Midlands Wellness and Fitness Centre is
situated at Howick Medical Centre and ca-
ters for everyone. The gym has a fully-
equipped cardiovascular area, circuit, free-
weight area and we offer Spinning and Pilates
classes daily.
The gym offers flexible, affordable mem-
bership subscriptions, is open long hours to
cater for everyone’s needs and has immacu-
late change room and shower facilities.
Established 12 years ago, the facility was
officially opened by Professor Tim Noakes,
world renowned Sports Scientist from the
University of Cape Town.

The Jungle Book
Playhouse Opera Theatre: 29 June – 15 July
Following the success of last year’s hugely
popular July holiday production of Winnie-
the-Pooh, KickstArt is staging an even big-
ger, more elaborate stage version of the clas-
sic children’s novel, The Jungle Book at the
Playhouse Opera Theatre between 29 June
and 15 July this year.
Adapted by Steven Stead from the book by
Rudyard Kipling, The Jungle Book prom-
ises to be a theatrical feast for young and
old. Ten of Durban’s best actors are joined
by a team of 15 talented children and sev-
eral magnificent, life-size puppets. Together
they bring the fascinating stories of the jun-
gle boy, Mowgli, to vivid life on a revolving
jungle set, covered with lush vines and ex-
otic flowers designed by Greg King with light-
ing by successful New York-based designer,
Farley Whitfield.
Costumes: Peter Court, original music: Evan
Roberts. The cast is headed by Sean de Klerk
as Mowgli, the jungle boy raised by wolves.
His animal mentors are played by Darren
King as Bagheera the black panther, Rowan
Bartlett as Baloo the amiable bear, and
Anthony Stonier as Kaa, the wily python.
Together, the four friends struggle to thwart
the evil scheming of Mowgli’s arch-enemy,
Shere Khan, the tiger, played by Peter Court.
Others in the cast include Jailoshini Naidoo
as Mother Wolf, Michael Gritten as the Mon-

40 years of experience in exercise testing and
prescription and therefore can deal with most
exercise needs.
On joining, each member undergoes an
assessment to ensure that exercise is safe for
them and so that an individualised exercise
programme can be compiled. Once the pro-
gramme is ready it is supervised by a staff
member for as long as it takes for one to get
used to the routine.
Members joining on our debit order op-
tion will receive free re-assessments on a
regular basis (four assessments per year not
closer than 3 months apart).

by qualified instructors who, despite these
activities being group classes, also pay par-

In addition to the gym activities we also
offer a number of specialised programmes:
1. Healthy Weight Programme: This
is a group-based programme that is holistic
in nature and is designed to cater for people
who are serious about making and manag-
ing lifestyle behaviour patterns that facili-
tate weight-loss and healthy living.
2. Swing Science Programme: A sci-
entific programme designed to enhance golf-

There are only 15 performances between 29
June and the 15 July. Performances are
scheduled Tuesday to Saturday at 2.30pm,
4pm on Sunday and Friday at 7pm. There is
ONE extra Saturday evening performance
on the 30 June at 7pm. Tickets cost R80 for
adults and R60 for children under 12 years.
BOOK AT COMPUTICKET. There is no dis-
count for pensioners or students on advance
booked tickets, but on presentation of the
appropriate ID at the box-office on the day
of the performance, concession seats of R60
each may be purchased for CASH ONLY.
Please note: This production is not suit-
able for children under 4 years of age.

Annie - the evergreen family musical based
on the cartoon strip of Little Orphan Annie
will be the next in the impressively long line
of musicals under the banner of the Unilever
Young Performers Project which keeps a
host of talented youngsters occupied during
the July school holidays and comes to the
Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 6 – 22 July.
Annie - the 2007 Unilever Young Perform-
ers’ project follows the last six success-
ful Unilever Young Performers Musicals,
Curtain Up, One Voice, Grease, Oliver, Fid-

