Chemical structures (especially organic)
Essential Idea
Note that all of the hydrogens are in identical chemical environments, so TMS
produces only ONE signal on an NMR spectrum.
It is the “standard” to which all other signals are compared. (Analogous to the
SHE.)
Data Book Check: 1H NMR Data
NMR Spectrum: Ethanal
Draw the structure and consider the number of chemical
environments for the hydrogens.

NMR Spectrum: Ethanal
Unknown Spectrum
Step 1: Draw all possible isomers of C3H8O. That will help with comparisons to the
spectrum.
Unknown Spectrum
Step 1: Draw all possible isomers of C3H8O. That will help with comparisons to the
spectrum.
Notice the hydrogens in the structures above are color-coded based on the
environment. For example, in propan-2-ol, the red hydrogens all have the same
chemical environment, even though they are on different carbons.
Unknown Spectrum
Step 2: Compare your structures to the diagram. Which structure is the “best fit” for the
spectrum?
