A tribute to my Saraswati…………
This a humble tribute to my Aaji late Smt Saraswati Raje a
teacher and my first Guru, an epitome of self-sacrifice,
humility, unconditional giving, faith, prayer, and my rock of
Gibraltar……
I owe you all that is good in me……
This verse from Manache Shlok describes you so aptly
To my grandson Cyrus………
in July 2036 in your Ketu Dasha, Jupiter Antardasha, and Saturn
Pratiantar Dasha you may find this book interesting………………!!!
Thank you for showing interest in Vedic astrology (Vedanga Jyotish) I
can assure you this will be a fascinating journey towards deep
knowledge and understanding of yourself along with deep respect and
understanding of the path of every living being and the role they play
in this planet.
My journey into studying Jyotish began thru the sheer disbelief and
frustration as to why my life was unfolding so differently from the rest
of the people around me, with a loaded 8th house I seemed to have
had to carry an extra load of responsibilities at a young age, a
wonderfully placed Venus and Mercury landed me a career of Fashion
Retail and corporates, having achieved highest levels in the corporate
ladder did not diminish my thirst to understand, the turns my life took,
and so in my guru Mahadasha and Ketu Antardashas (both conjoined
in the 8th house) I embarked upon this magical journey of Jyotish.
15 years of studying Jyotish, has led to me a calm acceptance of my
life path, clarity of purpose, belief in God, and prayer, it has filled me
with empathy, care, kindness for other human beings during their
difficult phases, I have developed the ability to see the beauty in
everything created by God and respect for the timing when events
unfold in one’s life, no corporate HR development program could have
managed this!
Thru this journey I also realized that this ancient science is not easy
to understand and apply, I have attended several seminars &
webinars and read many books, and it has taken many years to
connect the dots
This book is an attempt to simplify your journey into Jyotish, it is to
help you read one book that would contain all the knowledge required
to be able to understand and predict at an elementary level, hopefully,
it would get you to effectively read charts much earlier than I did, and
it fills you with enthusiasm and passion to pursue this science of
energies.
Jyotish is truly lord Shiva’s gift to mankind.
Extremely grateful to all the Gurus who guided me, thru books,
webinars, and seminars

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

THE Universe has an identity – AHAM (self-awareness) and

intelligence MAHAT (buddhi)
The universe emerged from a source of primary concentrated
energy called ADHI SHAKTI
Based on the principle of duality one part of the energy was
constant NIRGUNA – unpolluted, unchangeable, stable this is called
PURUSHA
the other part evolved continuously, forming and reforming and
recreating this is called PRAKRITI
Purush & Prakriti co-exist
Prakriti – has 3 Gunas

1. SATTWA
2. RAJAS
3. TAMAS

Thru the evolution process of PRAKRITI (Big Bang) five fundamental

forms of energy called TATTVAS evolved these are

1. AKAASH (ETHER) TATTVA

2. VAAYU (WIND) TATTVA
3. TEJAS (AGNI OR FIRE) TATTVA
4. AAPAS (JALA OR WATER) TATTVA
5. PRITHVI (EARTH) TATTVA

The human race developed 4 levels of consciousness –

1. Jaagrat
2. Swapna
3. Nidra
4. Thuriya

Thru the process of THURIYA (intense concentration/meditation) the

Maha Rishis (scientists) were able to connect with the universal
knowledge, what the Maha Rishis acquired in the state of Thuriya is
called VEDA (culture of the universe) universal wisdom was
transferred to humanity thru these revelations
Once as Shiva and Shakti sat on Kailash parvat, shakti watched
the human race struggle without a clear sense of their karmic
purpose, as a divine mother she was overcome with compassion
for her creation and she humbly requested Shiva to offer some
aid to this race so they would better understand their life path
and purpose, Shiva moved by her compassion agreed to give the
Gyana of JYOTISH (light) to the human race, the same was given
to Ganesha, who in turn handed over this Gyana to Narada the
communicator between cosmic levels, with instruction to hand it
over to Rishi Parashara – who wrote BRIHAT PARASHAR HORA
SHASTRA for the benefit of mankind.
The son born of Sage Paraashara and Satyavati was named
Krishna Dwaipayana – he became the child prodigy who was born
with the knowledge of 1180 Sakhas, at the age of 5 he took up the
responsibility of editing and documenting the Vedas in 4 volumes (the
methodical process of presenting literary compilations is called Vyasa)
He was named VEDA VYAASA because he edited and presented the
Vedas in a methodical manner – the editor of VEDAS
These volumes are called CHATUR VEDAS –
1. RIG VEDA
2. YAJUR VEDA
3. SAAMA VEDA
4. ATHARVA VEDA

