Monitoring progress matters

It is not always easy to see progress as students take lessons.

Preply level tests are designed to make progress visible. They can show a student in a very clear way
where they started and how much they have progressed.

Your student might feel that a certain task is becoming easier - e.g. talking to colleagues in the foreign
language - or they might see improved test results. A tutor should regularly give feedback and make
achievements and learning progress visible to the student. The tests are a great tool for doing that.

Companies are focused on getting a return on their investment when it comes to investing in language
learning training. As a result, B2B learners may have specific goals that are set by their company such as
reaching a particular level after X lessons. The test results show that their hard work pays off.
Monitoring progress matters

Reflection, diagnosis and planning based on test results give Preply students and their tutors concrete
information that fosters learning. Lessons become more targeted and effective.

Regular students who can clearly see concrete improvements and progress made are motivated to face
the next challenge and reach their new milestones.

Our corporate clients use the level tests to demonstrate return on investment and learning efficacy.
Our sales team leverage these results to renew or upsell programs.
Test characteristics
Characteristics

● Developed, tested and validated by the Preply methodology team

○ Fully aligned with CEFR
● Focus on language structures + speaking
○ 54 multiple choice questions
■ 6 questions per CEFR level
■ from A1 (Beginner) to C1+ (Advanced)
■ Questions become gradually more difficult
■ Questions can be skipped (=0 marks)
○ 2 questions in the speaking section
■ Students record their answers
● When a student makes 4 mistakes in a level, the structure test ends and they get directed to the speaking
section
● A test typically takes a maximum of 20 minutes, but there is no timer or time limit
Structure
All the tests follow the same structure.

10 steps, from CEFR A1 to C1+

● Steps 1-9: grammar and lexis, clearly marked with CEFR level
● 6 questions per level
● Step 10: speaking test
● Encouraging transitions from one part to the next
Why we chose to test grammar, lexis and speaking

By choosing to test objectively assessable language structures - grammar and lexis are a bit like
math - we ensure that the tests are fair and accessible to everyone in our global and diverse Preply
student community.

Regardless of students’ individual learning plans, the level tests are free of cultural, linguistic and
academic bias, not least because of their structural focus.

The speaking recordings have proven to be a valuable tool for tutors to assess their prospective
student’s level of fluency and pronunciation as well as to find out a bit more about learning goals
before they meet in the trial class.

Do I need to share the level test before the trial lesson?

No

Students will be asked to take the test as soon as they have scheduled a trial lesson with you.

However, Preply will send you a reminder message that contains a link to the test. Encourage your new students
to take the test before the trial lesson so you can find suitable resources for the teaching moment in the lesson.
How to use Preply level tests
Why should tutors review the
test results?
When a student makes an effort to complete the test, they are
interested in learning about the results and what their wrong and
right answers mean in connection to their language proficiency and
learning progress.

Our data shows that 97% of students who complete the test also
review their test results.

Preply level tests lend themselves to analyzing the current state of

knowledge on language structures and to identifying learning gaps.
We recommend the following review flow

When the test results are available for review take a moment to go over the correct and incorrect answers to
identify learning achievements and knowledge gaps. You can do this before the trial lesson takes place!

In class, guide your student in a self-reflection and share your own findings. Celebrate the current proficiency
level and also point out knowledge gaps that will then be turned into action points in a learning plan.

For example: A student’s level test result is B1.2.

● This means that the student’s knowledge on language structures is currently at the lower end of the
Intermediate level.
● The errors the student made in the A2 section of the test should be addressed as revision.
● Errors in the B1 section are most likely happening due to a lack of knowledge; the student hasn’t learned
this yet. The identified gaps can now be turned into the focus of the following lessons - a learning plan
that addresses what the level test revealed.
How to use Preply level test with new students during
trial

You will have access to your student's test before the

trial lesson and can use their answers to identify
language gaps and to conduct a personalized needs
analysis.

Each grammar point covered in the tests has a

corresponding grammar topic and/or grammar quizz in
the Preply library. Use those to provide a teaching
moment and plan for you next lesson.
How to use Preply level test as a
progress tool

Level tests for progress checking are currently only used with
students whose companies have requested a progress check. This
typically happens for students who have studied on Preply for around
30 lessons.
Tutors are informed by email and sent support documents by Preply.

Similar to the placement test students and their tutors will receive
the results, which can be used to identify areas that have been
improved and diagnose learning gaps.

Corporate students have their results shared with their company.

