• Ancient History of Jammu is mentioned in the literary Source
Rajadarshini which was written by Ganesh Das in 1847.
• As per the book , the first empire in Jammu was set up by Agnigir around
900 years before starting of Kaliyuga.
• Earlier Jammu was known as Duggar.

SURYAVANSHI /AGNIGIR DYNASTY.
• It is considered to be the 1st Ruling
Empire in Jammu.
• According to Rajadarshini,
Ayodhya’s king Sudarshana (21st Ayodhaya

descendent of Lord Rama of

Ayodhya) had two sons, Agnivarna
and Agnigir.
• Agnivarna became the king of
Ayodhya, while the younger son
Agnigir, migrated towards Shivalik
hills and settled in present day
Kathua (lower bank of Ravi river).

KING AGNIGIR
• He defeated the local kings and reigned at Bupanagari.

• He ruled over the towns of Pushpavati and Airava.

• He was succeeded by his son VayuShrava.

KING VAYUSHRAVA
• Son of Agnigir, who extended his empire upto Ujh.

• Married Ira Devi, who died young.

• Founded town Irrawati (later Irravan).

• After VayuShrava, Parmetra , Puran Singh, Lakshman , Khat Joshan and Agnigarbah reigned over
Jammu.

• One of his descendant , Agnigarbah extended his empire upto Tawi river .

• Agnigarbah had 18 sons and 3 wives.

• Bahu Lochan and Jambu Lochan were the prominent ones .

BAHU LOCHAN
• He was the elder son of Agnigarbah.

• He founded the towns Dharanagri and Bahunagar and shifted his capital from Airavan to Dharanagri.

• He built the Bahu Fort on the left bank of river Tawi.

• He also founded the city Bahunagar.

• He died in the conflict with the Raja of Sialkot .

JAMBU LOCHAN
• Younger brother of Bahu Lochan.

• After coming in power, he killed the Raja of Sialkot (Chandrahas) ,and annexed territories upto Sindh
and founded the city Jambupura / Jambu or Jammu in 1500 BC, and became the powerful king of
Bahunagar after the conflict.

• He was succeeded by his son Puran karan.

Famous story of a Tiger and a Goat drinking water together at Jambu.

PURAN KARAN
• He shifted his capital from Bahu to Jammu, due to which it became a very important place.

• He had two sons: Daya karan and Darma Karan .

• And was succeeded by Daya karan.

• Daya Karan, according to Tarikh e Hassan, Daya karan sent a force led by his sons and conquered
Kashmir.

• From this time onwards, Jammu kings ruled over Kashmir for around 653 years.

• King Somadatta was the last Jammu ruler, who ruled Kashmir .

• When Daya Karan became the king of Kashmir and his younger brother, Dharma Karan ruled over
Jammu.

• Kriti Karan , Agni Karan and Shakti Karan were the successors of King Dharma Karan.

SHAKTI KARAN
• Shakti Karan extended his empire upto Pir Panjal ranges (Banihal).

• He was a great learned man.

• He introduced the calendar of Shastra Era (Saptarshi Samvat ).

• He was well versed and invented the Dogri script.

• The Dogri script is derived from Sharada script which in turn has come from Brahmi script .

• King Shakti Karan probably innovated the Brahmi script.

• Shiv Prakash is considered to be the last ruler of this dynasty.

• He was ruling Jammu during the Mahabharata era.
