Summary of the Aug. 7 Meeting, St. Pete Museum of History


President Mike Ettinger, called the meeting together at 11:20, at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Present were Joe Rubin, Judy Van Hart,Warren Brown, Bill Buston, Mary Fletcher, Donna Sheehy, Chris Fiore, , Ron Streicher, Bill Barnes, Roger Hansen, and Hank Grogan. Gerry Madis arrived later. and out to the boat world for a search. Hall of Fame: Still voting for inductees and the Luncheon will be January 2, 2011 at the Lakeland Museum. Flight 2014 Stamp-David McLay was handling this thru Tony Jannus Society but Chris suggested we go through local stamp collectors and then go up through national collectors to get them involved in this 2014 event. Chris to pursue this with David when he returns midAugust from England. Chris will call Ernie Sanborne about a tie-in with FAHS and Sun n Fun events with Lakeland schools. Bill Buston reported that the Young Eagles Saturday flying event will be in September at Albert Whitted. Chris would like to have an Aviation Event at the St. Petersburg Museum with Nicole in the Spring of 2011. Connie Kone, the director of the Museum has asked FAHS for help in planning events at the St. Petersburg Museum that will get more people into the museum. This Spring event would have Nichole presenting the items that went into space to FAHS. It would be a day open to everyone. Gerry Madis spoke on aviation news, bringing papers from MacDill. He did state that the Beach King Air is being adapted for the USAF. It was announced that there will be a Facilities Meeting, Thursday, August 12th at the Museum, 4 PM. FAHS member and officers are urged to attend. Subject of the Pier and Flight 1 wall might be brought up. Date for the September meeting was set for September 4, at the St. Petersburg Museum, 11 AM after the AWAPS breakfast at the Albert Whitted Terminal Hangar Restaurant. No further business, meeting was adjourned at 1 PM Mary Fletcher, Secretary, Florida Aviation Historical Society. Hawker Hurricane from David McLains visit to England.

First order of business was to distribute the official FAHS shirts to the officers and board. These blue shirts are to be worn to meetings and events representing FAHS and Flight 2014. Reports: Warren Brown, Treasurer-were solvent Chris Fiore and Bill Buston reported a pennant from the first flight of the Benoist and other articles was sent to Nicole Stott for her flight into space in November. President Mike Ettinger reported that the meeting with St. Pete Mayor Foster went well. Bill Buston and Warren Brown were also present. The Mayor supports Flight 2014 but FAHS needs to get the committee organized and he will appoint 2 people to attend our meetings. Bill Barnes talked to Bob Walker about the display model of the Benoistthe fuel tanks are made. Bob expects to be back in St. Pete September 1st. Ron Streicher asked what the status was of the replica Kermit Weeks was going to build. Chris replied that he was still looking for a Roberts 6 cylinder engine. Chris has sent information to Oshkosh

The Facilities Committee met August 12 at the St. Petersburg Museum. Present from FAHS were Mike Ettinger, Chris Fiore, Bill Buston and Mary Fletcherr. It was voted to place the AIAA Historic plaque in the round circle at the St. Petersburg Museum.

Andy Hayes of Hayes/Cumming Architects presented this Jannus Monument Concept that would need a major fund raiser of $60,000 to $80,000. It shows concrete wall with the AIAA Historic Plaque, steel pole with Benoist wings above and a bronze statue of Tony Jannus.

Mark Your Calendar October 29, 9am St. Petersburg Museum AIAA presentation of a plaque designating St. Petersburg Central Yacht Basin a Historic Aerospace Site.