Vedas are compared to a dynamic divine person and Vedic literature

is considered as 6 essential organs of this personality they are
collectively called VEDA ANGA (6 limbs)

1. SIKSHA (Phonetics)
2. VYAKRAN (Grammar)
3. CHANDAS (Rhythm)
4. NIRUKTA (Etymology)
5. JYOTISHA (Astrology & Astronomy)
6. KALPA (Practical applicability)

Ancient sages established a correlation between planetary

configurations and the directions of one will, this science was called
JYOTISH (that which gives light)
BHAVA

The 12 Bhavas hold the key to the chart, they begin with the
ascendent, each of the houses or Bhavas is an area of 30 degrees
each, twelve bhavas are the 360 degrees circle of life.

RASHIS

karma is related to SATURN and Vayu, and therefore is connected to

the KURMA avatar of Lord Vishnu, the churning of the ocean on the
back of a tortoise releases karma that is to be manifested in the
current incarnation, these karmas are collected by the Aditya`s in
heaps or piles in Rashi`s, hence Rashi`s determine the kind of
pending karma that will be manifested in the current incarnation
There are 3 types of karma

1. SANCHITA KARMA – this is a total of all your good and bad

karmas in all lifetimes
2. PRARABHDHA KARMA – the portion of sanchita karma that
will be manifesting in the current lifetime thru certain Rashis at
a pre-ordained time, the contract with Kala or time happens at
the time of conception and unfolds at a pre-determined time.
prarabhadha karma is manifested thru Rashis
3 types of Prarabhdha karma
DHRIDHA KARMA – thru Sthir Rashis (fixed signs) –
Vrishabha (Taurus), Simha (Leo), Vrischika (Scorpio),
Kumbha (Aquarius) – fixed Rashis carry fixed karma
ADHRIDHA KARMA – thru Chara Rashis (cardinal signs) –
Mesha (Aries), Tula (Libra), karka (cancer), Makar (Capricorn)
– karma can be changed thru kriyaman karma (karma created
in the present), and your actions in the current incarnation
DHRIDHA-ADHRIDHA – thru Dwiswabhav Rashis (dual signs)
– Mithun (Gemini), Kanya (Virgo), Dhanu (Sagittarius), Meena
(Pisces) – mercury and Jupiter rule dhridha-adhridha karma,
this can be changed thru prayers and good actions
3. KRIYAMAN KARMA – all karma accumulated thru good and
bad actions in the current incarnation, this gets added to
sanchit karma either positive or negative, every human being
has 33% free will to accumulate kriyaman karma, one needs
to closely study the upachaya houses (3,6,10,11) as these are
the ones where you can make the most mistakes.
There are 3 ways you can make new karma

1. Swa karma – 1 factor – only you are involved in swa karma

2. Sama yoga – 2 factors – this is done with collaboration or
coordination with others
3. Paraspara yoga – more than 2 factors are involved such as
family, community, colleagues, etc

The above is then manifested thru

Manasa karma (mind) – karma manifestation thru sense organs or
janendriyas
Sarira karma (body) – karma manifested thru body and karmendriyas
Vacchikka karma (speech)– soul level karma – related to speech or
vaccha
The above multiplication of 3 types of karma and 3 types of
manifestations lead to 9 Graha or 9 planets.

1. Odd and Even Rashis – even Rashi`s are feminine, passive

gentle, and submissive
Odd Rashi`s are masculine, active, aggressive, and
dominating
2. day and night Rashis – moon governs Nisha Rashis
(nocturnal) and sun governs Divaa Rashi (diurnal)
Out of every 2, Rashi`s ruled by a planet one is a day Rashi
and the other is a night Rashi

GRAHA – (PLANETS)

SURYA – THE KING OF PLANETS

The Devas in Devaloka were performing a Yagna, to please their
creator Lord Bramha.
Bramha was extremely pleased with this Yagna and blessed the
Devas, and asked them to keep a part of the holy offerings as prasad,
Asuras (demons) had been watching this and wanted the Prasad so
they could get the boons acquired by the Devas for themselves, they
attacked the Devas and a violent battle took place, the Devas lost their
Devaloka which is their heavenly abode, to the Asuras and several of
the Devas and sons of Rishis were killed, among those were sons of
Rishi Kashyapa and Aditi (Mother Earth).
Aditi was so deeply hurt by the plight of her sons in the war with
Asuras, she decided to perform penance to please Lord Bramha, after
several years of austerity Lord Bramha was pleased with the
dedication of Aditi, he asked her what she would like as a boon, Aditi
asked Lord Bramha to bless her with a valiant son who would defeat
the Asuras and restore the Devaloka to the Devas, Lord Bramha
granted the wish and soon a radiant boy with golden hands and
golden hair was born, he was named SURYA, he was also called
RAVI and ADITYA after his mother Aditi. Surya was extremely
intelligent, punctual, fond of music and dance, and a very brave
commander, he rode a chariot with 7 horses, these 7 horses
represented the 7 chakras, 7 colors of the rainbow, and 7 days of the
week
Surya knew what his task was, he also had special powers, so with

