Get Involved - How to Make your World Education Games Count!

The team at the World Education Games are doing their best to help children around the world have access to quality learning. UNICEF share a similar commitment. As well as being a part of this years exciting event, we encourage you to learn more about UNICEFs education programs and raise money for UNICEF and your school. UNICEF believes that educating children is the best investment we can make in their future and that every child deserves an education.

How Does It Work?

1. Register Your School

Visit www.worldmathsday.com or www.worldspellingday.com and register your school as participating in the World Education Games. Once registered on one of these sites, you will receive teacher sign in details where you can create additional teacher and student sign in details to use during the practice and competition periods. Students can keep track of their pledges within their online Student Centres, and we will show the amount of money pledged across the world on all event websites so that all participants can see how much their community can achieve for UNICEF and all schools participating. Teachers can set a target amount for their school to raise, and within their Teacher Centre keep track of all funds pledged to their students. We suggest that one teacher is nominated as the point of coordination for collection of all funds.

2. Participate and Collect

Students are asked to find willing supporters to donate a nominated amount to your school in recognition of their participation in the events we are holding - World Maths Day, World Spelling Day or both.

Schools For Africa

We need your help to ensure that millions of children in Africa have an education and a better future." - Nelson Mandela
UNICEFs Schools for Africa Campaign was initiated in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Hamburg Society, focussing on helping children to have access to a safe and protective environment where they can learn and play. The campaign is currently active in 11 countries in Africa to create conditions that will attract children to school and keep them there. They are focused on helping the most disadvantaged - orphans, children living in extreme poverty and girls. Scalability and sustainability are key elements, working with villagers to build local schools themselves and take over responsibility for their maintenance and keeping them running.

Mozambique
UNICEF has been making a difference to the lives of children in Mozambique for almost four decades despite significant obstructions such as war, poverty, recurrent natural disasters and the surge of HIV/AIDS. Many children are missing out on primary education. Two thirds of primary-school-age children leave before having completed fifth grade.

UNICEF and the Children of Viet Nam

Children of educated mothers are 50% more likely to survive until the age of five than those whose mothers did not have the chance to go to school - Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan, UNICEFs eminent Advocate for Children
Viet Nam has made impressive strides towards ensuring that all of its children are able to realise the right to an education yet still, despite substantial progresses made in the education sector overall there are a number of challenges. These are detailed below.

Ethnic Minority Education

Identified Issues: ~ 54 ethnic groups, many ethnic minority young children cant understand teacher instructions due to language differences ~ Enrolment rate for ethnic minority children is far lower than the national average ~ Drop out is high, 50-70% in comparison to the national rate of 7% ~ Children fail to learn to read and write in mother tongue, are unlikely to learn Vietnamese and, will have limited chances to participate in the countrys economy and succeed in society.

UNICEF Actions:
Implement mother tongue based bilingual education programmes. Recruit and train teachers from ethnic minority groups. Develop teaching and learning materials to support bilingual learning environments. Engage parents, community and local authority in activities that promote childrens bilingual education.

Care for Young Children

Identified Issues: ~ Many children under 3 are cared for at home by older siblings, without parental supervision ~ Low levels of parental education and early learning standards ~ Poor quality of institutional care for children aged 3-5.

UNICEF Actions:
A national preschool curriculum implementing child centred and active learning principles. Training teachers, care givers and managers in early childhood learning. Application of early learning and development standards to assess young child development and improve quality of institutional care.

School Enrolment and Dropouts

Page 7

Indentified Issues: ~ Low enrolment rates and drop out rates of girls, ethnic minorities, children with disability, migrants and children affected by HIV/AIDS ~ Lack of young peoples issues included in curriculum including reproductive health and HIV/AIDS ~ Poor teaching methods, lecture based learning style ~ HIV/AIDS interventions are uncoordinated and do not address stigma and discrimination ~ Little focus on preparing students to cope with the reality of children being infected and affected by the HIV epidemic while safeguarding their right to education.