How to review test results

General guidelines

● Don’t dedicate the entire trial lesson to reviewing the test. The test results are one of many puzzle
pieces to a great trial lesson.
● Tell students how you will use the information from the test for the learning plan and why it’s important.
● Elicit the student’s opinion and impressions on their results before sharing yours. Let them tell you how
the test taking experience was.
● Don’t spend too much time on sections where students made 0 or just 1 mistake. Relate them to the
overall result and praise them for their strong knowledge in these levels.
● Don’t go beyond the students test result level when reviewing the test. If a student’s result is B2,
reviewing C1 questions isn’t very valuable, since the student hasn’t learned this yet.
How to review the grammar and vocabulary test results

Praise this student for having made an effort as well as getting the first question right.

Elicit self-correction and contrast the different structures provided in the wrong answers.

● If the the structure is unknown → plan to cover it in the upcoming lessons

● If the student knows the structure but does it wrong → plan for remediation

How to review the speaking test results
All students answer the same 2 questions, regardless of the result of the grammar and
vocabulary test.

Praise the student on positive features of their

recorded fluency, pronunciation and general ability to convey
response meaning in their response.

Encourage the student to answer this question in

no class. Thank them for giving you insights into their
response needs and tell them how you will address them in
your lessons.
Increasing student conversion and retention
Your student has a ton of questions.

Use the level test results to raise the student’s trust in you by answering their questions confidently.

● “What am I good at?”

● “What do I need to improve?”
● “Where shall we start this journey?”
● “What’s the next thing for me to learn?”
● “What are we going to do in my next lesson?”
● “What does it take to achieve my learning aims?”
● “How long will it take me to see progress, to get to the next levels?”

Progressing through Preply levels
CEFR descriptors and Preply level structure

Preply level tests are based on the renowned CEFR levels:

A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

We developed a 21 level structure aligned with the CEFR to

make progress within levels more visible, boost students’
confidence and motivate them to continue their hard work
until they reach their big goals.

To build Preply’s 21 level framework, we took all language

competencies and grammar from the CEFR and estimated
that it would take around 30 hrs of instructor-led training to
get to the next level.
Realistic study aims and frequent milestones

The time it takes students to get from a level to another is highly varied and depends on many
individual factors, including a student’s learning abilities and the time they invest in learning.

When studying with a tutor 3 hours a week, a student can acquire ~30 communicative
competencies in roughly 3 months -> 1 level ~ 3 months

* Based on language competencies and grammar from the CEFR

* Preply recommended study frequency: 3 times per week

* Regular study habits are important to see learning progress faster.

* Lots of individual factors impact progress, not least the level

Academic considerations
Who developed the tests and how?

The tests were written by members of the Preply Methodology team as well as language experts,
assessment writers and test editors that are also Preply tutors.

We selected reliable resources and reference books to build a test framework before writing the tests:

● Global Scale of English (GSE)

● Council of Europe
● Eaquals core references

After the initial drafting phase, the questions were tested by Preply staff as well as real Preply students.
Then we revised and edited the questions, and tested them all again, before they were proofread. Now that
the tests are in use, we continue to talk to tutors and collect your feedback in surveys with the aim to
enhance the tests.
What’s in the test?

Which grammar and vocabulary is being tested?

There are hundreds of language structures in a language and it would be impossible to test them all in a test
with such time and content constraints. We chose structures that are acquired globally, rather than regionally,
that test a wide range of grammar constructs (not just tenses but also punctuation, semantics and
morphology) and that cover a wide spectrum of lexical sets from all spheres of live and all registers.

Why multiple-choice?

Multiple choice questions have been the preferred choice of question format in any subject testing for a long
time. They are less susceptible to guessing, more reliable in triggering memory recall, and they are
time-efficient.

You can find the complete test contents here in this doc.
Are the tests always accurate?

We want to say YES. But…

No test is ever 100% accurate for each and every student.

With simple tests focusing on accuracy there’s usually a 5-15% margin of error.

That’s partly because we cannot control the testing environment. Since there is no time limit on the test
taking, and no control against cheating, students can look things up as they move along.

In addition, while a focus on form and structure lends itself to a more standardized and consistent approach
to evaluation, it should be recognized that acquiring knowledge does not always develop in parallel to
communicative skills. There is a risk that a student adept at language structures may be placed above their
communicative ability and vice versa.

Shall a discrepancy be identified, tutors are recommended to adjust the start level based on the student’s
speaking performance in the recordings or live lessons.
