Supply Chain Analysis of Colgate

Introduction

Among the various items in my possession is the Colgate toothpaste. The product is used for oral

hygiene. However, the Chinese Colgate Company branch in Guangdong province manufactured

this particular brand of goods. Colgate-Palmolive, a New York City-based global firm, is the

manufacturer of this item. The fluoride in Colgate toothpaste is combined with fluoride-free

flavors, humectants, tooth whiteners, water, and other vital preservatives (Gupta et al.,2021). An

essential part of making Colgate toothpaste a successful final product is understanding the supply

chain and operations of the various components that make up the toothpaste. Both the supply

chain and operations themselves benefit from this approach's solutions. The manufacturing

process is complicated, and these substances prevent the separation of liquid and solid

components from improving storage quality. Components that make up the Colgate toothpaste

supply chain and operations are discussed in this study. Both supply chain and operations

concerns are addressed here.

The Analytical procedure

Here is a breakdown of the process's five stages with their respective durations.

1. Planned manufacturing strategies

Considering both domestic and international factors, Colgate Palmolive employs a

manufacturing strategy for toothpaste (Arbitrator,2021). Here, the product is made to meet the

needs of a specific market. A final point worth mentioning is that the cleaning power of various

abrasives in production varies. As a result, Colgate toothpaste is created by blending different

abrasives to achieve a product with varying cleaning properties.

2. Source: Procurement

A few compounds are sourced from China, such as sodium fluoride, in Colgate toothpaste;

however, the bulk of the ingredients are manufactured in the US. Components used in the

production of Colgate toothpaste are obtained from both China and the United States. The

majority of the raw materials are purchased and transported via air freight, which speeds up the

process and reduces transportation costs. Sourcing usually takes two weeks, but raw materials

are delivered to the manufacturing site on a weekly basis in some cases. The additives and other

critical components of toothpaste are sourced from the United States as part of these raw

materials, as discussed by Suppipat et al. (2022). However, despite the fact that the company is

based in China, a significant portion of its raw ingredients, such as mint, are widely available in

the United States. Furthermore, it aids the company in defining its legacy as an American

multinational corporation or as a company with a unique heritage.

3. Scheduling of Production activities

Colgate Palmolive Company guarantees that the toothpaste product is tested before packing and

releasing it during this phase. Even while the product's performance is monitored, the product's

production data is saved in a secure manner. In addition to hydrated silica, sodium bicarbonate

and calcium carbonate are generally known as baking soda and calcium bicarbonate (Seo et

al.,2021). A variety of other abrasives are also employed in substantial amounts in toothpaste

production.

4. Deliver; Inventory and warehousing management.

This product comes with a slew of challenges when it comes to inventory, storage, and

distribution. Components are consequently shipped based on urgency and necessity to grab the

market in order to meet the demand.

According to Colgate's management team, the time it takes to transport the final Colgate brand

toothpaste products manufactured in China by an American multinational organization is never

long (Siripipatthanakul et al.,2021). The paste and the ingredients in Colgate toothpaste are both

delicious.

5. Return: Post- delivery operations

If there are any problems with the final product, the company will accept returns. Customers can

also return things if their orders do not fulfill the specifications mentioned in their order.

Critical issues in the Colgate toothpaste supply chain planning and operation

Colgate's toothpaste supply chain has a variety of issues, all of which must be addressed in the

planning and execution of the operations (Mondol, 2018). A few of the difficulties faced by the

various stakeholders are listed below:

i. Risk management

According to Boateng (2021), it is challenging for Colgate Palmolive to mitigate and manage

risks connected with diversity in the market because of the ever-changing influences of the

market from sources, including politics, customer expectations, and global sourcing. However, a

workable risk management strategy has been established by the organization. Supply chain

operations are more technologically advanced by the company and thus less risky.

ii. Expense

The cost of raw materials, labor, and energy used in the production of Colgate toothpaste are one

of the biggest obstacles (Satyro et al.,2018). According to this report, due to economic restraints,

the cost of the indicated elements has steadily increased in the recent past. However, despite the

fact that labor and raw material costs in China are generally more reasonable than in other

countries where Colgate toothpaste is manufactured, the overall process is still prohibitively

expensive.