RAHU & KETU – The Karmic Nodes

Once upon a time Lord Indra the king of Devaloka was riding on his
elephant Aairavat in his kingdom, while doing so he passed Rishi
Durvasa, the Rishi who was well known for his short temper and
curses, tossed a garland of flowers towards Lord Indra which was
made by a celestial Nymph,
Indra caught the garland and put it around the neck of his Aairavat
his favorite elephant, Aairavat pulled the garland out from his neck
and tossed it on the road, this angered Sage Duruvasa immensely, he
cursed Indra and all the Devas and made them powerless and helped
Bali and the Asuras to take over Devaloka.
Indra and Devas went to Lord Vishnu for advice and action plan,
Lord Vishnu came up with a plan to churn the oceans to extract nectar
(Amrit) that made one immortal, he asked the Devas and Indra to be
diplomatic towards the Asuras, a day was set for the churning of
Oceans, Vasuki the king of Snakes agreed to be used as the rope for
the churning process and was wrapped around Mount Mandar to
begin the churning.
The Devas were on one side of the mountain and the Asuras on the
other of Mount Mandar, the churning process began, and several
miraculous objects were thrown out of the Ocean, among them were
Gemstones, Divine Apsaras, Goddess Laxmi, kaustubha the divine
Gem, Kamdhenu the wish-fulfilling cow, Kalpavruksha the wish-
fulfilling tree and Parijat tree.
After this suddenly the most dangerous poison HALAHAL seeped
out, all the gods and the Asuras started to run helter-skelter as the
poison dangerously threatened to destroy them, the Gods prayed to
Lord Shiva for help, Shiva immediately drank the poison and held it in
his throat and saved everyone.
Finally, Dhanvantari the God of Medicines came out carrying a pot
of Amrita (nectar of immortality), as the Devas and Asuras clamored to
get a drop of the nectar Vishnu changed his form to a beautiful
celestial maiden called Mohini and asked all the Devas and Asuras to
stand in a line to get a drop of the nectar, Mohini started giving the
Amrita to the Devas one by one, among the Asuras, was Svarbhanu,
he realized Vishnu`s plan of giving Amrita only to the Devas, he
changed himself to look like a Deva and quietly stood in the line of
Devas for his drop of Amrita, as Mohini approached Savarbhanu and
put a drop of Amrit in his mouth, Surya and Chandra realized that
Vishnu was being tricked and told Vishnu about it, Before the Amrit
could enter the body of Svarbhanu Vishnu used his Sudarshan chakra
and beheaded him, Savrbhanu was cut into 2 pieces the head and the
torso.
The head became RAHU as he had received a drop of Amrita, he
became immortal, the Torso became KETU a body without the ability
to think, as Revenge on Surya and Chandra Rahu and Ketu cause the
Sun and Moon to eclipse.
The Devas became immortal after consuming the Amrita and never
had to fear the Asuras again.

VIMSHOTTARI MAHADASHA
The Sanskrit term “Dasha” is used to indicate planetary periods.
Dashas provide a system to judge the effects of the planets throughout
a person’s lifetime. Each Dasha is controlled by one of the nine
planets, and the quality and relative effects of each period are
determined by the condition and position of that planet in the natal
chart
All planets give their good or bad results during their Mahadasas and
antra-Dasas; the results vary from person to person because of the
varying conditions and circumstances of their births and family back-
ground, place, and country of birth, etc. Jataka Parijataka states that
in the beginning, the maha Dasha lord gives results in accordance
with the house it occupies, in the middle, as per the sign it occupies,
and at the close, as per the influence of the planetary aspects that
improve or afflict the Maha Dasha lord.
The Dasha system based on natives Janma Nakshatra (placement
of the moon and its nakshatra in the chart) is called Vimshottari
Mahadasha, vim means 20 shottari means 100 thus it is calculated for
120 years, the nakshatra lord of Janma Nakshatra is the first Dasha
followed sequentially by the other planets, Vimshottari Mahadasha is
key in knowing the changes in the mental condition of the native
based on the Dasha lord
Vimshottari dasha is a 5-stage system -

