The maximum allowable operating pressure Should be reduced by applying a thermal derating factor. Tablet Temper | DeratingFector 70 T 30 087 20 o7 50 058 The recuced maximum allowable operating oressure under static pressure is determined by multiplying the PN rating of the pipe by the derating factor given in Table | or by interpolation from the graph in Figure 1. Design Operating temperature : ‘The material temperature under consideration is the average temperature of the pipe wall under operational conditions. In most instances t may be assumed that the pine temperatures equal to elevated tempersture ofthe fluid being carted. Where a temperature differential exits between the uid in the pipe and external environment. The operating temperature may be taken as the mean ofthe Internal and external pipe surface temperatures. For the usel case of turbulent flow of fudinside the pipe, the inside surace temperature may be taken s the temperature of the fluid, The rate of heat transfer accross the wall of a PVC pipe is low, and provided the exterior of the pipe is well ventilated. the external surface will be neer embient. Where heet transfer to or from the surrounding material is very slow, the external surface temperature will be neer to that of the intemal surface. it may be necessary in citcal cases to establish surface temperature characteristics by experiment For the situation of a buried pipeline with loving water, an appropriate ‘tule of thumb is Tm= 21w+7s —__Im=mean material temperature EMTS w=water temperature 3 15 = soil temperature it should be noted that the pressure condition where flow is stopped should also be checked. In this event, Water temperature and outside temperature will equalise. Pipe Jointing & Installation Jointing Methods UPVC Pressure Pipe systems employ one of three jointing methods as described below: Loose Couplers: Plsin ended, chemfered pipe is joined using double socket loose couplers These either corporate ring seals Co re for sotvent weld (chemical) bonding, Jointing using loose couplers has the advantage that the nominal length of pioe supplied is exactly the working length. No meterageis lost in making the joint. 2. Integral solvent weld joint: One spigot end ofa plain ended length of pipe is formed into a bell end This allows the spigot end of the next length of pipe to be inserted forsolvent weld (chemical) bonding Only one joint has to be made peer length 3. Integral Ring seal joint: One spigot of apiain ended length of pipe is formed into a bell end which incorporates 2 seat into which is st a synthetical bbe seal ing, Only one joint has to be made per length. Ring seal jointing is the quickest metad of installation end so consequently as the lowest instalation costs, Solvent Weld Jointing Procedure ‘The pipe should be cut using a tooth panel saw. Make sure that the cut shall be square to the end and chamfered at the outside edoe. 2, Make sure that the frtings / pipes are clean and fiee from moisture. Pipe installation Instructic 1. Alignment and Grade ‘Al pipes should belaid to, and maintzined at requited lines and grades established by the pipe system Design Engineer. Fitting, valves, airvents and hydrants should be installed at the required locations with valve and hydrant stems plumb. 2. Trench Width Trerich Width at the ground surface may vary with end depend upon the depth, type of ils anc the position of the surface structures. The minimum clear width of the trench, measured at the Spring line of the pipe should be 300 mrn (1 ft) greater than the outside ciameter ofthe pipe. The mavimum clear width of the trench atthe top of the pipe should not exceed a width equal to the pipe diameter plus 600 mm (2ft). Ifthe above defined trench widths must be exceeded. or ifthe pipe is installed in a compacted embankment the pipe embediment should be compacted to a point of at least 25 pipe diameters from the pipe on both sides of the pipe oF 10 the trench wall whichever is less. 3. Preparation of the Trench Bottom © The trench bottom should be constructed to provide a firm, stable and uniform support forthe full enath of the pipe. ‘© Dell holes shoulld be provided at each joint to permit proper joint assembly end pipe support. ‘Any part of the trench bottom excavated below grade should be backfiled to gracle and should be compacted as required to provide hrm pipe support. ‘© When an unstable sub-grade condition which will povide inadequate pipe support encountered, additional trench depth should be excavated and refilled with a suitable foundatation material as recommended by the project's Geotechnical Engineer. Ledge rock, boulders and large stones should be removed to provide 100 mm (4")f soll cushion on all sides ofthe pipe and accessories. 