Kadeem Batts: Providence College mens basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley announced on November 5 that sophomore Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) has been suspended indefinitely for failing to meet his obligations as a student-athlete. Batts, a 6-9 forward, started all 32 games last season for the Friars. He averaged 7.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per game last season. Kiwi Gardner: It was announced on December 5 that the NCAA ruled that Providence College student-athlete Kiwi Gardners initial eligibility coming out of high school does not meet the NCAA Division 1 requirements. Thus, he is not able to appear in competition or practice for the 2011-12 academic year. Future Friars, Ed Cooley Has A National Ranked Recruiting Class: Providence College mens basketball Head Coach Ed Cooley announced on November 10, 2011 that student-athletes Kris Dunn (New London, Conn.), Ricky Ledo (Providence, R.I.) and Josh Fortune (Hampton, Va.), each signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Providence College beginning in September 2012. These three players make up one of the top recruiting classes in the nation. CBSSports. com rated Cooleys first recruiting class as the fifth best in the nation, while Scout.com has it ranked No. 8 and ESPN.com ranked the class as the ninth best in the country. It is one of the highest rated recruiting classes in the history of the program as the 1990 class (Dickey Simpkins, Michael Smith, Rob Phelps and Troy Brown) was ranked No. 4 in the nation and the 1974 class (Bruce Campbell, Bill Eason and Bob Misevicius) was ranked sixth. Dunn, a 6-foot-3-inch, 186-pound point guard attends New London (Conn.) High School where he plays for Head Coach Craig Parker. He is the top-ranked point guard in the country, according to Scout.com and CBSSports.com. ESPN.com has him rated as the No. 2 point guard in the class of 2012 and Rivals.com has ranked Dunn as the third best point guard. Last season, Dunn helped lead New London High School to a 27-0 record and a state title after averaging 26.5 points, 10 rebounds and five assists per game in 2011. For his efforts, he earned the New Haven Registers State Player of the Year honors. Dunn played for the Connecticut Basketball Club AAU squad. Ledo, a 6-foot-6-inch, 190-pound shooting guard is ranked as the No. 1 shooting guard in the class of 2012, according to Rivals.com. He also has been ranked as the sixth best shooting guard in his class by ESPN.com and Scout.com. CBSSports.com has Ledo rated as the 17th best player overall. Ledo attends the South Kent School in Connecticut and is coached by Kelvin Jefferson. Ledo played for the Expressions Elite AAU team. Fortune, a 6-foot-5-inch, 180-pound shooting guard attends Kecoughtan High School in Virginia where he is coached by Ivan Thomas. As a junior, Fortune averaged 13.9 points per game. Fortune is ranked as the eighth best player in the class of 2012 in Virgnia and the 34th best shooting guard in the class, according the ESPN. com. He played for the Boo Williams AAU program. Dave Gavitt Tribute: On September 16, 2011, Friartown lost an icon with the death of Dave Gavitt. He was known to most as a Hall of Fame coach, athletic director and administrator and for his foresight and vision which led to the formation of the Big East Conference in 1979. Although he is no longer with us, Coach Gavitts memory will live on in Friartown. This season, all Friar athletic teams will wear DG patches in honor of him. The mens basketball team will continue to play all its home games on the Dave Gavitt Court at the Dunkin Donuts Center and his retired jersey will always hang in the rafters. Friars On TV and Radio: This season the Friars will have 26 of their 31 regular season games televised. Cox Sports will be covering the majority of the games, with ESPN networks airing a handful. For the 23rd consecutive season Joe Hassett and John Rooke will be broadcasting all 31 games on 103.7 WEEI FM. Friars Led BIG EAST In Scoring: The 2010-11 Providence College men's basketball team led the BIG EAST Conference in scoring, averaging 75.8 points in 32 total games. That scoring average was good for 31st in the nation. In addition, the Friars averaged 72.4 points in their 18 BIG EAST games, a total that ranked second behind Marquette's 73.2 ppg. On March 22, 2011 Ed Cooley became the 15th head coach at Providence College. Cooley came to Providence College after spending five seasons as the head coach at Fairfield University. "When Bob and I sat down with Mike Tranghese and we talked about what we were looking for in our next coach, we quickly agreed that the No. 1 candidate for Providence College is Ed Cooley," Providence College President Fr. Brian Shanley, O.P. said. "I wanted a coach that could teach our players about the game of life. I also wanted a relationship builder and Ed is a relationship builder. He will connect with our players, our fans and the entire state of Rhode Island. I could not be more thrilled to have Ed Cooley as our basketball coach." Prior to coming to Providence, Cooley guided Fairfield to a school-record 25 wins and a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season title in 2010-11. He was named the 2011 MAAC Coach of the Year. He also earned United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) District I Coach of the Year honors. His 2011 squad finished the season with a 25-8 mark (15-3 MAAC) and advanced to the second round of the NIT. In five seasons at Fairfield, Cooley's teams posted a 92-69 mark, including a 58-32 record in MAAC action. Cooley became the first Fairfield head coach to guide the team to a .500 or better mark in MAAC action in each of his first five seasons. In 2009-10, he led the Stags to a 23-11 mark and the team's first post-season berth since 2003. In that win, Fairfield set a NCAA Division I post-season record as the team overcame a 27-point, second-half deficit to defeat George Mason in overtime. For his efforts in 2010, Cooley was the first recipient of the Ben Jobe Award, presented annually to the top minority men's basketball coach in the nation. Prior to taking the Fairfield position, Cooley spent 10 seasons as an assistant coach for Al Skinner. He coached for one season at Rhode Island under Skinner (1996-97) and nine seasons as an assistant at Boston College (1997-06), where the Eagles posted a 175-108 mark and advanced to five NCAA Tournaments and one NIT. Cooley also helped lead the Eagles to the 2001 BIG EAST Tournament title and three BIG EAST regular season titles (2001, 2003 and 2005). In 2004-05, Boston College started the season with a school-record 20 consecutive wins. In 2005-06, the Eagles advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game against Duke. At BC, Cooley was instrumental in the recruitment of Troy Bell, a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Year. Bell also went on to play professional basketball after leaving Boston College, which included a stint in the NBA with the Memphis Grizzlies. A 1994 graduate of Stonehill College, where he was a threetime captain for the basketball team, Cooley began his coaching career at UMass-Dartmouth. He helped lead UMass-Dartmouth to a 25-4 mark and a No. 3 national ranking (1994-95). He returned

