FAN STITCH STOCKING

BY BRITTANY TYLER
This unusually constructed stocking is a great holiday multi-tasker. Learn how to make an afterthought knitted heel, play with crochet fan stitch, and become proficient at Kitchener stitch, all while creating an heirloom stocking to treasure for years to come. Maybe you should make some Heart Strings mittens or a Cranberry Sauce hat to nestle inside the stocking, too.

CRAFT Knit and crochet DIFFICULTY Intermediate knit and crochet MATERIALS Yarn Noro Kureyon (100% wool; 110 yds [98 m]/ 1.75 oz [50 gm]; CYCA 4) #255: one skein (CC). Manos del Uruguay Clasica Wool (100% wool; 138 yds [122 m]/ 3.5 oz [100 gm]; CYCA 4) #40 goldenrod: one skein (MC) Needles US size 9(5.5mm) double pointed needles. Hook US size J(6mm) Notions 11 (12, 13, 14) Stitch markers (one different to mark the beginning of the round); cable needle; sewing needle and matching thread. AVAILABLE SIZES One size MEASUREMENTS Approximately 24 long from cuff to toe and 10.5 in circumference around the body of the stocking

GAUGE 16 dc and 4 rows = 4 19 sts and 26 rows = 4 in Stockinette Gauge is not absolutely critical for this design. As long as you are close to correct on both knit and crochet gauges, your stocking will turn out proportional. If you are significantly off in one stitch but not the other, please change needle size to bring your gauge closer to consistent within both crafts, otherwise your stocking may have incorrectly shaped areas. NOTES You dont have to cut your yarn between color changes. Keep both yarns attached and simply alternate between colors as needed pulling the yarn up creating a short vertical float on the inside of your stocking as you go. INSTRUCTIONS BODY OF STOCKING With crochet hook and CC, ch 42, sl st in beg ch to form a circle, being very careful to make sure the ch is not twisted. Rnd 1: Ch 1 (does not count as st, here and throughout), then sc in each ch around, sl st in beg sc to join. (42 sc) Rnd 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc, here and throughout), 2 dc in same st, sk 2 st, sc in next st, sk 2 st, *5 dc in next st, sk 2 st, sc in next st, sk 2 st; rep from * around, work 2 dc in same st as beg ch-3, sl st in top of beg ch-3 to join, changing to MC in the sl st. Do not turn, here and throughout. Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, *sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts; rep from * around, sl st in beg sc to join, changing to CC in sl st. Repeat Rnds 2 and 3 eleven more times, then Rnd 2 once. Divide for heel opening Rnd A: Ch 1, sc in same st and pm in this st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, (sc in next st, sk 2 sts, 5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts) twice, sc in next st and pm in this st, ch 23, sk next 23 sts, sl st in beg sc to join, changing to CC in sl st. (Note: the markers placed in this rnd will remain for reference in picking up the knit heel sts.) Rnd B: Ch 3, 2 dc in same st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts, (5 dc in next st, sk 2 sts, sc in next st, sk 2 sts) twice, 5 dc in next st, (sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch) 3 times, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, sk 2 ch, 2 dc in same st as beg ch-3, sl st in top of beg ch-3 to join, changing to MC in sl st. Work Rnd 3 of stocking body, then repeat Rnds 2 and 3 five times, then Rnd 2 once more. End off CC and MC.

CUFF With double-pointed needles, MC and WS of the top of the stocking facing, working in the foundation ch pick up and knit 42 sts around top opening, pm. Rnd 1: *p2, p1fb; rep from * around. (56 sts) Rnd 2: Knit all sts. Rnd 3: *k2, p2; rep from * around. Repeat Rnd 3 until cuff measures 2.5 or desired length. Bind off all sts loosely in rib pattern. HEEL Hold the stocking upside-down, with RS of the fabric facing, so that the heel opening faces you. Attach MC at the center shell of the lower edge of the opening (this should be centered between the two markers which were placed on Rnd A of the stocking body heel opening). With one double-pointed needle, pick up and knit 11 sts along the opening to the first marker to the left of center (this is needle A). With a second needle, pick up and knit 22 sts along the top of the opening, working to the second marker (this is needle B). With a third needle, pick up and knit 11 sts along the remainder of the opening (this is needle C). You should have 44 sts total. The beginning and end of each rnd is between needles C and A. Begin heel shaping Rnd 1: Knit around Rnd 2: On needle A, knit to within 3 sts of end of needle, k2tog, k1. On needle B, k1, ssk, k to within 3 sts of end of needle, k2tog, k1. On needle C, k1, ssk, k to end. Repeat rnds 1 and 2 until three sts rem on needles A and C, and 6 sts rem on needle B. Cut yarn, leaving a long tail, and Kitchener stitch remaining sts to graft closed. TOE Hold stocking upside down so that the sole of the stocking is facing you. Visually locate the center of the sole (this should line up exactly with the center of your heel, right where the beginning and end of your heel-shaping round was). Attach MC here, and with one double-pointed needle, pick up and knit 11 sts, just like you did for the heel. If you find it helpful to place markers by visually lining up the side points of the toe just like the side points of the heel were marked, please do. Again, this is needle A. With a second needle (B), pick up and knit 22 sts along the top of the toe, and with a third needle (C), pick up and knit 11 sts along the remainder of the toe opening. Work toe shaping the same as the heel shaping, graft sts and weave in all ends.

HANGING LOOP Hold stocking right-side up with WS facing. Attach double strand of MC at center back of stocking where knit sts were picked up, and with crochet hook, ch 15, sl st in beg ch to join. End off, and securely knot the last end to the tail where yarn was joined to reinforce the joint to the stocking.

FINISHING Weave in ends. Block stocking, and line if desired.
