It has been proven that plastic pipes are the ideal products for today’s extensive continuum of commercial, residential and industrial sector applications for withstanding resistance to a wide range of chemicals, heat and pressure. Unplasticized polyvinyl chloride or UPVC is one of the most widely used thermoplastic materials, due to its flexibility of usage and competitive price. It is manufactured by the petrochemical industry who produce dichlo- ride from ethane and chloride and apply pyrolisis above 400°C to cause splitting into vinyl chloride and hydro- chloric acid. ‘The basic polymer is mixed with additives such as colour, filler, lubricants and stabilizers in accordance with a recipe determined by the properties of the finished product. The mix of compound is transported to either extruders or injection molding machines to be converted into the end product. UPVC pipes and fittings will not deteriorate under attack from bacteria or other micro organism and will not provide food source to micro/macro organisms and fungi. These pipes and fittings are also suitable for chemical industries as they have chemical resistance to most acids and alkalies. UPVC, being thermoplastic materials are prone to variance in physical properties based to variation in temperature. It is important to take into account the application of end use and temperature conditions when selecting class and rates of pipes (wall thickness of pipe) Sal features of UPVC pipes 1. Non-corrosive: UPVC pipes are not attacked by acids, alkalis, oil and salts etc, because UPVC material is. chemically inert. 2. Insulator; UPVC is an excellent insulator and is used as an insulation on electrical wires &cables and as duets for electrical and communication cables 3. Mechanical strength: UPVC pipes wil not dent or flatten under pressure because of high tensile & impact strengt 4, LowThermal Conductivity: UPVC has low co-efficient of thermal conductivity & because of this there is no heat loss or gained 5. Fire Proot: UPVC pipes wil not support combustion an inthe event offre, flames are unable to spread along 6. Flow efficiency; UPVC pipes have smooth & glossy surface whioch discourage the formation of scale and jeposits. 7. Light Weight: UPVC pipes are of less weight compared to cast iron, asbestos & cement pipes. This reduces manpower & installation operation cost 8. Sanitary: UPVC pipes are completely non-toxic & does not affect the taste, smell or colour of the liquid nor reacts with any liquid to cause a precipttant. 9. Cost: UPVC is one of the least expensive materials used in manufacturing of pipes and fittings. 10. Acuosticity: UPVC pipes are good acousticity compare to other pipes 11, CO2 Features: Environment friendly. 12, Weathering Effect: UPVC pipes are good weathering effect and UV resistance 2 3. = Polyfab @ ails gis4 Plastic Industry LLC Application of UPVC Pipes 1. Soil & Waste Discharge System System Water Network System Drainage Waste: UPVC pipes are useful for waste lines of corrosive chemicals. Above ground and underground non-pressure drainage/sewerage application 5. Ventilation: UPVC Pipes are suitable for ventilation for buildings & factories. These either incorporate ring seals ‘or are for solvent weld (chemical) boding. Joining using loose couplers has the advantages thatthe nominal length of pipe supplied is exactly the working length. No meterage is lost in making the jit. Integral Solvent Weld Joint: One spigot end of a plain ended length of pipe is formed in to a bell end. This allows the ‘spigot end ofthe next length of pipe to be inserted for solvent weld (Chemical) bonding, Only one joint has to be made per length, Integral Ring Seal Joint: One spigot of a piain ended length of pipe is formed into a bell end which incorporates a seat into which is sot a synthetcal rubber seal ring. Only one joint has to be made per length. Ring Seal Jointing is the Quickest ‘metod of installation and so consequently has rhe lowest installation costs. Solvent Weld Jointing Procedure 1 ‘The pipe should be cut using a tooth panel sawMake sure that the cut shall be square to the end and Chamtered at the ‘outside edge. Make sure that the fitings / Pipes are cleas and free from moisture. Mark the spigot with a pencil or felt pen line at a distance equivalent to the depth of the socket. Using the correct UPVC Solvent Cement, apply an even but not excessive coating tothe internal surface of the socket and a more generous coat to the marked pipe end. Where the cement dries before Completion (on Large Diameter Pipes or in hot and windy conditions) cover the spigot with a second coat. Push the pipe home and hold firmly for 30 seconds. Romove all excess solvent cement as quickly as possible to prevent unwanted chemical on exposed joints. The Joins should not be disturbed or strained for 5 minutes after Jointing and 24 Hours must be allowed before pressure testing 8 Cut pipe end square. 