4 Laying of Pive Proper implements, tools and equipment should be used for pacement of the pipe in the trench to prevent damage. Under 1 circumstances should the pipe or accessories be dropped into the trench. Allforeign matter or dirt should be removed from the pipe interior Pipe joints should be assembled with care. When pipe laying is notin progress, open ends ofthe installed pipe should be closed to prevent entrance of trench water. dirt and foreign matter into the line Above ground Installation: 1 .Mount Installation: Where a mound is to be made up to accommodate a pipeline above the existing ground level. The mount must fist be made up to 1000 mm above the planned crown oF the pipe and compacted. A trench is then dug and the pipeline laid in the usual manner 2. Exposed Installation: UPVC pipe Is manufactured for great flexibility, this means wren used in exposed applications adequate ‘support must be provided. The pipeline should be as near aspossible to operating temperature when installed. The clamps ‘and support are then affixed to itn its expanded state. These will arrest any contraction when the pipeline cools, but more importantly there will be no signs of sugging when the pipeline s at normal operating temperature. Extra support should be given to accommodate the weight of heavy tings & equipment and also to protect the pipeline from the torque applied ‘when operating valves & hydrant tees The pipe supports should have flat surfaces of half the diameter ofthe pipe or 100 mm ‘minimum width (whichever is the greater) and not be able to damage the pipe if any movement occurs. UPVC pipe isa good inslator ofthe pipe contents and this helps to prevent freezing, additionaly the flexibility of UPVC allows for expansion to accommodate the increased volume of frazen liquids However for operational reasons its usual to insulate Pipelines to minimize the risk of the contents freezing, Care should be taken that insulation Is waterproof or is protected by 2 waterproof cover Provision shauld also be made to enable drain down of pipe runs with drain valves atthe lowest points. Horizontal pipe runs should incorporate a fall to facilitate drainage. UPVC pipelines should be insulated from local intense heat sources such as bollers ‘and steam pipes as this may cause excessive thermal movement ofthe pipe.lnaddition exposed pipelines shouldbe protected from potential impact damage. Polyfab ¢ Thurst Blocking: ‘Thurst Blocking prevents pipe movement when a pressure system is activated and pressurized, ‘ ‘Thurs blocking is requited at all points of change of direction in the pipe line. Most blocking isdone where a fing, valve, or hydrant i installed. There may be times when side blocking 1 2 isnecessaty because of curvature occuring without the use of itings. Usually good compacted backiill will provide the necessary anchor for side thrust. Concrete i blocking is the most commonly recommended method of blocking, Concrete is placed directly on the fitting against the line of thrust. The concrete must also pour against undistrubed earth, The size of the blocking wil vary with the size of pine, working pressure exerted. type of 5 fiting, degree of flow direction change, ard the soll conditions PYC pipe is flexible and may ppulsate under pressure variations This does not harm the pipe or that part which is enclosed. ay in concrete It may cause wear at the interface of the concrete block and the backfill For this reason, pipe and fittings should be wrapped with a one mill or heavier plastic sheeting prior to being embedded in conrete to prevent any possible damage. j f 1. Obviously care hasto be teken to minimize the induced stress on the pipe whilst puling in. Pipe to be installed by this method should be jointed in length not exceeding 300 mrs and the solvent welded joints given a full curing period of 24 hours before commencing laying, Following laying the joining of these sections can be cartied out, with care taken to ensure the pipe has reached ground temperatures Storage ‘The following procedures are recommended to prevent damage to the pipe ‘Store the pipe atthe stein bundles, preferably under shade to avoid direc sunlight. ‘Avoid comaression, deformation or damage to bell ends of the pip> ‘When bundles are stacked, ensure that the weight of upper buridles does not cause deformation to pipe in lower bundles. Support pipe bundles at 24 mt (& F) intervals (1.2 mtr (4 Fd) ftom each end ) on wood blocking to prevent damage to the bottom surfaces during storage. ‘tore lubricant in tiohtly sealed containers under cover. ‘Do not sore pipeffttings where gaskets may be exposed to ozone, UV radiation or contamination (Le. grease o,ete) Protect the interior and sealing surfaces of pioe & tings from dit & foreign materi ‘When the bundles are stacked, ensure that the stack remains stable. When pioe/fittings are being stored for a prolonged period, the bundles sholud be covered with a translucent cover, 10 protect against exposure to direct sunlight. Handling The following procedures are recommended: 1. When using mechanical equipmet, exercise care to prevent damage to the pipesifittings. 2. Lower pipes / fittings carefully from trucks and into trenched, Do not drop pipes / fittings. Dropped pipe / fittings can be damaged and should not be used. 3. When distributing the pipe along a trench (Stringing), place pipe on the opposite side ofthe trench from the excavated earth. Place pipe with bell ends n the dection of the work progress.
