ELAGO 26 Semester, SY 2023-2024 JD 124 Legal Research and Writing Page of 7 COURSE OVERVIEW JD 124 aims to equip the law student on skills needed on two areas: (1) Legal research; and (2) Legal Writing. This course provides an introductory overview of legal research methods and legal writing, It builds the foundational skills that law students will need as they learn to conduct legal research and write case briefs, legal citations, and legal memoranda. Lawyers cannot provide effective representation unless they master the necessary research skills. At a minimum, lawyers must be able to find and update the constitutional provisions, statutes, regulations, and jurisprudence that determine their clients’ rights and obligations. To that end, the legal research component of JD 124 will introduce law students to core tools and methodologies that will be essential in the next law courses, as well as in future law practice. Legal writing will involve a series of writing, research, and advocacy theory and application to engage the law student in the process of legal reasoning. The course instructs law students in basic methods of legal analysis, effective written and oral communication of analysis, and essential legal research tools and methodologies. COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Apply the law toa specific set of facts; 2. Synthesize judicial opinions and statutes to determine the law; 3.
