Evaluation Purpose and Descriptions

Faculty Evaluations

Purpose: The faculty evaluation program is to improve the quality of instruction. Evaluation
results may be used when considering faculty for rehire or advancement, but should not
constitute the sole determining factor. The administration reserves the right to sit in on any
classroom session for the purpose of evaluation. Other factors could include service to the
institution, involvement in professional organizations, and progressive scholarship. Methods
of evaluation are as follows:

1. Personal Evaluations: These evaluations will be done by the instructor in conjunction

with the preparation or revision of the course to improve teaching performance.
2. Student Evaluations: Student evaluations will be done in all the courses the instructor
teaches. Evaluation will occur on Populi by the students to be collected and analyzed
for future improvement. Frequency distributions and group means, as well as
individual item analysis, will be compared across the faculty.
3. Syllabus Analysis: The Academic Committee in cooperation with the AD will review a
sample of each instructor's course syllabus to ensure that proper attention has been
given to meeting published syllabus requirements [see Syllabi template in Faculty
Handbook].
4. Course Learning Outcome Form: The Course Learning Outcome Form for each
course taught by a professor will be reviewed and analyzed for direction about future
improvement.
5. Classroom Performance: The Academic Dean and the Department Chair reserve the
right to sit in on any classroom session for the purpose of evaluation.
6. End of Year Evaluations: Full-time faculty members will schedule an end of the year
evaluation with the AD during the following Fall semester. This assessment will involve
either a self-evaluation form and/or an evaluation form completed by the CAO.

Support Staff Evaluations: All staff members are evaluated against their job description by their
immediate supervisor. Job descriptions are revised regularly to accurately reflect the
expectations.

Evaluation of the President: The President is evaluated each spring by the Board of Directors
in regular session. The job description and evaluation are available in the Board Manual.
Board of Directors (Evaluations and Assessment):
1. Each member of the Board of Directors completes a self-evaluation to help improve
effectiveness [using the Board of Directors SurveyMonkey Evaluation].
6 Southeastern F.W.B. College Assessment Plan

2. Annually the Board of Directors reviews and approves the following:

a. Faith Statement
b. Mission Statement
c. Institutional Objectives (consistent with the Faith and Mission Statement and
written in measurable terms)

Program Evaluations/Assessment

Components:

1. Comparative Curricular Analysis: Each Department Chair is responsible for

comparing respective program requirements to similar institutions on the following
rotating basis:

Academic Program/Major Review Cycle

Department Date of Review
Bible 2021-2022
Christian Education 2023-2024

2. Senior Graduate Interviews are conducted annually by the Department Chairs during
the end of the Spring semester.
3. Student Surveys are administered during April. (The school office puts the survey
online and leaves it up for one week. The Assessment Director then reviews the
data, quantifies it, and forwards it to members of the Administrative Committee.)
4. Program (Curricular) Development Review: Semi-annual reviews and revisions take
place during the course of the college year. Proposed changes are submitted to the
Academic Committee for further review.
5. Alumni Surveys: Surveys are sent to alumni who graduated five years previously.
Purpose: Five years affords students sufficient time to complete most mission
requirements, to complete graduate school, and/or to have some experience in their
field of study, thus giving them better insight into their experience at Southeastern
Free Will Baptist College.

Procedures for Department Chairs

Department Chairs need to be actively involved in the Assessment of their Programs. Each
Department Chair should perform the following tasks:

1. Contact each graduating senior within the respective department at the end of the
Spring semester.
2. Collect and maintain an assessment binder of data in office. This binder may
include data collected during senior interviews, advisement, mentoring,
comparative curricular analysis, letters from employers, or any other method
pertinent to that particular program evaluation.
3. Include changes that are made to the program as a result of information collected.
Southeastern F.W.B. College Assessment Plan 7

4. Track Graduates: Keep a list of graduates, year of graduation, and current occupation
and/or graduate school attended. This information will help assess the program by
evaluating the students’ vocation as it is linked to their program of study.
5. Document data collection and any proposed changes to the program. These
changes should be submitted to the Academic Committee for approval.

General Education Program Assessment

Components:

1. Junior Focus Groups: Juniors are engaged annually for assessment on specified
day in April/May. (Each student who is classified as a junior is notified in advance
of date, time, and place.) Members of the Assessment Committee ask specific
questions about each course taught in the general education program. Data is
compiled and given to the various instructors who teach in the General Education
Program.
2. Alumni Surveys: Questions or comments about the general education program are
discussed by the Assessment Committee in coordination with program reviews and
then forwarded to the faculty.

Assessment of Students and Student Life

Assessment of Students

1. Classroom Evaluations: Instructors set academic requirements in their course

syllabus and assign grades according to each student’s academic performance.
2. Program Specific Requirements: Students are required to fulfill certain academic,
internship, and program specific requirements as are outlined in their program of
study and are evaluated upon the completion of each requirement.
3. Capstone Courses: Required of seniors in most degree programs, these courses
assess the overall skills and knowledge that have been acquired throughout each
student’s educational experience in a particular program.

