MSG_MODAL Continue At this point, when you look at your CDI, you should see two
lines: one horizontal, one vertical.

MSG_MODAL Continue Once we get on course for the ILS approach, these lines
(“needles”) will indicate which direction you need to fly to stay on course.

MSG_MODAL Continue The vertical needle shows your lateral or horizontal

(left/right) deviation from the ILS course. Likewise, the horizontal needle shows
your vertical (up/down) deviation.

MSG_MODAL Continue If you point the plane’s nose toward the needles (for instance,
by flying right when the vertical needle is off to the right, or by flying up when
the horizontal needle is up above the horizon line), you’ll eventually intercept
the course.

MSG_MODAL Continue Of course, this is all moot for now: we’re perpendicular to the
runway, so we won’t start following the ILS guidance until the ATC instructs us to
turn toward the runway.

MSG_MODAL OK For now, we’ll just continue on heading 070 at 3,000 ft.
