Lesson Plan in Mathematics Grade 8

School Year 2022-2023

Date: February 29, 2023 Quarter: 3rd Quarter

Time Started: Time Finished:
I. OBJECTIVES/S:
At the end of the lesson the students will be able to:
A. Cognitive: Identify the x and y coordinate of a point.
B. Affective: Reflect the importance of using point slope form in finding the equation
of the line.
C. Psychomotor: Operate the point slope form in finding the equation of the line.
II. SUBJECT MATTER:
A. Topic: Finding the Equation of the Line given the Point and Slope.
B. Reference/s:
C. Materials Used: Laptop, PPT, SMART TV, chalk, etc.
D. Subject Integration: Mathematics, English, ICT, Mother Tongue, etc.
E. Value Focus: Attentiveness & Rationality

Preliminary Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

A. A. Review  What is slope?  The slope denoted by m is a
numerical value that
describes the steepness of a
line and is usually
determined by calculating
the ratio of the rise of over
run between two points.

 What is the slope  Ax + By = C

standard form of the
linear equation?

 What is the slope-  y = mx + b

intercept form
B. Drill  Perform the indicated  The students will answer
operation: the following

2 (x + 1) 2 (x + 1) = 2x + 1
-1 (x – 4) -1 (x – 4) = -x + 4
1 (x – 1) 1 (x – 1) = x – 1

 Change the following

into Standard form and
Slope-intercept form of
a linear equation:

y+2=x–3  Slope intercept form

y=x–3-2
y=x–5
 Stand form
-x + y = -5
-1(-x + y = -5)
x+y=5

3  Slope intercept from

y+3= x+4
2 3
y= x+4–3
2
3
y= x+1
2

 Standard form
3
y= x+1
2
−3
x+y=1
2
−3
-2( 2 x + y = 1)-2
3x - 2y = -2

C. Motivation  “Help me!”  The students will help the

duck to find the pond

 What do you see in the  Duck

Illustration?

 It is summer and it’s

really hot and the duck
needed to swim in the
pond to cool its body.
The problem is, along of
its way, the duck stuck
at four roads with a
mark of four different
equation. The duck
doesn’t know where’s
the exact equation road
to the pond. While the
duck standing on its
location given in point
(0,5) the duck notices a
guide (pond road at
−2
slope ).
3

 What do you think the  The student will guess

correct equation road to
the pond?
D. Activity  Point – Slope Form  Students listen.
y – y = m (x – x )

where:
m – slope
x1 – x-coordinate
y1 – y-coordinate

 Group the class into 5

groups.
(Based on the story)

the problem?

 On your 1 whole sheet

solution. Then arrange
your answer in standard

Sol’n: y - y1 = m (x – x1)
 Apply the formula y - y1

and solve. 3(y – 5) = (x – 0)3
3
3y – 15 = -2 (x – 0)
3y – 15 = -2x
2x + 3y = 15 is the
equation of the line which
the duck needed to enter to
go on the exact location of
the pond.

 Group representative report

 Check the answers

E. Analysis  What are the things we  identify or locate the x1 and
need to remember in y1 of the given point and the
finding the equation of slope.
the line using point-
slope form?

 What are the properties  Addition Property of

of equality we use in equality
point-slope form to find  Distributive Property
the linear equation?  Multiplication Property

D. Abstraction  What is the formula of  y - y1 = m (x – x1)

point-slope form?

E. Application  “Make your own linear  The group do the task.

equation”
(The same group)
Give a point and a slope
that will create your
own equation of the line,
within 5 minutes.
F. Evaluation  On your note book, find
the equation of the line
in standard form Ax +
By = C.

1. m = 2, through (-2,  2x – y = -9
5)
2. m = -1, through (4, -  x+y=1
3)

G. Assignment  Find the equation of the

line given m = ½,
through (7, 4), arrange
your answer in standard
form and slope intercept
form.
