The history of
the internet in India began with the launch of the Educational
Research Network (ERNET) in 1986. The first publicly available
internet service in India was launched by state-owned Videsh
Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) on 14 August 1995
As of May 2014, the Internet was delivered to India mainly
by 9 different undersea fibres, including SEA-ME-WE 3, Bay of
Bengal Gateway and Europe Indian Gateway, arriving at 5
different landing points. India also has one overland
internet connection, at the city of Agartala near the border
with Bangladesh.
As of December 2017, 481 million people (35% of the country's
total population) were Internet users.
The history of the internet in India began with the launch of
the Educational Research Network (ERNET) in 1986. The network
was only made available to educational and research
communities. ERNET was initiated by the Department of
Electronics (DoE), with funding support from the Government of
India and United Nations Development Program (UNDP),
involving eight premier institutions as participating agencies—
NCST Bombay, Indian Institute of Science, five Indian Institutes of
Technology at Delhi, Mumbai, Kanpur, Kharagpur and Chennai,
and the DoE in New Delhi. ERNET began as a multi protocol
network with both the TCP/IP and the OSI-IP protocol stacks
running over the leased-line portion of the backbone.
Since 1995, however, almost all traffic is carried over TCP/IP. The
first leased line of 9.6 kbit/s was installed in January 1991
between Delhi and Mumbai. ERNET was allotted Class B IP
address 144.16.0.0 by Inter NIC in 1990. Subsequently, Class C
addresses were allotted to ERNET by APNIC. All IITs, IISc
Bangalore, DOE Delhi and NCST Mumbai were connected by 9.6
kbit/s leased line by 1992. In the same year, 64 kbit/s Internet
gateway link was commissioned from NCST Mumbai
to UUNet in Virginia, United States.
NICNet was established in 1988 for communications
between government institutions. The network was operated by
the National Informatics Centre.
The first publicly available internet service in India was
launched by state-owned Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL)
on 14 August 1995. At the time, VSNL had a monopoly over
international communications in the country and private
enterprise was not permitted in the sector. The internet service,
known as the Gateway Internet Access Service (GIAS), provided
a speed of 9.6 kbit/s speed and was priced at $160 for 250 hours
for individuals, $500 for institutional dial-up SLIP/PPP accounts,
and higher for leased line services. GIAS was available
immediately from Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai. It was
made available in Pune and Bangalore by the end of 1995, while
users from other locations could connect through the Department
of Telecommunications' I-NET, an X.25 network accessed
through leased lines or at a concessional dial-up rate from almost
anywhere. The connection between VSNL and MCI Inc. in the
United States was made with multiple 64kbit/s links.
The service was plagued by several hardware and network
issues. B.K. Syngal, then chairman and managing director of
VSNL, publicly apologized and took responsibility for the issues.
Syngal stated that the company had not conducted any survey
of the potential demand for the service. The modems used by
VSNL were of poor quality, and often would make a beeping sound
every three minutes and subsequently disconnect. The
connections also faced junction issues when users attempted to
connect between internet exchanges. VSNL had designed each
line to handle 30 customers at a time, which would quickly swell
to full capacity. VSNL invested ₹2-2.5 crore on the launch.
Recalling the launch in 2015, Syngal described the amount as
"pathetic".
In 2004, the government formulated its broadband policy which
defined broadband as "an always-on Internet connection with
download speed of 256 kbit/s or above." From 2005 onward, the
growth of the broadband sector in the country accelerated, but
remained below the growth estimates of the government and
related agencies due to resource issues in last-mile access which
were predominantly wired-line technologies. This bottleneck was
removed in 2010 when the government auctioned 3G spectrum
followed by an equally high-profile auction of 4G spectrum that
set the scene for a competitive and invigorated wireless
broadband market. Today, internet access in India is provided by
both public and private companies using a variety of technologies
and media including dial-up (PSTN), xDSL, coaxial cable, Ethernet,
FTTH, ISDN, HSDPA (3G), WiFi, WiMAX, etc. at a wide range of
speeds and costs.

Bharti Airtel Limited (commonly shortened to Airtel and
stylised airtel) is an Indian global telecommunications services
company based in New Delhi, India. It operates in 20 countries
across South Asia and Africa. Airtel provides GSM, 3G, 4G
LTE and VoLTE mobile services, fixed line broadband and
voice services depending upon the country of operation. Airtel
had also rolled out its VoLTEtechnology across all telecom
50
circles except Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir in
India and likely to launch soon in these states. It is the second
largest mobile network operator in India and the third largest
mobile network operator in the world with over 438.04 million
subscribers. Airtel was named India's second most valuable
brand in the first ever Brandz ranking by Millward
Brownand WPP plc.
Airtel is credited with pioneering the business strategy of
outsourcing all of its business operations except marketing,
sales and finance and building the 'minutes factory' model of
low cost and high volumes. The strategy has since been
[10]
adopted by several operators. Airtel's equipment is provided
and maintained by Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia Solutions and
Networks. whereas IT support is provided by IBM. The
transmission towers are maintained by subsidiaries and joint
venture companies of Bharti including Bharti Infratel and Indus
Towers in India. Ericsson agreed for the first time to be paid by
the minute for installation and maintenance of their
equipment rather than being paid up front, which allowed
Airtel to provide
low call rates of ₹1 (1.4¢ US)/minute.

LIMITATIONS
62
While preparing the report I have faced some
limitations which are mentioned here;
1. There Was time constraint to me. If I get more
time then I could enrich my report more.
2. I have cover only Navi Mumbai, Mumbai West , Thane
it would be better if could cover the some more areas
in my report.
3. In the website there was lack of information. So I
have to go to everyone to fulfill my queries to
prepare my report.
4. Here decisions are changed so rapidly. That’s
why I had to change my desk several times which was
so disturbing for my works and also I cannot
concentrate on my work and also preparing my
reports .
If I had not to face these limitations then my
report could be more perfect.
63
SUGGESTIONS
Certain suggestions can be followed they are given
below:
1. Employees need more training and development
program to gain more skills and help the company with
their different skills to expand.
2. Associates should be more sincere about their duties.
Customer satisfaction is a big but they should also keep
other activities in mind as well so that operational
lapses cannot be occurred.
3. To reduce the number of pending E-mail they can
use proper software for better contact with clients.
4. To reduce the work pressure they can increase the
associate of the sales department.
5. Should have stability in their decision making.
6. They have to more aware to deliver the products to
their clients on time.
If Tikona Broadband follows these recommendations, I
believe they can do better in future.
64
CONCLUSION
In the last two months from above presentation
we can conclude that awareness level of Tikona
broadband is low as compare to the market. Market
want high speed with low price which is nor provided by
the company but if they provide reasonable price, surely
demand will increase. Company is new in the market, so
the price must be low for grasping the market.
Competitors are providing reasonable price 1900Rs.
With full installation. So, Tikona must provide its
package around 1900 to 2000rs to expand its market.
Plus point is that Tikona is providing high speed
internet service which is 25 mbps and if they charge
reasonable price , they sure capture the market and
increase the share.
To conclude I would like to say that this was a
great learning experience and has give us a peek into
how hardware and technology industry works. Right
from field work to and planning to strategizing and
client meetings the whole journey was enriching and
knowledgeable experience.
65
summary
Tikona broadband is growing name in the internet
service provide sector. competition in the market is
huge so company must keep watch on the asic
strategies and plans which make it different from
other companies. If we talk about competitors , they
are Hathway , I-On , BSNL and the most important id
Reliance Jio which is enough capable of destroying
whole internet service industry.
