THE NORTHERN MINDANAO INTEGRATED AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH CENTER

Introduction
Our proIessor in HORT 313 (Vegetable Crops Production and Management) Dr. Demetrio V. Oria
brought us to a two-day educational Iield trip on NOMIARC (Northern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural
Research Center) Dalwangan, Malaybalay City last September 5-6, 2011 together with his undergraduate
students.
We leave USM at exactly 7:30 am on September 05, 2011. We had our lunch at Malaybalay City and at
exactly 1:00pm we reached our destination.the NOMIARC! It is a very nice place; a place oI relaxation, the
weather is cool.
NOMIARC is located along the Iootzones oI Mt. Kitanglad, some 818 meters above sea level in
Dalwangan, Malaybalay City. It occupies an area oI 68 hectares; part oI the 601.28 hectares oI Malaybalay
Stock Farm acquired thru Proclamation No. 637 Reservation 329 Decree # 5348 dated November 23, 1933. As
the research arm oI the Department oI Agriculture, the center plays an integral role in the generation oI
technologies on crops, livestock and integrated Iarming system.

The center is also tasked to conduct basic Iunctions oI research germplasm collection and maintenance,
production and distribution oI high quality seeds and planting materials and training/technical assistance Ior the
dynamic agricultural sector in the region. NOMIARC is also known Ior its tangible accomplishment in potato
research and development that paved the way to naming NOMIARC as the White Potato Center in Mindanao.

NOMIARC recently marked its debut in conducting the yearly Farmers` Field Day and Technology
Forum, bearing this year`s theme 'Staple Food Substitutes: Key to Food Security. The three-day event which
has drawn more than a thousand participants, consisting oI Iarmers, cooperatives and associations, government
agencies, provincial and municipal local government units, state colleges and universities, seed and Iertilizer
companies and other esteemed guests within and other neighboring regions witnessed Iirst-hand Iarm
technologies and researches through guided Iield tours to demonstration plot areas/clusters which allow them to
discern which oI the available technologies would be best adopted in their respective Iarmlands.

This year, the station has Ieatured around 53 technologies on rice, corn, vegetables, root crops, sweet
sorghum, white potato, coIIee, organic crop production, alternative bioIuel plant sources, among others which
are primarily aimed to increase productivity and income oI Iarmers.

To date, DA-NOMIARC has taken recent initiatives in reducing dependency and imports on rice
through mainstreaming adlai by producing the crop right in the station`s Iields, in which generated seeds would
be given to interested Iarm growers. According to Raquel Oclarit-Salingay, research and extension (R&E)
coordinator oI MASIPAG Mindanao, there are two species oI adlai Coix lacryma-fobi var. lacryma-fobi and
Coix lacryma-fobi var. ma-yuen.

The variety lacryma-fobi is the one being utilized as beads and is usually Iound in swampy areas. The
variety ma-yuen, on the other hand, is the one harvested as a cereal Iood.
I am quite Iascinated with this grass. I never knew its name before. The Iruits look like a mini shell
with colors brown, black and usually grey. Every hard grain has a hole Ior inserting a thin piece oI nylon string.
We collect it Ior the purpose oI making bracelets and necklaces. The plant looks like a miniature version oI
corn. I usually see it near watery areas like rice Iield and near rivers. We regarded it as weed until I see it in.
NOMIARC. The Ieatured image is very similar to what we regarded as weed.