iii. Reliability of the vendor

As far as supply chain management activities are concerned, this is another problem faced when

creating Colgate toothpaste. It might be challenging to build a relationship with suppliers that is

both mutually beneficial and calm. This procedure aids in the coordination of efforts and the

administration of resources. As a result, clients benefit from more rapid access to the goods.

iv. Exceptional client service

Additionally, meeting customers' diverse wants and needs is a difficult task. Providing the

correct amount and quality of Colgate toothpaste is a challenge. In reality, this is the best

technique to evaluate performance. As a result, timing and location are critical. It's a challenge to

cater to a wide range of consumer tastes while maintaining a good service standard.

Colgate Toothpaste supply chain dealing with Covid-19

Recently completed research suggests that some oral care products may be able to temporarily

reduce the quantity of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19) in your mouth. There was

a 99 percent reduction in the virus's ability to reproduce in particular kinds of toothpaste,

including zinc-containing formulas, stannous fluoride formulations, and stannous/amine fluoride

mouthwash formulations. For up to 60 minutes after rinsing, a clinical trial using COVID-19

positive individuals found that mouthwashes containing CPC with zinc as well as hydrogen

peroxide or chlorhexidine dramatically lowered viral levels in the mouth.

In order to support the World Health Organization (WHO) #SafeHands campaign, Colgate

toothpaste activated five of its manufacturing units on three continents to make the new soap,

which is bundled with instructions on good handwashing. The products will be sent all around

the world through collaborations with organizations like CARE, Save the Children, and DHL.

Colgate toothpaste is promoting the #SafeHands Challenge on multiple media channels and

engaging global ambassadors and influencers in order to raise awareness of proper handwashing

(Hanks,2020). Local nonprofit organizations distribute donated hygiene and health goods from

Colgate to persons in need in their regions. Also supporting the most vulnerable populations,

local Colgate teams donate health and hygiene products, including 1 million bars of Protex soap

in Thailand, skincare products from EltaMD and PCA Skin in the United States, and products to

the Red Cross in southern Europe, as well as to other organizations including the Good+

Foundation, NHS, Good360, Habitat para la Humanidad, and the Salud Publica RD ann. Profits

from the sale of PCA Skin's Daily Care Masks also contributed to helping develop Personal

Protective Equipment. PCA Skin (PPE). Colgate has contributed health and hygiene items to

New York City institutions, including Memorial Sloan Kettering and Mount Sinai, as well as to

medical professionals and nonprofits that help the city's homeless population. In Peru and the

Dominican Republic, we're helping small companies by providing security kits and screens

(Dayan et al.,202).

It is recommended that the company consider expanding into international markets without

closing domestic locations, as these locations generate a significant portion of the company's

revenue.

Amazon, Alibaba, and other internet retailers may pose a severe threat to a company's market

share because of the increasing tendency toward online shopping. In this case, Colgate-Palmolive

Company: Marketing Anti-Cavity Toothpaste Case Solution recommends offering Click and

Recommendations. The company would be able to expand into overseas markets without losing

any of its domestic locations if it used these low-cost retailers.

Colgate-Palmolive should continue in its attempts to ultimately its supply chain management.

Checks and balances are in place to prevent errors, so trust those safeguards. Also, continue the

automation in production. These efforts thus have been quite profitable, which leads to savings

for the customers as well as the organization. Be Agile with these new adjustments! “We have to

be highly adaptable to be\sable to embrace new technology as they come along. People and

organization readiness is crucial to adopt and use these technologies.”

Conclusion

The organization successfully manages and controls the chain supply operations and processes

linked with Colgate toothpaste. It's a product that's universally embraced and relied upon by

clients all over the world. In terms of improving oral hygiene, this product is an excellent choice.

In addition, the company's overall revenue has been boosted by the brand's success in capturing

the majority of overseas markets.
