Initiating the replacement action with the HPE Primera
UI
Replacing a hardware component begins and ends with software - the HPE Primera UI. You use the software to:

• Select the component being replaced.

• Follow the onscreen instructions to prepare for replacement and identify the component's location.
• Wait for confirmation to complete the physical replacement.
• Return to the software after physical replacement is completed to bring the component back into operation.

Logging in to the HPE Primera UI

Prerequisites
• The HPE Primera storage system has been set up and initialized.
• You know the IP address or fully qualified domain name for the storage system.

Procedure

1. Browse to the storage system at https://<IP address or FQDN>.

Tip: Your browser may display a warning regarding the CA certificate for the storage system. The warning is expected
browser behavior. Select the browser option that enables you to continue.

The login screen opens. Enter a user name and password.

2. Click Log in. The Dashboard screen opens.
For more information about the HPE Primera UI, see the HPE Primera UI User Guide.

Initiating HPE Primera hardware component replacement

When replacing any noncosmetic HPE Primera hardware component, you must initiate the replacement from the HPE
Primera UI. This procedure contains the software actions for initiating the replacement, and within the procedure, there
are links to a hardware replacement video and text instructions.

NOTE: The actual component replacement must wait to be completed at the appropriate time during this service action.
Follow this software process that will guide you at the correct time to perform the actual component replacement.

Prerequisites
You are logged in to the HPE Primera UI.

Procedure

1. From the System screen, click System detail.

2. On the right side Actions menu, click Service.

4 Initiating the replacement action with the HPE Primera UI

3. From the Service System screen, choose Repair from the drop-down menu.
4. Select the Component to be replaced.
5. Follow the onscreen instructions using the displayed drop-down menus.
6. When all the displayed menus have been completed, an image is presented showing the Location of the component
or the hardware in which the component is located. For example, components such as the node coin battery, node
DIMM, and node boot drive are located within the controller node. Review the image and confirm that the correct
component has been selected. You can return and change any of the drop-down menu selections.
7. To prepare for the hardware component replacement, click the appropriate link to access the instructional video, text
instructions, or both.

NOTE: The video is an example and does not necessarily show the exact location of the component. Verify the exact
location using the graphic that is depicted near the bottom of the HPE Primera UI.

8. Read and follow all onscreen instructions.

9. Read the Warning instructions that are displayed when replacing certain components.
10. After you have read all instructions and understand the implications, select the check box to confirm, and click
Continue to initiate the service process.
Throughout the replacement process, you are presented with a series of messages to inform you about the status of
the replacement process and to prompt you for necessary actions.

Primera UI message Action

System is in maintenance mode. Alerts will be logged The system is prepared for the hardware component
but will not generate notifications replacement.
System Task: Repair Describes the replacement component and provides a
progress bar of replacement activity.
Waiting for the node to restart When this message is displayed above the progress bar,
you can safely proceed with the hardware component
replacement.

You may encounter the Connection Lost message. This

message is normal and only signifies that the HPE
Primera UI is changing the controller node from which it
is being run. Wait a few minutes before clicking Retry to
resolve the server connection issue. If you get a browser
error message after pressing Retry, you may have acted
too quickly. Give it more time before attempting to
reload the page.

11. When the Waiting for the node to restart message appears, you can begin the hardware component replacement.

Replacing a node DIMM
Prerequisites
Initiate the replacement process with the HPE Primera UI.

Procedure

1. Remove the controller node.

2. Remove the controller node lid.
3. Remove the DIMM.
4. Install the DIMM.
5. Replace the controller node lid.
6. Installing the controller node.
7. Reconnect the controller node

Removing a controller node

Prerequisites

CAUTION: To prevent outages, data loss or OS issues, verify that the UID LED of the controller node is solid blue
before removing.

• Confirm that the replacement part is present, unboxed, and ready to install.
• Use proper ESD procedures.
• Verify that host multipathing is functional to avoid unnecessary outages.
• Plan the replacement so that the controller node bay is not empty for more than 30 minutes (to avoid overheating).
• Confirm that all cables are clearly labeled for reconnecting to the controller node.

6 Replacing a node DIMM

Procedure

1. Disconnect the cables attached to the controller node ports and adapters.
2. Remove the controller node from the enclosure.

a. Loosen the controller node handle screws (1).

b. Release and extend the handles outward (2).
c. While supporting the weight of the controller node from underneath, pull it out of the enclosure and place on an
ESD safe mat (3).

Removing the controller node lid

Procedure

1. Press the two black notches at the end of the lid inward (1).
2. With the notches pressed inward, slide the lid away from the face of the node (2).

3. Slowly lift away from the enclosure and set on a flat surface.

Removing the DIMM
Prerequisites
The controller node has been removed from the rack, placed on a workable space and the lid has been removed.

Procedure

1. Identify the failed DIMM.

Figure 2: 650/670 DIMM locations

2. Remove the failed DIMM.

a. With your thumb or finger, press outward on the two tabs on the sides of the DIMM (1).
b. Lift the DIMM upwards to remove from the housing (2).
c. Place on the ESD safe mat.

8 Replacing a node DIMM

Installing the DIMM
Procedure

1. Align the key on the DIMM with the slot.

NOTE: The key on the DIMM aligns with the notch on the DIMM housing.

2. Insert the DIMM by pushing downward on the top edge of the DIMM until the tabs on both sides snap into place.

Replacing the controller node lid

Procedure

1. Align the pins on the cover with the slots on the controller node.
2. Slide the cover into place over the controller node and snap into place.

Installing a controller node
Procedure

1. If necessary, loosen the controller node handle screws (1).

2. Release and fully extend the handles outward (2).

Figure 3: Extending the controller node handles

3. Insert and seat the controller node into the enclosure.

a. Because of the weight of the controller node, provide support underneath. Insert the controller node straight into
the enclosure until it stops and the handles begin to engage (1).
b. Swing both controller node handles inward at the same time. Engage the handles with the controller node screw
holes (2).
c. Tighten the handle screws (3).

The controller node powers on when it is seated in the enclosure.

Reconnecting a controller node

Procedure

Reconnect all cables to the onboard ports and adapters in the same location recorded on the labels.

Completing the service process after component
replacement
The software service process resumes when the physical replacement has completed. Completion includes the node
booting and joining the cluster.

Procedure

Track the progress of the service process in the HPE Primera UI.
The service process includes an automatic health check. The HPE Primera UI displays notifications for any issues that
require fixing.

When issues are fixed or there are no issues, the HPE Primera UI displays a green banner message similar to the following.

Verifying DIMM replacement
Procedure

Confirm that the green Status LED on the controller node is flashing in synchronization with the other controller nodes.
This LED behavior indicates that the node has joined the cluster (may take up to 10 minutes).

Returning failed hardware
Procedure

Follow the return instructions provided with the replacement component.