What They Are Saying About Ed Cooley

"I love him. He was so classy when he was going to leave Fairfield. He called my wife and me and wanted to explain. I told him there was no explanation needed. This is a great place for him. He did a home visit with us and he's just a good guy. That's going to be a strong suit for him. I think he'll do a terrific job. He's going to be able to recruit, which is so important, and he knows the type of player he needs to win." ---Doc Rivers Boston Celtics Head Coach

Ed Cooley has an infectious personality, a driving spirit to work hard and win, and is one of the warmest people youll meet. You can scour the country and find plenty of hometown success stories of coaches coming back to their alma maters or places where they grew up. But there will be few that can match the authenticity of Cooley and Providence. --- Andy Katz ESPN.com Senior College Basketball Writer ``Ed Cooley is the ideal choice for Providence. He has that rare ability to connect with players, yet also command the respect that is needed to succeed at the highest level. It's not just the story of the local kid coming home; but a local kid who truly fits back home. Providence needs an outgoing coach that will go out, sell the program and also be able to land big-time recruits. I think Ed Cooley can do all those things and make Providence a player in the Big East." ---Jeff Goodman FOXSports.com Senior Basketball Writer

Theres a difference between working hard and being good at your job. Ed Cooley is good at his job and thats what sets him apart. He is considered to be an outstanding coach by his peers. He knows what it means to go out and evaluate studentathletes. --- Dave Telep ESPN.com Senior Basketball Recruiting Analyst
