 C AMP MAXEY is located about eight
miles north of Paris, Texas. It was
activated July 15th, 1942 with Lieut.
Col. C. H. Palmer as Camp Commander.
The 102nd Infantry Division was the first
division to be organized here and was
activated on September 15th, 1942, with
Gen. John B. Anderson as the Com-
mander General. Col. Robert O. Annin
became the second Camp Commander
on March 25th, 1943. Since its activa-
tion, thousands of soldiers have been
trained here for combat and other active
duties overseas.
Camp Maxey was named in honor of
General Sam Bell Maxey who served
the U. S. Army in a distinguished manner
during the Civil War and later served as
U. S. Senator for the State of Texas. He
was a resident of Paris.
Besides the division in training here,
there are many non-divisional troops and
soldiers of the Station Complement. Dur-
ing maneuvers, the Army Air Forces co-
operates in the training program by
providing fliers for training missions.
Thus, the Army Ground Forces, Army Ser-
vice Forces and Army Air Forces have
had an integral part in the development
of Camp Maxey activities.
The great variety found in northern

Texas terrain provides this Camp with
ideal facilities for working out Infantry
problems. The installations include many
features of training for modern battle
conditions. The Artillery has its own
range along with those furnished for the
smaller caliber guns. The obstacle course
presents stiff problems while the infiltra-
tion course along with the "German
Village" provide a reality to the prob-
lems which are outstanding in such
maneuvers.
It is fortunate that Camp Maxey is lo-
cated so close to Paris, which is a beau-
tiful city of 18,678 people. The Paris
citizens have graciously offered many
recreational activities and a spirit of
helpfulness between the city and camp
has developed through the desire of
both soldier and citizen to speed the war
effort as much as possible.
The facilities on the Post for the soldier's
comfort have been carefully considered.
The picture story in this book tells of a
soldier's life here at Camp Maxey: the
comfortable living quarters; the soldierly
routine; the recreational facilities; the
opportunities for church going; the Post
Exchangewith its many Branches;the good
libraries for Enlisted Men and Officers
and of course, the vital story of training
to make the world's best Infantrymen.

GESTAPO, Himmler, Mellgerel, Washerel, Pruc-
kerie and Verlag. These are but a few names on
building. in the little village located here in Camp
Maley. No, it's not a NOli prison camp ; merely
a village used in tadical training for men of the
infantry un its. The Swastika and German names
he lp odd a bit of authenticity to the set-up.
The village i. made up of one and two stary
building. on each side af the main street. At the
far end of this .treet i. located Gestapo head -
qua rters. Here .upposedly, i. where the German
command po.t is located-nerve center for the
defense of the village. A clo.e look at this build-
ing disclose. literally hundreds af holes where rifle
fire has riddled the wall •.
An ingenious arrangement of ropes and pulleys
is located in different windows of houses through-
out the vi llage. When these are pulled , silhou-
ette targets pop up into view and are fired at
by the attacking forces. These represent snipers who
might be taking shots at them. And another touch
of realism i. added by the dynamite cnarges which
are .et off a. a door is opened ; the.e are used to
represent booby trap. which may be enco"ntered.
Before attacking the village , the me n go through

the infiltration eourse , a carefully planned-out ar-
rangement af barbed wire entanglements, trenches,
dynamite charges and the firing of live ammun i-
tion from three mach ine guns. The men .tart off
from the far end of the course, creep ing and
crawli ng from 100 to 120 yards. They mu.t crowl
under barbed wire which is very clo.e to the
ground . They must keep low; in th is respect there
is very little trouble ; the machine guns as they
fire , take care af that detail. Observing some
men going through the course, it appears as
though they were trying to plow a furrow in the
dirt with their nose •.
Barbed wire enclosures prevent the men from
crawling on top of a dynamite charge, yet close
enough sa that when it goes off, the effed of a
.hell burst i. obta ined . There are five or . i. of
these charge. spread out over the course. Con-
trol af the machine gun fi re and dynamite charges
is handled by the officer in the observation tower.
To reach the infiltration and village course , the
men must first go over an obstacle course, wh ich
in ihelf, i. a test. It's about 800 ya rds long
with barbed wire to get over, concea led trip wires
to couse the men to stumble.
