Today, DHT arts scribe Kirsten Goruk shares her love of Shakespeare. I have a confession. Im one of those people with an English degree who just loves William Shakespeare. Its so clich, I know. That said Im not completely opposed to artistic interpretations of his work. Here are some good and some not so good, contemporary movie interpretations. Our kingdom for a horse, eh KG?

Othello is my favourite Shakespeare play and for you girls who like bad boys, in this private school drama, theres nothing quite like seeing Josh Hartnett as the villainous Iago. The BBC aired four modern recreations in 2005. Im partial to the Macbeth version, which features James McAvoy as Joe Macbeth, a sous chef at an upscale restaurant.

I can remember watching this years ago, loving it and later making the connection between its plot and The Taming of the Shrew. Its easily in the top ten of my teen movies as well.

romeo + Juliet
I feel like every person my age has watched this Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes adaptation, possibly in high school or possibly because they just love a good love story.

A modern day Twelfth Night starring Amanda Bynes and Channing Tatum. Im going to admit I actually really enjoy this one and its only half because its based on Shakespeare.

Kiss me Kate
Shakespeare meets musical in this iconic play within a play. Both the stage and film version owe much of their inspiration to The Taming of the Shrew.

KinG of texas
A made for TV movie based on King Lear that stars Patrick Stewart as John Lear, a wealthy cattle baron living in Texas in the 19th century. He sports a wicked beard in this one.

tempest
A comedy-drama that features a young Molly Ringwald in her film debut as Miranda. There were mixed reviews with this one, but definitely a lot more fun loving than the play.

hamlet 2000

Next to a castle in Denmark, New York City is the perfect setting for a retelling of the Princes tale. Added perks include Bill Murray as Polonius and all of Shakespeares original dialogue.

Get over it

Loosely, and I mean loosely, based on A Midsummer Nights Dream. This one features a sort of play within a play when the high school performs A Midsummer Nights Rockin Eve.
