CONDITIONS FOR COMMON SYMBOL ALLOTMENT

1. On the date of Application, the Party should be a registered Political Party with the Election
Commission of India under the provisions of Section 29A of the Representation of the
People Act, 1951;
2. The Application for Common Symbol Allotment should be received in time as explained
below:-
a. Election on expiry of the Normal Term of the Legislative Assembly or House of
People (as the case maybe) – an application is made at any time during the period
commencing from the date six month prior to the date of expiry of the term of
Assembly/House and latest by five clear days before the date on which the
notification (or the first of the notifications in the case of phased election) of the
election is scheduled to be issued;
b. Election on dissolution of the Legislative Assembly or House of People as the case
maybe – an application is made at any time from the date of dissolution of the
Assembly/House and latest by five clear days before the date on which the
notification (or the first of the notifications in the case of phased election) of the
election is scheduled to be issued;
a. The date on or after which an application for common symbol allotment is made to
the Commission for the upcoming General Elections to the Legislative Assemblies
and Lok Sabha is available at Commission’s website with the path:-

3. A duly filled application should be furnished by the party in the revised prescribed
proforma (on the letterhead of the party) and the required Annexures (I, II & III) should be
enclosed along with the application. Proforma for application for common symbol

4. The Party that has availed of this concession on two occasions shall, however, be eligible
for the concession in any subsequent General Election subject to the condition that on the
previous occasion when the party availed of the facility, the votes polled by all the
contesting candidates set up by the party at the General Election in the State was not less
than one percent of the total valid votes polled in the State;
5. The Party should have conducted its organizational election as per tenure approved and the
applicant should be presently an authorized office bearer of the Party as per the latest
organizational details taken on record of the Election Commission of India;
6. The Party should have submitted reports on contributions received and Audited Annual
Accounts as per instruction nos. 76/PPEMS/Transparency/2013, dated 29.08.2014 and
76/PPEMS/Transparency/2014, dated 14.10.2014, for the last three Financial Years, to the
office of the Chief Electoral Officer of the State where the party is having its headquarters
(proof of service should be attached); and
7. The Party should have submitted Election Expenditure Statement(s) of the Party, as per the
instruction nos. 76/PPEMS/Transparency/2013, dated 29.08.2014 and
76/PPEMS/Transparency/2014, dated 14.10.2014, for the last two elections the Party has
contested (if any), to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer of the State where the party
is having its headquarters (proof of service should be attached).
NOTE: - If an application for common symbol allotment is rejected on any of the above
mentioned reason(s), it is advised that a fresh duly filled application along with necessary
enclosures may be submitted to the Election Commission of India after the reason(s) for rejection
of earlier application has(have) been rectified.
