Text/Materials: Prentice Hall, Big Green Textbook; Perspectives in Multicultural Literature, Purple Softcover Book Selections as assigned (you will be asked to buy certain inexpensive books) 8.5x11 College Ruled Lined Paper, 1 Pack per month (about $1) Blue or Black pens, 1 Pack per month (about $1) Plastic Envelope Letter Size or Accordion Folder ($.50 to $7) Course Description My goal in this class is to equip you with the skills and habits in English that you will need in order to compete effectively with other 10th graders next year and beyond. I also want to emphasize values that are key to not only being academically or financially successful, but also being happy with ones self and whom others feel good to be around. That is very important, too! Skills: Writing, Speaking & Listening, Reading Values: Caring for others, Respect, Collaboration, Leadership, Self-Discipline, SelfTeaching, Curiosity At the end of this year, you will know how to: Write a balanced, logical, academic-level essay Read for details, themes, and tone Ask important, under-the-surface questions when reading and/or listening Predict definitions, conflicts, and attitudes as your read and/or listen Speak publicly, and persuasively Find out how when you dont know how Assessment Criteria & Scoring: Your grade will be derived from a variety of assessed sources. These will include, but are not limited to: 40% Tests/Quizzes (knowledge-based from reading selections assigned) 10% Homework (Short Constructed Responses, Organizers, Notes, Journals) 40% Projects (Presentations, Essays, Digital Projects) 10% Performance (Speaking in class, Discussions, Online Presence, Identity Development) Failed assignments will be counted as 50%. Missing assignments will counted as 0%. Classroom Policies: Weekly assignment charts will be posted every week on website. Class calendar on website will reflect due dates Grades will be posted every 5 weeks, as well as parent letters. Detention 5: No food allowed (sorry, it gets really messy and people turn sharing into a distraction) Detention 5: No electronic devices, please. Its hard to teach when people are playing games or texting. Detention 5: Disruptive behavior. Please try to avoid having this become a problem for us. Detention will be served after school only, in room 40. Doubles if missed. If missed twice, a parent conference will be called. You will receive one bathroom pass every 10 weeks, except for emergencies. Emergencies will require a phone call home. Additional Information: If you miss an assignment, its your responsibility to get it from somebody. You may not ask me for missed work during class. You may come after school to ask me.