9. care should be takento 2 Ci chamfertoa minimum of * Keep bomninatng es 18% deburr and smooth Surfaces el Sotvent weld Comers 5 Joint pipes, using pipe jack necessary ina single uid movement keep both mating Rubber Seal Jointing Procedure 1 Clean the Gasket area. Remove Sand, Dir, Grease and Debris, Do Not Remove Gasket from Bell Removals this could cause Improper Installation. Check the Gasket. Make sure itis seated uniformly in the groove by running your finger around the innner edge of the Gasket. Clean the Spigot. Use a Rag to Wipe the Spigot Clean. Lower the pipe into the Trench carefully, to avoid getting drt into the bell or spigot. Lubricate. Apply Lubricant onl to the level of the spigot end approximately mid-way back to the stop Line, Assemble pipe. Insert the spigot end into the bell until it connects the gasket uniformly. Straight alignment is essential for ease of assembly. Apply Steady Pressure by hand or by mechanical means until the spigot slips through the Gasket. Insert Pipe Until the stop line is flush with the bell end. This may however mean that the bore ofthe other pipe materials is reduced down to that of the UPVC. 1 Standard Stub and Adaptor Rng: This enables pipes of similar bores to be connected with no disruption to flow and theretore minimal risk of blockage occuring. 2. dointing Bote Flange Adaptors: The Following Points have to be observed when jointing pipes using flange adaptors: ‘Ensure Mating Surface is Clean & Free trom Damage Use a Single rubber gasket of the Correct Size I [ ‘Adlon Jointing Compound should not be used ‘Assemble flange jints before ary ther joins on the pipeline Mating surfaces must be aligned within 5 mm prior ooking Use only undamaged bots, rus and wast of he comect size I I Ensure the Gasket is Properly Aligned Prior to Sting Pipe Installation Instructions 1. Alignment and Grade {Al pipes should be laid and maintained at required lines and grades established by the pipe system Design Engineer. Fitings, Valves, Air ents and Hyerants should be installed atthe required locations with valve and Hydrant stems plum 2. Trench Width ‘Trench width at the ground surface may vary with and depend upon the depth, type of soils, and the position of the surface structures. The minimum clear width of the trench, Measured at the spring line of the pipe should be 300 mm (1ft) greater than the outside diameter of the pipe ‘The Maximum clear width of the trench ath the top of the pipe should not exceed a width equal to the pipe diameter plus {600 mm (2h) ifthe above defined trench width must be exceeded, o it the pipe is installed in a compacted embankment, the pipe embedment should be compacted to a point of at least 2.5 pipe diameters from the pipe on both sides of the pipe or to the trench wall, whichever is less. 3. Preparation of the Trench Bottom. 1. The trench bottom should be constructed to provide a firm, stable and uniform support for the full length of the pipe. 2. Bell Holes should be provided at each joint to permit proper joint assembly and pipe suppor. ‘Any part of the trench bottom excavated below grade should be backfilled to grade and should be compacted as required to provide firm pipe support. 3, When an unstable sub-grade condition which will provide inadequate pipe support is encountered, additional trench depth should be excavated and refilled with a suitable foundation material as recommended by the project's Geotechnical Engineer. Ledge Rock, Boulders and large stones should be removed to provide 100 mm (4") of soil cushion (on al sides of the pipe and accessories. 4. Laying of Pipe Proper implements, tools and equipments should be used for placement of the pipe in the trench to prevent damage. Under no Circumstances should the pipe or accessories be dropped into the trench. All foreign matter or dirt should be removed ‘rom the pipe interior. Pipe Joints should be assembied with care. When pipe laying is notin progress, open ends of the installed pipe should be closed to prevent entrance of trench water, dit and foreign matter into the line. Polyfab @ ail gis4 Plastic Industry LLC ees AhtullUl eel) Above Ground Installation: 1. Mound Installation: Where a mound us to be made up to accommodate a pipeline above the existing Ground Level. The mound must first be made up to 1000 mm above the planned crown of the pipe and compacted. A trench is then dug and the pipeline is laid in the usual manner. 