US paper, board capacity declined in 2008 for the eighth straight year and is expected to decrease in 2009. US capacity to produce paper and board moved down continuing an eight-year fall and is expected to drop by about 2.0% in 2009, according to the American Forest & Paper Assn's (AF&PA) 49th capacity survey. US capacity for 2009 is forecast to total 94.5 million tons (85.7 million tons) and, if so, China for the first time would surpass the USA with the largest single-country capacity of paper and board in the world. RISI's latest estimate puts Chinese paper and board capacity at 91.79 million tons this year, up from 85.97 million tons last year. (file 4-2-09 US Paper Decline 8 years.pdf) Producers are taking close to 1.5 million tons of containerboard downtime in North America in the first quarter, compared with nearly 1.4 million tons in the fourth quarter, according to the latest PPI Pulp & Paper Week estimate. Domtar CEO Plans Sale Of Wood Products Business--SAN FRANCISCO--Domtar's CEO John Williams said the company, the dominant uncoated freesheet producer and major market pulp supplier, plans to divest C$150 million in assets, the Canadian Press reported. The refocus would be mainly through divesting its wood products business. (File 9-30-09 IP Today.pdf) SAN FRANCISCO, (PPI Pulp & Paper Week)--Permanent containerboard shuts NOW TOTAL 2.0 million tons in North America since downturn in 4Q last year. North American containerboard producers have now scheduled nearly 2.0 million tons of permanent containerboard capacity closures since the market downturn began in the fourth quarter of last year -- with announcements of five more. International Paper has announced it will close 3 mills which will cost 1600 jobs. The Mills are Franklin, VA, with 1100 jobs gone by early spring 2010, and Pineville, LA, will lose 230 jobs, and the last mill in Albany, OR will lose 270 jobs. During the same length of time, Smurfit-Stone announces mid-December it will close the Ontonagon, MI. mill and the Missoula, MT. mill in which 417 lost their jobs and mill within a 3 week period.
