ISYS 105 Some Hints and Tips for Excel 1


1. To fill (or copy) a cell to the adjacent cells, use Fill handle Select small black square and drag it when you see the pointer + pointer; Ex. Copy From Jan to Feb, Mar and Apr, etc to adjacent cells; 2. To check spelling, Review tab/proofing/spelling; 3. To adjust the size of columns and rows, select the columns or rows and doul clicks on the line of the cell when you see + pointer; watch on the pixel numbers while dragging; 4. To format cells, right click and chose format cells and choose number tab or others; 5. To insert functions into a cell, use = sign or fx or click formulas tab; 6. Use comma style in Home tab, number group when it is necessary; 7. Use Home tab/ font group/ border button when it is necessary; 8. To Merge and Center, go to Home tab/alignment group when it is necessary; 9. To Insert Header/Footer, go to Home tab/Text, Header&Footer; 10.To set the margin in the page setup, go to Page Layout tab, page setup group/margins, etc.; 11.To rename a worksheet, move the cursor to the area of sheets and right click; 12.To select all worksheets, move the cursor to the area of sheets and right click 13.To clear the cell, go to Home tab/editing/clear and choose one of the options; 14.To Wrap text, go to Home tab/Alignment group, and click wrap text button; 15.To select a field value from other sheet, type = and enter, choose the cell from the other worksheet; 16.To rotate text, Right click, choose format cells/alignment and click orientation; 17.Use countif function when it necessary; 18.For conditional formatting, use if function; 19.Applying conditional formatting, go to Home tab, Styles group, click Conditional Formatting; 20.To freeze a screen, choose a specific row and go to View tab/Window group/Freeze panes; 21.Us e NOW function to pull the current date from Formulas tab, function library, date& time; 22.To sum, =sum(c1:c12) as an example; Or autosum in home tab/editing group; 23.To chart data, insert tab/charts group, click Colum, and chart styles 24.To average, =average(c1:c12) as an example; 25.To get median, type =median(c1:c12) as an example; 26.To get lowest, type =min(c1:c12) as an example; 27.To get highest, type =max(c1:c12) as an example;

28.For table processing, select the data range for the table, and go to Insert tab/Tables group/Table; 29.Do sort or filter functions in the table column; 30.To remove the table, go to Design/Tools group/Convert to range button 31.To point an absolute reference position, use a function key, f4 at the right side of the cell address;
