Safety Standards

Testing and Materials (ASTM) International Standards for MRI Device Marking. These new standards are aimed at eliminating the confusion of the Food and
Drug Administration’s (FDA) previous terms “MR Safe” and “MR Compatible.” When you see an item marked with one of the icons shown below in our
catalogue, it is your guarantee that the appropriate testing has been done and the results of those tests are available to you!
There are now three terms applicable to MRI Device Marking for safety:

MR SAFE as defined by the ASTM International document is applied to an item

that poses no known hazards in all MR environments. MR SAFE items would
include nonconducting, nonmagnetic items such as a plastic Petri dish. The
document further states that an item may be determined to be MR SAFE by
providing a scientifically based rationale rather than test data. Unlike the previous
FDA’s definition of MR Safe, the new MR SAFE may only be applied if the item
is 100% safe, without exception, regardless of MR system field strength or any
environmental or extenuating circumstances. The universal icon to be used for all
MR SAFE products is a green square with white capital letters “MR”, or, a white
square with green border and green capital letters “MR”. Items marked with the
green MR SAFE icon may be taken into, used, or placed anywhere within any MR
environment without risk or potential harm.

MR CONDITIONAL is defined by the ASTM International as an item that has been

demonstrated to pose no known hazards in a specified MR environment with
specified conditions of use. Conditions that may be used to define the specified
MR environment include field strength, spatial gradient, RF fields, specific
absorption rate (SAR) as well as the potential for additional conditions such as
operational conditions for a device. The MR CONDITIONAL label is used to alert
the user that there are certain limitations to the usability of the item, or the testing
that was performed. As an example, an item may have been tested for a 1.5-Tesla
system, but not a 3-Tesla. Items bearing the MR CONDITIONAL icon should
include additional information on the label, as to what the conditionality of use is,
such as a gauss-line restriction or SAR level limitation. The icon designated for
MR CONDITIONAL marking is a yellow equilateral triangle with a black border and
black capital letters “MR” inside.

MR UNSAFE as defined by the ASTM International is any item that is a known

threat or poses a hazard in all MR environments. An example of an MR UNSAFE
item would be a pair of ferromagnetic scissors, or any item constructed of ferrous
metals. The MR UNSAFE icon consists of a white circle with red border and
diagonal strike through and the capital black letters “MR” inside.

If a safety icon isn’t shown does

that mean it can’t be used for MRI?
No, It may still be designated as “MRI Compatible” according
to the old standard. The lack of an icon simply means that the
manufacturer has yet to re-test their products according to the

The finished product exceeds the attenuation levels required by the
major equipment manufacturers. Our designs are regularly revised and
updated as new scanners are introduced. The standard thickness of the
walls and ceilings is approximately 50mm, excluding any internal finishes.
Floor thickness, excluding the final covering but including the 4mm base
insulation membrane, is approximately 27mm.
The floor can also be strengthened to meet the load bearing
requirements of any size magnet and incorporate under floor cable
ducts. The framework will also support alternative galvanised steel lining
which will provide a degree of magnetic shielding required for some
magnets.

The internal surfaces of the frame are lined with aluminium sheet, locked
into the threaded groove in the extrusion with a face fixed extruded
aluminium cover strip. This unique system gives a double overlap of the
material at each panel joint for the maximum level of performance. Using
a construction, formed from one rigid material eliminates any problems of
structural stressing and flexing through building movement or varying co-
efficients of expansion. It also eliminates the inherent weakness of timber
framework, thinner shielding materials and the problems associated with
some clamping systems.

Why Choose a
Modular Aluminium Solution?
Aluminium has a proven record on a world wide basis for high
specification RF facilities used by leading telecommunication companies
in sensitive military installations. It is the preferred material for many of
the mobile MRI Units now in regular use and subject to the rigours of
transportation from site to site.
The specification required to meet the necessary conductivity properties
and attenuation levels provides strength, which is put to advantage in
the overall room construction. Subject to reasonable site conditions,
consistent with all installations, the system ensures that there is no
likelihood of degradation, confirmed by over 100 sites completed in the
last 12 years.
As with other shielding materials, such as copper, in adverse conditions
there is a possibility of oxidisation. To simulate these conditions, samples
of our cage construction were submitted for independent testing in a
humidity chamber (98% Rh at 38°C). Results showed neither detectable
signs of corrosion nor increase in resistance at the joints.

RF Testing
Aware of the advances in technology Wardray Premise have, in
conjunction with leading EMC analysts, developed their own in-
house testing facility. Using highly sophisticated RF test equipment,
our construction methods have been refined to obtain attenuation
levels at the wide range of frequencies now specified by the leading
equipment manufacturers. These levels are far in excess of their current
requirements which leave us well equipped to produce rooms for higher
powered magnets.
In addition to conducting RF tests for our own cages we are always
pleased to carry out independent tests on other sites and in mobile units.
Tests are conducted in accordance with IEEE 299-2006. Further
developments in the testing standards are being investigated which will
be introduced when appropriate. Latest information can be obtained
from our Technical Staff.

Room Fit Out

We will work in close co-operation with site contractors involved in the
installation of air conditioning, power, lighting and internal finishes or as
