Hearts Wide Open
The original text that I wrote about previous to this project was an anonymous postcard
Irom postsecret.com. The author oI the postcard Iocused primarily on their one-sided opinion
towards love. They claimed, 'I say that I don`t believe in love, but that is only because I am
scared I will never Iind it. That quote is overlapping the V- J Day photograph, which is
technically contradicting his/her view point. The problems that were underlying are that they
clearly are not open to love, and let themselves allow people in. The wording should be
changed, due to the Iact that everyone Ieels love in some way, shape, or Iorm. Changing the
wording to a more optimistic opinion is crucial. This is so important to recreate because people
need to know that no matter what, love is possible to Iind, and nothing is wrong with letting
yourselI be open to letting people into your liIe. That is why I transIormed the postsecret
postcard into a beautiIul, sparkling, lovey-dovey valentine. Valentines are a true symbol oI love
and aIIection.
The recreation oI the previous genre is a valentine. Choosing to create a lovey-dovey
valentine contradicts the original genre, thus, creating an optimistic outlook regarding love,
loneliness, and aIIection. Knowing this would be a creative, Iun, and craIty genre I knew I could
deIinitely convey the deIense behind it while having a little bit oI Iun with the recreation aspect.
The valentine completely connects to the postsecret postcard. Love is the main Iocus Ior both
the valentine, and the postcard; although, contrasting viewpoints were expressed. The V- J Day
photograph is used in both genres. Also that the anonymousness oI the postcard is shown in the

valentine. This genre clearly connects to the previous text by expressing love and how vital it is
to have in liIe, shown in a diIIerent way. Mainly the valentine is a persuasive genre towards the
negative postcard. The valentine connects to the message oI my text in a clear and creative
manor.
This valentine holds a plethora oI attributes as the new genre. Viewers most likely expect
that the new genre to be about love, romance, and passion. Other expectations would probably
be that a girl made it, due to the sparkles, hearts, gemstones, and the V- J Day photograph on the
Iront oI the heart-shaped valentine. Other potential thoughts would that this is going generated
Ior and Irom a speciIic person. What they would not expect is that it was a recreation Irom the
postcard, due to the positive message on the valentine and the negative connotation on the
postcard. Also the viewer would not expect that the 'to and 'Irom being leIt blank. The
viewer may also not expect that the valentine is not primarily representing Valentine`s Day; it is
representing primarily love. The only alterations made Irom the original text were the wording
that was overlapping the V- J Day photograph on the postcard. 'I say that I don`t believe in love,
but that is only because I am scared I will never Iind it, which was on the prior text transIormed
to 'I never thought I would Iind love until I met you. I love you. This was improved to
promote a much more positive appearance towards love and what a valentine symbolizes.
The purpose oI the genre recreation is to show the audience that everyone Ieels love, and
it will happen iI you open yourselI to him/her. The audience is speciIically people that do not
believe in love, or don`t think they would ever Iind it; Ior example, the postsecret postcard
author. The audience is not geared towards a speciIic gender, ethnicity, or anything really Ior
that matter. This genre recreation is not meant to necessarily be persuasive, but to have the

audience rethink their opinions on love and how important it is to open their heart to others in
order to let their loved ones in.
Every microscopic detail that is on the valentine highlights the messages and ideas that
are to be presented. The shape oI the valentine is a heart, clearly because it is the core and
symbol oI love. Mainly the color representation is pink, red, and white. These colors are
generally the colors Ior Valentine`s Day. Also these colors are bright and happy, the way love
should be. X`s and O`s are used to signiIy hugs, and kisses. Kissing and hugging is simply a
true Iorm oI aIIection that embodies so many emotions such as: happiness, comIort, aIIection,
relieI, love, and compassion. The anonymous 'to and 'Irom is portrayed Irom the postsecret
postcard. This also entitles a bit oI mystery, which love is. Silver sparkles are a vital aspect oI
the message that the valentine represents. Being in a heart-shape around the V- J Day picture
emphasizes that the photograph. Also that the sparkles represent happiness, beauty, and magic.
These are emotions that should be Ielt by everyone around the world. The Iact that the valentine
is rather large portrays to the recipient that they are loved a lot and are oI great importance to the
person whom created it Ior them. Used in the original text, the V- J Day picture represents the
true thrill oI the war ending, and how they celebrate-by kissing. The alteration oI the words used
on the valentine versus the postcard to show a more optimistic side oI the purpose oI the
valentine. Also to show that everyone can Iind love-that it`s not impossible and that every
person is capable oI Ieeling love and compassion towards someone in their lives. The pink,
heart-shaped gem stones used on the Iront oI the valentine are glued within the white paper
hearts. Detail can show someone how much you truly care about them; by using these gem
stones not only do they symbolize the beauty oI love, but show that love is 3-dimensional and
not Ilat, and that there are so many Ieelings and emotions behind it.

The advantages that are given by this valentine are crucial and clearly portrayed. What is
there not to like about a valentine? Looking back on Valentine`s Day in elementary school and
the Ieeling oI being treasured Ior at least that one day is superb. Hoping that that one person who
you like will give you one oI their special valentines creates butterIlies in your stomach,
excitement, and nervousness. The recreation shows how it Ieels to be loved, and how Iantastic it
is to show people how much you truly love them. Love is about giving and receiving, clearly
expressed by the valentine. The bright colors, sparkles, and intricate details all show how happy
a person can be when they are in love. Another advantage is that it contrasts the negative
viewpoints presented on the postcard. HopeIully, this aids other people, including the
anonymous author that being vulnerable and letting people in will help you Iind love. This could
be used as advice or a persuasive text- but nonetheless, a positive persuasion. A multitude oI
advantages are provided in the valentine genre, by just taking a simple look at it.
The disadvantages oI using a valentine as a genre are very slim. Some people may look
back and Ieel sadness due to one oI their love stories that ended poorly in the past. Another
potential disadvantage is that people are not understanding the vitality oI being vulnerable and
wearing your heart on your sleeve. The audience could be very closed-minded and not open to
allowing themselves to Iind love. The disadvantages could result in a tough deIense, but there
are many more advantages to the valentine than disadvantages.
Using the valentine as the new genre, adds to the message oI letting yourselI be open to
love. This happens because it is an adorable, love-struck visual aid towards what love is like. It
also adds advice to others, and expresses that love is possible Ior absolutely everyone. The only
message that would be taken away is the negative quote Irom the original text. A valentine is the
ideal recreation to the previous text.
