Question: Bravery shines when one’s courage is put to the test.

Using the details from the novel you have studied ,choose a character that shows bravery .Give your
opinion on how it helped to solve his/her problem. Support you answer with close reference to the text.

Based on the novel Captain Nobody written by Dean Pitchford that I have studied, there is one
character that shows his bravery when he is trying to solve his problems, that is Newton Newman who
is also known as Captain Nobody.

The first event that shows Newt is brave is when he was asked by Cecil to help him to get a big bass
drum. The event was started when he was going back home to show his parents his Captain Nobody
costume before they went back to hospital. However, Captain Nobody’s walkie-talkie rang and Cecil told
him to meet at the corner of Warren and Kander. After they met each other, Cecil told Captain Nobody
that he wished Captain Nobody could get the big bass drum for him as he really wanted to become a
drummer. Nevertheless, Captain Nobody refused to do so as he is an acrophobia. He does not dare to
climb up the ladder to get the big bass drum that was highly located on the top of the dumpster.
However, with the bravery in the heart of Captain Nobody, he still decided to help Cecil to get the bass
drum to fulfil his dream. He slowly climbed up the ladder and successfully eased the drum into Cecil’s
waiting hands .Cecil was very happy and grateful for Captain Nobody’s help. In my opinion, this event
shows that Captain Nobody was willing to come across his weakness to conquer his fear. We should look
forward to Captain Nobody and make him as our role model.

Secondly, Captain Nobody also shows his bravery when he is trying to save Reggie Ratner from
committing suicide. Reggie Ratner represented the Chargers of Merrimac High while Chris represented
the Ferocious Ferrets of Fillmore High School. These two teams were going to have a big game in the
Appleton. However, an incident happened when Chris was lying down on the field and Reggie Ratner
was being accused for knocking down Chris into coma. After the big game, everyone in the Appleton
harassed or teased behind Reggie Ratner. One day, during the lunch break, there were news reports on
TV that the frustrated Reggie Ratner had climbed to the roof of Appleton Water Tower, the tallest
suicide building in town. New tried his best to recall back what was happened during the big game and
he soon discovered that it is not Reggie Ratner who should be responsible for the incident, instead it is
Darry Peeps who knocked Chris into a coma. Therefore, Newt thinks that he should be brave to reveal
the truth, then he quickly went to the water tower to calm down Reggie Ratner. Although the
supportive structure of water tower,including the ladder, were ot as strong as it used to be,Captain
Nobody still managed to shilter his way to reach Reggie Ratner despites the other challenges that he had
to face. Captain Nobody told Reggie that he knew everything but later he learned that the purpose of
Reggie climbed the water tower was just to vandalize the water tank. The truth was actually Reggie’s left
foot was stuck and he needed Captain Nobody to untie his shoelace of which Captain Nobody managed
to help him out. This event ended with Captain Nobody and Reggie Ratner was land on the big soft
mattress after they lost their balance and fall from the ladder. This clearly shows that Captain Nobody’s
bravery makes him successfully save Reggie Ratner and enables everyone knows the truth so that they
can stop their harassments towards Reggie.

In conclusion, everyone should learn to do the right things at the right time no matter how people judge
us. We should be courageous and do not give up easily when facing challenges in life in order to become
a successful person.
