Lesson 5 reviews all vocabulary and structures inlroduced in Lessons 1 - 4 r
Notes to the Student
The American Language Course focuses on four components of language learning:
vocabulary, grammatical síructures, language functions, and skllls.
• The lessons present vocabulary (individual words as well as expressionsl that the
learner needs to understand and use in order to communícate efíectiveJy in English,
Each new lesson builds on the vocabulary af the previous lessons, The language
includcd is appropriatc for Icarners working in profcssional and vocational contexts.
A significan t feature of the General English phase of the ALC is that military
vocabulary is induded wherever applicabEe.
• The presentation of grammar is carefully sequenced. The grammatical structures
presented in the lessons are the forms a language learner needs in order to speak
and write standard English. New grammar is often depicted in charts or tables that
serve to focus thtí learner's attention on the particular Estructure being presented.
• Language functions are the ways we use a language to communicate. In each lesson,
exercises that focus on functions show the learner how and when to use certain
words, phrases, and sentences,
• In addition, language and academic skills excrciKos are intcrspersed throughout the
lessons. These focus on developing the learner's language proñciency in listening,
speaking, reading, and writing-
The Scope and Sequence chart located on the previous page shows the content of the
currenl biiük. The four columns outline the new material as il relates to the language
acquisition components described above, Kach lesson begins with a tahle of contents
followed by a preview page. The preview page provides a fíummary of the new material
presented in the lesson. Each ALC book has four lessons introducing new materia!
and onc rcvicw lesson. These are followed by a homework section and daily evaluation
exercises. Various appendices are aíso included.
The homework and the evaluation exercises are at the back of this text. It generally
takes about two hours to complete the daily homework assignments. The evaluation
exercises are short quizzes that give both the teacher and the student feedback on how
well students have learned the material.
The appendices tblfow the fifth lesson. Appendix A provides an alphabetical list of
new vocabulary presented in this book. The number of the lesson in which each word
or phrase is introduced is provided nexí to the entry. Appendix B presents a list of
grammatical structures introduced in the book; a lesKon number is provided along with
entry for easy reference. The other appendices are included as reference materials.

Vocabulary Changing a fíat tire

When a tire hits something hard,

or when it runa over something sharp,
it may go flat. A tire might also go fíat
after you park the vehicle. Sometimes
a tire loses air slowly whíle the
vehicle sits in a garage, parking lot, or
on the streel. A flal tire can be in the
front or the back of the vehicle.
A flat tire certainly never happens
at a good time. It can happen when
you're driving on a city street, a busy
highway, a mountain road, Or when
you're waiting for a red light to
change. Tires go flat in bad weather,
too. When it's raining, or iths very hot
outside, you'll want to make a quick
tire change.
When you have a flat tire, the first
thing you should do is to movc tlic
vehicle offíhe road quickly. Hurry to
move the vehicle out of traffic onto
flat land; you don't want to get hit by
another vehicle traveling on the road.

There should be an extra tire and

aorae tool3 in your vehicle. In a car,
the spare tire's under a cover incide
the trunk. You will need your key to
open the trunk. On an SUV, the spare
tire is on the back of the vehicle. On a
truck, the apare tire is between the
two rear wheels.
Remove the spare tire» wrench,
and jack from the trunk. Put them on
the ground by the flat tire.
When you change a tire, work
slowly and carefully, Never change a
tire in a hurry. Take enough time to
do the Job safe]y and right.
Use the wrench to loosen the
lug nuts, but do not remove them.
The ñuta fasten the hub cap and the
tire to the wheel, The hub cap covers
the cenler of the wheel.

vehicle near the flat tire. Slowly

Ihe vehicle high enough.
Next, remove the lug nuts and the
hub eup from the wheel. To keep the
lugs safe, put them near the apare
tire or inside the hub cap.
Pulí off the flat tire. Put it under
the vehicle near the jack. The vehicle
could fall off the jack, but the tire will
help you to rgise it again.
After that, put on the apare tire.
Replace the hub cap and the lug ñuta.
Tighten the nuts with the wreoch.
Then, lower the vehicle until the
wheel touches the ground.
Make sure the lug nuts are tight,
They shouldn't be loóse. Your wheel
could come off while you're driving, lug ñuta wrench
and you might have an accident.
Tighten the imts again.
Some final adviue: Be aure to kcep
Finally, remove the jack. Clean the enough air in the apare tire whíle it's