1. Mahadasha – indicates the overall influence of the planet on

the individual in the duration of the Dasha – based on the
house placement, significations rulership of the planet, and it’s
conjunctions one will experience a certain kind of energy,
rhythm, and patterns in one’s life in this Dasha, it means that
this particular area of one’s life is now activated
2. Antar Dasha – or Bhukti – this is a sub-period which is further
divided into 9 planets, this determines the kind of events that
are likely to occur in this duration, it is the combination of the
Mahadasha lord and Antardasha lord and the effects are
based on their relationship with each other as well as the
houses they occupy in the native’s chart
3. Pratyantar Dahsa – a narrowed down phase when the event
can happen with the association of Mahadasha and
Antardasha lords
4. Sukshama Dasha – narrows down the period to a few days
5. Prana Dasha – narrows down the period to a few hours

The following criteria need to be taken into account while analyzing

the Mahadasha

1. the lord of the Dasha and the house the planet is placed in
2. the Rashi the Dasha lord is placed in, and the dispositor of the
Dasha lord and his placement
3. the rulership houses of the Dasha lord in the chart
4. the condition of the Dasha lord – exalted debilitated, in own
house, retrograde combust, etc
5. the conjunctions with the Dasha lord if any and the houses
they rule and their dispositors
6. the aspects of the planet on the Dasha lord

DASHA CHIDRA – the transition phase of a Mahadasha from one

planet to another is called Dasha chidra, it is the last Antardasha of a
Mahadasha where the rulership of one planet is coming to an end, it’s
a time of consolidation of the Dasha lord, it is not advisable to take
important life decisions during this time as it is a complicated time, it
involves a change of mindset from one planet to another and it could
be a period of great complexity.
Dasha of retrograde planets – retrograde planets deviate from the
normal as the planet gives unpredictable results in life there is a direct
impact on the Karak tattva (natural significations) of the planet. One is
made to re-learn, re-experience, re-examine, re-do the lessons
indicated by the planet till you understand it fully. there are
disappointments in physical life, internal emotional turmoil. There is
often a feeling of being held back and repression in the aspects of life
connected to these planets. The expression of the planet’s energy in
physical life is often erratic. However, it gives a boost for spiritual
practice and growth. Essentially the qualities of the planet are
negatively impacted

GOCHARA

The day-to-day effects caused by the transitory motion of planets in

relation to janma nakshatra and janma Rashi is called Gochara Phala
the transits are also co-related to the 12 bhavas.
The permanent position of the planets at birth signifies the inherent
strengths and weakness of the planets, the effects of the same in
relation to janma Rashi and the nakshatra is felt due to transit of
planets on a day-to-day basis, any action of a native is prompted by
the mind and hence the placement of moon is critical in Gochara, to
assess the current situation a combination of Dasha/Antar Dasha and
Gochar from both Lagna and Moon needs to be assessed

EFFECTS OF PLANETS IN TRANSITS

The following is an approximate estimate of the stay of each of the 9
planets in a given sign-

Sun 1 month

Moon 2.25 days

Mars 45 days

Mercury 21 days

Venus 26 days

Jupiter 12.5 months

Saturn 2.5 yrs (30 months)

Rahu, Ketu 19 months

Listed below are the general effects of planets from the position of the
Natal Moon of the Native

POINTS TO CONSIDER WHILE ANALYSING GOCHARA CHART

1. Analyze transits from Moon and also Lagna

2. Parasara emphasized the importance of transit (“Gochara”)
from the Moon as the Moon is a karaka of our mind, feelings,
and emotions, and hence our day-to-day life, events will be
best reflected in how we feel or think during a particular transit
hence primary importance is to be given to the Moon
3. Transit should also be seen from the Ascendant sign and both
have to be kept in mind for the overall result
4. The transit of Jupiter, Saturn & Rahu Ketu are extremely
important for long-term effects especially if they hit a planet in
the natal chart during transits. Saturn is the slowest and stays
in a sign for an average of 30 months in a sign. these
determine some big changes in native’s life.
5. Moon is in a sign a for less than 2 ½ days each and hence its
transit along with other fast-moving planets like Mercury,
Venus, Mars the effects of these are based on the
Ashtakavarga Bala points in Bhavas of these planets, one can
determine some positive or negative days during these cycles
6. planetary return – is of importance as a planet returns to its
natal chart position after its 360-degree circle in the zodiac,
this brings new cycles in a native’s life
7. Sade- Sati – (Meaning 7 ½ yrs) when Saturn transits the 12th,
1st, and 2nd from Moon, a 7 ½ period of Saturn return begins,
this phase returns every 29 years, Likewise, Saturn transiting
4th and 8th from Moon are called Dhaiyas of 2 ½ yrs of Saturn
these phases of Saturn return can be difficult, slow progress
can be expected during these periods
8. finally a transit can impact a person only if one is going thru
the Dasha, Antar Dasha, or Pratiantar Dasha of the transiting
planets it is therefore important to co-relate natives transit
chart with the Vimshottari Dasha of the Native

