaissance operations.
D. Small flying robots can be used to gather information about enemy forces.
Question 39. The word “engineered” in the final paragraph can be best replaced by ________.
A. determined B. decided C.designed D. defined
Question 40. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Military robots have been widely used by the South Korean army in various missions.
B. Future “biobots” will only be based on flying and swimming creatures.

correct option that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 34 to 40.
Since water is the basis of life, composing the greater part of the tissues of all living things, the crucial
problem of desert animals is to survive in a world where sources of flowing water are rare. And since
man’s inexorable necessity is to absorb large quantities of water at frequent intervals, he can scarcely
comprehend that many creatures of the desert pass their entire lives without a single drop.
Uncompromising as it is, the desert has not eliminated life but only those forms unable to withstand its
desiccating effects. No moist- skinned, water-loving animals can exist there. Few large animals are found.
The giants of the North American desert are the deer, the coyote, and the bobcat. Since desert country is
8
open, it holds more swift-footed running and leaping creatures than the tangled forest. Its population is
largely
nocturnal, silent, filled with reticence, and ruled by stealth. Yet they are not emaciated.Having adapted to
their austere environment, they are as healthy as animals anywhere else in the word. The secret of their
adjustment lies in the combination of behavior and physiology. None could survive if, like mad dogs and
Englishmen, they went out in the midday sun; many would die in a matter of minutes. So most of them
pass the burning hours asleep in cool, humid burrows underneath the ground, emerging to hunt only by
night. The surface of the sun-baked desert averages around 150 degrees, but 18 inches down the
temperature is only 60 degrees.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the best
answer to each of the following questions 29- 33
Most of us have asweet tooth. We love to eat a cookie, a donut or a piece of chocolate. But have you
noticed what often happens when you eat one? When we eat or drink sugary foods, the sugar enters our
blood and affects part of our brain. We may feel better, but the good feeling stops and we just want
another one. All tasty foods do this, but sugar has a particularly strong effect. This is why many scientists
believe that our love of sugar might be an addiction. In the body, sugar acts like an addictive drug, one
that doctors recommend we all cut down.
It seems obvious now that too much sugar can harm us, but why is it harmful? In early human history,
the body began storing sugar as fat to use as energy. Our bodies are efficient, so they need very little
sugar. Today, the Western diet has the highest amount of sugar in history. There are also more high blood
pressure and diabetes in the world. Some researchers believe that too much sugar may be the culprit.
How do we battle our sweet tooth? Doctors advise us to cut down on sweets. They recommend that we
choose healthy foods for snacks. Nuts, dark chocolate and yogurts are some of them. Yet even healthy
foods can have too much sugar. Yogurts that are advertised as low-fat can have 17 grams, about half the
daily allowance. However, the less sugar you eat, the less you want. Exercise helps, too. Using facilities
such as walking tracks and gymnasiums can help control our desire.

We get great pleasure from reading. The more advanced a man is, the greater delight he will find
in reading. The ordinary man may think that subjects like philosophy or science are very difficult and that
if philosophers and scientists read these subjects, it is not for pleasure.
But this is not true. The mathematician finds the same pleasure in his mathematics as the school
boy in an adventure story. For both, it is a play of the imagination, a mental recreation and exercise. The
pleasure derivedfrom this activity is common to all kinds of reading. But different types of books give us
differenttypes of pleasure. First in order of popularity is novel-reading. Novels contain pictures of
imaginary people in imaginary situations, and give us an opportunity of escaping into a new world very
much like our world and yet different from it. Here we seem to live a new life, and the experience of this
new life gives us a thrill of pleasure. Next in order of popularity are travel books, biographies and
memoirs. These tell us tales of places we have not seen and of great men in whom we are interested.
Some of these books are as wonderful as novels, and they have an added value that they are true.
Such books give us knowledge, and we also find immense pleasure in knowing details of lands we have
not seen and of great men we have only heard of. Reading is one of the greatest enjoyments of life. To
book-lovers, nothing is more fascinating than a favorite book. And, the ordinary educated man who is
interested and absorbed in his daily occupation wants to occasionally escape from his drudgery into the
wonderland of books for recreation and refreshment.