ing proficiency. The programme includes a
comprehensive physical assessment and
video analysis of the golf swing. It is en-
dorsed by Sean Ludgater, professional coach.
The benefits of participation include im-
proved driving distance, improved accuracy,
lower scores, injury prevention, playing lon-
gevity.
3. Cycle Science Programme: A
unique programme designed to assist cyclists
with their training and racing. Based on
current science, and using state-of-the-art
technology, the programme offers scientific,
computerised assessment of:
· pedalling efficiency
· maximum heart rate
· peak and average power
· “anaerobic” capacity
· Aerobic capacity
The programme is also designed to cater
for indoor training and coaching sessions that
can be heart rate based or power based.
In addition we provide a computer-as-
sisted bike set-up service.
4. Rowing Project: This project de-
velop out of a request from the Howick High
School rowing club for assistance. The pro-
gramme offers computerised ergo testing and
programme prescriptions that are individu-
alised and designed to improve rowing per-
dler on the Roof and last year’s The Wiz.
The Unilever Young Performers Project – a
visionary project masterminded by Linda van
der Veen from Snazzi Events and supported
by Unilever utilizes a cast of high school as-
pirant performers. The show, however, is
managed professionally on every level – us-
ing a professional venue, director and pro-
duction team to give the kids a taste of life in
the professional world of showbiz. This year
it will be directed by Charon Williams Ros,
lighting design by Brandon Bunyon, chore-
ography by Janet Hare, Musical Direction by
Dawn Selby featuring a live five piece band.

Main Ou’s
Catalina Theatre: until 8 July
The Bruin Ou’s are the Main Ou’s in a dou-
ble bill of two one act comedy-plays starring
Hamish Kyd and Gail Snyman – packaged
as Mains Ou’s - which begins to explore is-
sues of identity and what it means to be a
Coloured person in Durban, which comes to
the Catalina Theatre from 26 June until 8
July.
Hamish Kyd and Gail Snyman are two vet-
eran Durban theatre personalities and com-
munity activists who have previously staged
work which focuses on issues and identity
with specific reference to Durban’s Coloured
community. Knowing You, knowing Me is
a poignant comedy which looks at an im-
portant chapter in the life of Lenny Stalk. His
son, Otis Stalk, is a final year Fashion De-

formance. We are proud to have assisted the
Howick High School rowers who achieved
several medals at provincial and national level
earlier this year.
5. Massage Therapy: Therapeutic and
Sports massage sessions can be booked on
an appointment basis.
Additional services include our exercise
programme at Amberfield for the elderly and
our involvement with Howick High School,
Michaelhouse and Hilton College. The
Amberfield programme is designed to assist
elderly people with developing and maintain-
ing strength and balance so that the risk of
falling is minimized and so that quality of
life is maintained.
At Howick High School the staff are in-
volved with coaching sport and improving
fitness levels in young sportsmen and women
so that the risk of injury is kept as low as
possible. As part of the Biokinetic Practice
we run a Sports Injuries Clinic at
Michaelhouse and Hilton College in which
we assist boys with rehabilitation of sporting
and other injuries and ensure that they are
fully fit to return to sport.
At Hilton College we also offer athletes
sports conditioning programmes in which
sport-specific physical conditioning is the
focus.
Located inside the gym is the Biokinetic
practice. This is a practice staffed by two
qualified Biokineticists and two Biokinetic
Interns.
The practice caters for specialised exer-
cise needs including diabetics, osteoporosis,
stroke, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,
low tone children, back pain, joint replace-
ments, all sports injuries and motor vehicle
accident victims.
Charges for services provided are levied
at medical aid rates and are claimable back
from most medical aid schemes.

Snyman has participated in the Playhouse
Women’s Art Festival in 1994 and the BAT
Centre Adams’ Playwright festival in With
Tears in my Navy Blue Eyes, and she has
toured UK, Canada and Australia with the
production. The piece, based on her own
experiences in Wentworth and Merebank,
offers insight into South Africa township life
over the last 40 years based on extraordi-
nary stories of her youth. It is a vignette en-
capsulating the emotional, psychological and
physical experiences of women in these com-
munities.