2. Exposed Installation UPVC pipe is manufactured for great flexibility, this means when used in exposed applications, adequate support must be provided. The pipeline should be as near as possible to operating temperature installed. The clamps and support are then affixed to it in its expanded state. These will arrest any contraction when the pipeline cools, but more importantly there will be no signs of sagging when the pipeline is at normal operating temperature. Extra Support Should be given to accommodate the ‘weight of heavy fittings & equipment and also to protect thhe pipeline from the torque applied when operationg valves & hydrant tees. The pipe supports should have flat surfaces of half the diameter of the pipe or 100 mm minumum width (whichever is the greater ) ‘and not be able to damage the pipe if any movement occurs. UPVC Pipe is a good insulator of the pipe contents and this helps to prevent freezing, additionaly the flexibility of UPVC allows for expansion to accommodate the increased volume of frozen liquids. However for operational reason itis normal practise to insulate pipelines to minimize the risk ofthe contents freezing. Care should be taken that insulation is waterproof or is protected by a waterproof cover. Provision should also be made to enable drain down of pipe runs with drain valves atthe lowest points. Horizontal pipe runs should incorporate a fall to facilitate drainage. UPVC Pipelines should be insulated from local intense heat sources such as boilers and steam pipes, as this may cause excessive thermal movement of the pipe. In addition, exposed pipelines should be protected from potential impact damages. Thrust Blocking) ‘Thrust Blocking Prevents pioe movement when a pressure system is activated and pressur oy ized. Thurst blocking is required at all points of change of Direction. in the pipe line. Most blocking is done where a fiting, valve, or hydrant is installed. There may be times when side 1 2 blocking is necessary because of curvature occuring without the use of fittings. Usually good compacted backfill wll provide the necessary anchor for sido thurst.Con- crete blocking is the most commonly recommended method of blocking. Concrete is placed directly on the fitting against the line of thrust. The concrete must also pour against undisturbed earth. ‘The size of the blocking will vary with the size of pipe, working pressure exerted, type of 5 fitting, degree of flow direction change, and the soil conditions. PVC Pipe is flexible and may pulsate under pressure varations. This does not harm the pipe or that part which is enclosed in concrete, It may cause wear & tear at the interface of the concrete block and the backfll For this reason, pipe and ftins should be wrapped with a one mill or heavier plastic sheeting prior to being embedded in concrete to prevent any possible damage. | t 1. Vertical Direction Change (Bend Anchor) Trenchless Laying: ‘Trenchless laying of UPVC pipe has been carried out extensively and has proved successful upto 90 mm/s" diameter, solvent welded pipe only. UPVC pipe has proved suitable for mole plough and cut and feed installation techniques. Obviously care has to taken to ‘minimize the induced stress on the pipe while pulling in. Pipe to be installed by this method should be jointed in length not exceeding 300 mtrs and the solvent welded joints should be given a full curing period of 24 hours before commencing laying. Following laying, the joining of these sections can be carried out with care taken to ensure the pipe has reached ground temperature. Poly os Plastic Industry LLC es ssa aelied Store the pipe at the site in bundles, preferably under shade to avoid direct sunlight. ‘Avoid Compression, deformation or damage to bell ends of the pipe. When bundles are stacked, ensure that the weight of upper bundles does not cause deformation to pipes in lower bundles. ‘Support Pipe Bundles at 2.4 mtr (8 Ft) intervals (1.2 mtr (4Ft) from each end ) on wood blocking to prevent damage to the bottom surfaces during storage. Store lubricant in tightly sealed containers under cover. Do not store Pipes/Fittings where gaskets may be exposed to ozone, UV radiation or contamination (i.e. grease, oll, etc.) Protect the interior and sealing surfaces of Pipes & Fitings from dirt & foreign material. When the bundles are stacked, ensure that the stack remains stable. When Pipes/Fittings are being stored for a prolonged period, the bundles should be covered with a translucent cover, to protect against exposure to direct sunlight. When using mechanical equipment, exercise care to prevent damage to the Pipes/Fittings. Lower Pipes / Fittings carefully from trucks and into trenched. Do not drop Pipes / Fittings. Dropped Pipes / Fittings can be ‘damaged and should not be used. When distributing the pipe along a trench (stringing), place pipe on the opposite side of the trench from the excavated ‘earth. Place pipe with bell ends in the direction of the work progress.