every way
Native is currently in Rahu Mahadasha from – 28th March 2012 to 28th
March 2030
Rahu is Sadhana Tara which is supportive to the overall growth of the
Natives path and career however since the Lagna is in Adra and Rahu
is in Lagna in the nakshatra of Mars, one can estimate a lot of chaotic
situations and obstacles that native is likely to face during this period,
and will be in a position to overcome the same thru courage and out of
box thinking and following the Rule of Law of the Country.
The current Antardasha is Rahu -Mercury from 10th March 2020 to 28th
September 2022 Mercury (Sadhan-Adi—Mitra) and therefore this can
be a fruitful period overall except for small disruptive periods when the
pratiantar Dashas of Vipat/pratyak/Naidhan Taras.
Rahu-Mercury-Venus – from 13th September 2020 to 17th February
2021 (Sadhan -Adi Mitra -Sampat) it will be a fruitful period for new
regulations and plans will be set in action, on 11th August in Rahu-
Mercury-Rahu-Venus she was announced as the running mate of
presidential candidate Joe Biden, on 20th January 2021 Inauguration
day the Dasha was Rahu-Mercury-Venus-Mercury-Ketu (sadhan-Adi
Mitra-Sampat-Adi Mitra-janma)
Rahu-Mercury-Sun – from 17th February 2021 to 2nd April 2021 –
(sadhan-adi Mitra-vipat) there will be obstacles and opposition, but
there will be progress and growth
Rahu-Mercury-Moon – from 2nd April 2021 to 19th June 2021- (sadhan-
Adi Mitra-Kshem) the Moon here would signify the Masses and one
could see some new regulations or benefits for the masses worked
out during this time
Rahu-Mercury-Mars – from 19th June 2021 to 12th august 2021 –
(sadhan-Adi Mitra-Pratyak) Mars is Pratyak tara, and Native may face
a lot of Opposition during this period one need to assesses the
Gochara position of these planets during this time to understand
where the obstacles are possibly emerging from Rahu is in Rohini
Nakshatra currently in the 12th house of Losses
Transit planets from 19th June to 12th august
Transit Rahu in Rohini from16 degrees to 2 degrees of Rohini in 12th
house over the Natal Jupiter (in Krittika)
Transit – Mercury in Mrigashira nakshatra from 16th may (Retrograde)
to Magha Nakshatra on 12 August the in-between periods of
nakshatras ruled by mars, Jupiter will bring serious obstacles, even
the transit of Adra and Ashelsha will be chaotic transits
Transit – Mars will transit Pushya (cancer its sign of debility and
Saturn’s nakshatra pushya)
In June followed by Ashlesha nakshatra both these transits will be
trying and full of obstacles and aggressive opposition
It is very important to check the transits of Saturn and Jupiter at all
times along with the Nodes, and both Jupiter and Saturn are
retrograde during this period, Jupiter retrograde in the sign of Aquarius
(Kumbha) native’s 9th house and Saturn will be retrograde in 8th house
of Capricorn (Makar) It is said that malefic planets give results in
retrograde motion however benefice planets lose their power this will
most certainly impact the 8th 9th and 10th houses of the Natives chart, it
would also mean going back over some of the policies and legislation
that were supposed to move forward
Mars returns to Ashlesha in July could trigger issues related to
finances and some aggression in the speech that would further
complicate problems this is a period to take extreme care on 1st July
2021 the transit Mars- Saturn opposition will be exact, and Sun will be
in Adra Nakshatra conjunct natives Lagna this is likely to be extremely
trying period when native is likely to feel quite weak and powerless
and will have to face extreme opposition (the same needs to be
verified with Joe Biden’s chart and the chart of USA as well)
All other further Dashas can be worked on similarly, this book will
help you understand the native’s personality the past, present and a
general understanding of the life of the native, to predict the future of
the native and exact events, one needs to dig deeper in each of the
above concepts, there is a list recommendation for books given to
help you go deeper into the subject.