Assessment of Library (Full assessment program on file in the Office of the Librarian)

1. Student Surveys: Students will be surveyed in April of each year. Feedback will be
solicited for areas such as usefulness, practicality, and availability of library resources
and workers.
2. Faculty Surveys: Faculty members will be surveyed in March of each year. Feedback
will be solicited for areas such as timeliness of available resources, helpfulness of
library staff in meeting classroom needs, and required and supplemental reading needs
for courses.
3. Circulation: As reported with IPEDS beginning April 2020, circulation data will include
the number of times a resource has circulated during both Fall and Spring semesters,
not counting renewed resources. These numbers apply to both physical and digital
resources held by the Library.
4. Gate Counts: Beginning in Fall 2020, library patrons will be counted, and data will be
compiled for both Fall and Spring semesters to analyze the trends of library visits. In
the following years, compiled data will be compared to future years’ trends.
8 Southeastern F.W.B. College Assessment Plan

5. New Student Survey: New students will be surveyed after the end of their orientation
meetings. This survey includes an information literacy component presented by the
Library. Feedback will be solicited for session clarity, usability, and functionality of the
presentation.
6. Donations: An assessment of donations to the Library during each fiscal year will be
collected. Donations will include both physical resource and monetary types. In future
years, data will be compared to prior years’ information to analyze trends.
7. Student Workers: In December and April of each year, student workers in the Library
will be evaluated for their job performance. Also included with this evaluation will be
individual interviews to assess student worker perceptions and receive suggestions.
8. Physical Resource Assessment: Each physical, cataloged resource is analyzed for
age, condition, circulation (both total numbers and most recent checkout), and
applicability to current college programs. This assessment is conducted every five
years during the Spring semester.

Assessment of Student Services

1. Student Surveys
2. Alumni Surveys in coordination with program reviews

Assessment of Student Life

1. Student Surveys
2. Alumni Surveys in coordination with program reviews

Assessment of Service to the Local Church

Strategic Long-Range Plan (SLRP)

Data compiled by the Assessment Committee is distributed to the Administrative Committee and is
used in the planning and implementing of the Strategic Long Range Plan (SLRP).

Evaluation of Assessment

Process: Each year, the Assessment Committee will choose an area of assessment to be
evaluated. The committee will evaluate the following:

1. Any forms or instruments being used in this particular area of

assessment.
2. The percentage or ratio of participants from the targeted population.
3. The procedure for administering these assessment tools and the success in
gathering data.
4. The effective distribution of the data.
Southeastern F.W.B. College Assessment Plan 9

Procedure: The Assessment Committee will perform the following tasks:

1. Evaluate the assessment tool. A form will be provided to the committee members
to evaluate the instrument being utilized (i.e., form survey).
2. Evaluate the participation rate.
3. Suggest and discuss improvements.
4. Decide what changes should be implemented.

Assessment Month is held annually during the Spring semester.

1. Junior Focus Groups: Meeting in a classroom with members of the Assessment

Committee, the junior focus group primarily evaluates the general education
program. This data is compiled and forwarded to the instructors in the General
Education department.
2. Student Satisfaction Surveys: All students meet in chapel on a specified day for the
survey instructions. Then students are sent to various computers on campus to
complete the online survey. The survey will be available online for one week. The
survey includes questions which assess the entire campus.
3. Senior Graduate Interviews: To assess their experience in their particular program,
seniors meet at various scheduled times with their Department Chairs.

Student Evaluation of Instruction

Purpose

The student evaluation of instruction is an important assessment instrument for the evaluation (by
students) of the instruction of individual courses. The results can indicate to the instructors the
areas that they are doing well and/or the areas that need improvement in either course content or
instruction.

Procedure

1. The evaluation instrument will be made available on Populi at the end of the
semester and should be completed by the last day of classes.
2. Instructors must explain to their classes the importance of the student evaluation of
instruction. Students are required to complete the course evaluation instrument to see
their grade in a particular course.
3. In class, instructors must announce that the course evaluations are open and
must be completed by the end of the semester.

Responses

The responses from the student evaluations will be sent to each instructor after grades are
completed. The AD will also receive a copy.
10 Southeastern F.W.B. College Assessment Plan

Exceptions

Courses with less than two students will not be recorded in order to protect student identity
and insure confidentiality.

Evaluating Institution Publications

All publications are evaluated, revised, and updated on a regular basis. The principle publication is
the annual College Catalog which is revised and updated annually under the leadership of the
Academic Dean. Prior to inclusion in the College Catalog, all curriculum changes must be approved
by the faculty, administration, and Board under the guidelines outlined in Curriculum Development
Review. The Student Handbook is revised and updated each year by the Dean of Students and
other employees involved in student affairs.

The Board of Directors has the final authority for policies published in the catalog and the
handbooks of the institution. To allow a reasonable time for review and questions, members of the
Board of Directors will be provided the proposed catalog or handbook at least one week prior to
any vote for its approval. The existing publications remain in force until new publications are
approved by the Board.
