1.A drive has the following parameters:

T=150-0.1N, Nm where N is the speed in rpm
Load Torque, Tl=100 N m
Initially the drive is operating in steady state condition. The characteristics of load Torque are
Changed to Tl= -100Nm . Calculate initial and final equilibrium speeds.
Solution:
At steady state; Tm=Tl
150-0.1N=100
N= 500 rpm ……… (initial State)
After the load torque is changed:
Tl= -100N/m
150-0.1N=-100; N=2500 rpm ………. (final State)
2. A motor is used to drive a hoist. Motor characteristics are given by:
Quadrant I,II & IV : T= 200-0.2N, Nm
Quadrant II,III & IV: T= -200-0.2N, Nm
Where N is the speed in rpm. When hoist is loaded, the net load torque Tl=100Nm
and when its unloaded, the net load torque Tl= -80Nm. Obtain Equilibrium speeds
operation in all four quadrants.
Solution:
Now under loaded condition:
Tl= 100Nm
At steady state:
200-0.2N= 100 …… (case 1)
N= 500rpm (Quad I)
Lly,
-200-0.2N = 100 ………. (case 2)
N= -1500 rpm….. (Quad IV)

Under unloaded condition:

Tl= -80Nm
At steady state:
200-0.2N = -80….. (Case 1)
N= 1400 rpm….. (Quad II)
-200-0.2N = -80
N= -600 rpm…… (Quad III)
3.A motor drives four loads, two loads have rotational motion and two loads have
translation motion. Moment of inertia of the motor is 1.2kgm2. Motor runs at a
speed of 1000rpm. Following are the details about the four loads. Calculate the
equivalent inertia of system referred to the motor shaft and power ratings of the
motor, assuming negligible losses in the transmission system.
LOAD TYPE OF MOTION SPEED INERTIA/MASS TORQUE/FORCE
I Rotational 200 rpm 7 kg/m2 10 Nm
II Rotational 200 rpm 5 kg/m2 6 Nm
III Translation 10 m/s 10 kg 20 N
IV Translation 10 m/s 20 kg 30 N

Solution:
𝑁 𝑟𝑎𝑑
speed of motor (Ꙍ) = 1000 rpm= 2𝜋 = 104.71
60 𝑠𝑒𝑐
Moment of inertia of motor, J0 = 1.2 kg/m2
Total moment of inertia referred to motor shaft;

a1= 200/1000 = 0.2; a2= 200/1000 = 0.2

J= 1.2 + (0.2)2 (7) + (0.2)2 (5) + (10) (10/104.71)2 + (20) (10/104.71)2
= 1.953 kg/m2
Total Power delivered:
P = Tl X Ꙍ
Total equivalent torque to motor shaft is

Since losses are negligible Ꞃ= 100%

10 6 20 10 30 10
= 0.2 𝑋 + 0.2 𝑋 + + ( )
1 1 1 104.72 1 104.72
= 7.975 Nm

There fore total power delivered= 7.975 x 104.72 = 835.104W

4.A weight of 500kg is being lifted up a uniform speed of 1.5m/s by a winch driven by
a motor running at a speed of 1000rpm. The moment of inertia of the motor and winch
are 0.5 & 0.3 Kg/m2. Calculate the motor torque and equivalent moment of inertia
referred to the motor shaft. In absence of weight, motor develops a torque of 100Nm
when running at 1000rpm.
Solution:
𝜋𝑁
Ꙍm = 2
60
= 104.72 rad/sec
Total inertia is given as:

= 0.5 + 0.3 + 500 (1.5/104.72)2

= 0.902 kg/m2
The total torque produced is given as:

= 100 + (500 X 9.8/1) (1.5/104.72)

= 170.187 Nm
