I. ĐỊNH NGHĨA CÂU HỎI ĐUÔI

Câu hỏi đuôi là câu hỏi ngắn ở cuối câu trần thuật, ngược lại với vế câu đằng trước.
Eg: You’re tall, aren’t you?
Nguyên tắc thành lập câu hỏi đuôi:
Vế đằng trước là (+) thì phần đuôi là (-)
Eg: You play the guitar, don’t you?
Vế đằng trước là (-) thì phần đuôi là (+)
Eg: You didn’t do your homework, did you?

II. CÂU HỎI ĐUÔI VỚI CÁC THÌ

- I am late, aren’t I?
Quá khứ đơn, quá khứ tiếp diễn - He was reading, wasn’t he?

- They like me, don’t they?
- She doesn’t love you,
does she?
- He didn’t come here, did he?
- You came late, didn’t you?

Thì tương lai đơn - She will return, won’t she?

Hiện tại hoàn thành; hiện tại

Quá khứ hoàn thành; quá khứ
hoàn thành tiếp diễn
- It won’t rain, will it?
- We shall go out tonight, shan’t we?
- He hasn’t been here all week, has he?
- They have left, haven’t they?
- She has been studying well, hasn’t she?
- They had been working hard, hadn’t they?
- He hadn’t met you before, had he?

III. CÂU HỎI ĐUÔI VỚI ĐỘNG TỪ KHUYẾT THIẾU

Động từ khuyết thiếu Ví dụ
Can - He can speak English, can’t he?
- You can’t run fast, can you?
Must - We must be patient, mustn’t we?
- All visitors mustn’t report to reception, must they?
 Should - I should keep silence, shouldn’t I?
- I shouldn’t do it again, should I?
Ought to - He ought to do that, shouldn’t he?
- Children oughtn’t to be able to read by the age of 7, should
they?
May - You may see me tomorrow, mayn’t you?
- He mayn’t be a good father, may he?
might - You might join me for dinner, mightn’t you?
- He mightn’t get there in time, might he?

IV. NHỮNG LƯU Ý QUAN TRỌNG TRONG CẤU TRÚC CÂU HỎI ĐUÔI
 Ở phần câu hỏi đuôi phủ định, ta bắt buộc phải dùng dạng viết tắt, không được dùng ‘Not’.
Eg: You are a student, aren’t you?

 Câu hỏi đuôi của “I am” là “aren’t I”?, nhưng nếu là “I am not” thì vẫn là “am I”
Eg: I am going to do it again, aren’t I?

 Đối với câu mệnh lệnh, thì câu hỏi đuôi sẽ là “will +you?”
Eg: Close the door, will you?
Don’t be late, will you?

 Câu giới thiệu dùng Let’s +V.inf, câu hỏi đuôi là “Shall we?”
Eg: Let’s go for a picnic, shall we?
Tuy nhiên: Let me do…., will you?

 Chủ ngữ là “nothing, anything, everything, something....” thì câu hỏi đuôi dùng “it”.
Eg: Everything is ok, isn’t it?

 Chủ ngữ là những đại từ bất định “everyone, someone, anyone, no one, nobody…” câu hỏi đuôi
là “they”.

Eg: Somebody wanted a drink, didn’t they?

 Trong câu có các trạng từ phủ định và bán phủ định như: “never, seldom, hardly,
scarely, little…; nothing, nobody, no one ” thì phần hỏi đuôi sẽ ở dạng khẳng định.
Eg: He seldom drinks wine, does he?
You hardly call each other, do you?

 “This, That...” →......it?

 “These, Those...” →.....they?

Eg: This isn’t your bag, is it?
These are 3 oranges, aren’t they?
 Chủ từ là mệnh đề danh từ, dùng “it” trong câu hỏi đuôi
Eg: What you have said is wrong, isn’t it ?

 Câu đầu có “It seems that + mệnh đề A”, lấy mệnh đề A làm câu hỏi đuôi
Eg: It seems that you are right, aren’t you ?

 Câu đầu là “I wish”, dùng “may” trong câu hỏi đuôi

Eg: I wish to study English, may I?

 Chủ từ là “One”, dùng “you” hoặc “one” trong câu hỏi đuôi
Eg: One can be one’s master, can’t you/one?

 Câu cảm thán, lấy danh từ trong câu đổi thành đại từ, và dùng “is, am, are”
Eg: What a beautiful dress, isn’t it?
How intelligent you are, aren’t you?

 Câu đầu có “I + các động từ sau: think, believe, suppose, figure, assume, fancy, imagine,
reckon, expect, seem, feel” + mệnh đề A, lấy mệnh đề A làm câu hỏi đuôi. Tuy nhiên, khẳng định hay
phủ định phải dựa vào mệnh đề trước.
Eg: I think he will call her back, won’t he?
I don’t think he will call her back, will he?

 Nếu vẫn là cấu trúc trên, nhưng chủ ngữ không phải là I, ta sẽ căn cứ mệnh đề đầu làm câu
hỏi đuôi.
Eg: She thinks that he’s a good man, doesn’t she?

 USED TO → didn’t....?
Eg: She used to live here, didn’t she?

 Had better → mượn trợ động từ HAD để lập câu hỏi đuôi.
Eg: He’d better stay, hadn’t he?

 Would rather → mượn trợ động từ “would” để lập câu hỏi đuôi.
Eg: You’d rather go, wouldn’t you?

 Have to/has to/had to → mượn trợ động từ don’t/doesn’t/didn’t

Eg: You have to learn all the new words, don’t you?

 There + be ………. → câu hỏi đuôi vẫn dùng there

Eg: There was a storm last night, wasn’t there?