UNICEF Actions:
Develop school curriculum to mainstream sexual and reproductive health (SRH) HIV, life skills and climate change. Teacher training in SRH and HIV education. Support the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) to ensure planning and budgeting to address HIV in its plans. Develop creative learning and advocacy materials to address HIV-related stigma and discrimination.

UNICEF/NYHQ2009-0234/Josh Estey

Quality of Primary Education

Identified Issues: ~ Lack of well-trained teachers, lack of textbooks that are gender sensitive and designed to promote active learning ~ Lack of well-designed school facilities that promote students academic achievement as well as their physical, psychological, social and emotional growth ~ Lack of parental and community involvement in childrens learning, school management and activities at school.

UNICEF Actions:
Promoting participation and support for school improvements Development of innovative teaching and learning materials that are gender sensitive and promote childrens active learning. Promoting access to quality education for ethnic minorities, girls, children with disabilities, children affected by HIV/AIDS and children affected by natural disasters and emergencies. Supporting life skills in basic education through teacher training and the development of supporting materials. As UNICEF is not funded by the UN, we rely on the voluntary donations of individuals, organisations and partners like the World Education Games to help us reach our goals and deliver a world where every child has an education.

Ideas and Activities

The World Education Games this year has 2 events that students can participate in along with raising money: World Maths Day and World Spelling Day. These events are designed to encourage and motivate students to enjoy and excel in their academic studies in a safe online environment. Prizes are awarded to students with top speed and accuracy in each event, with the 2010 World Maths Day event achieving a Guinness World Record for Largest Online Maths Competition. In addition to these events, here are some ideas and activities you may wish to use to encourage and inspire your students to participate, collect donations and explore the work and achievements UNICEF completes across the world each year.

Challenge all students to achieve their Platinum Certificates!

To attain a Platinum Certificate, students must complete 60 games during World Maths Day or World Spelling Day. Encourage students to earn both certificates!

Run an inter-class or inter-house competition

Points earnt from World Maths Day or World Spelling Day could go towards the end of year house championship. Each cent raised for UNICEF could also be counted as points for the competition.

Set up a challenge with neighbouring schools

Compare: student high scores, number of points, average points per student, total funds raised.

Explore the work of UNICEF and their goals

Discuss the importance of education, access to health care, access to clean water, health issues, the impact of war on children. Visit unicef.org to find out more about UNICEFs work.

Maintain leader boards for the fastest and most accurate challengers
Keep track of student scores during World Maths Day or World Spelling Day.

Run teacher versus student challenges

Set up computers in the school hall for class challenges, award prizes for school champions.

Organise an overnight camp to celebrate the World Education Games

Set up computers for students to compete during the events, have students dress up like their avatars, keep track of all the countries students challenge using a map. Remember! Each event runs for 48 hours covering anywhere it is 1 March for World Maths Day or 3 March for World Spelling Day.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

On Tuesday 1 March and Thursday 3 March students will participate in World Maths Day and World Spelling Day, online competitions for maths and spelling. In previous years, the organisers of World Maths Day have encouraged and donated to UNICEF supporting their work in removing boundaries for all students to have access to an education by providing classrooms, school equipment and learning materials, trained teachers and improved water and sanitation facilities.

As part of the event, this year all students are asked to find willing supporters to donate to our school and UNICEF in honour of their participation in each event. 50% of funds raised will be donated to UNICEF, and 50% of funds will go towards improving our school facilities. Donated funds are to be collected and brought to the school office along with the pledge form. All money is due by 11 March 2011.

There is no set amount expected from each child. These events are designed to encourage and motivate students to learn and contribute to their community. They allow students to have an enjoyable, safe online experience and raise money for their school and UNICEF.

We appreciate your support for these events, and hope that you continue to support our school and UNICEF.

Good Luck!
