Speaking Worksheet 2: Interview
This worksheet relates to the unit theme of studying and
working abroad. Students will role-play ajob interview fora
‘summer job at Sun Adventure Camps.
You will need:
‘One copy of the Speaking Worksheet per student
1. Brainstorm summer jobs. Why are they a good idea? Have
‘any students in the class worked during the summer? What
did they do? Was the experience positive or negative?
Divide the class in pairs and give students a copy of the
Speaking Worksheet.
2. Students take a few minutes to study thei role and to
consider additional questions to ask during the interview.
In pairs, they simulate a job interview situation
3. This can be developed intoa group activity by having a
panel of interviewees interview a selection of candidates.
They could choose the best one and explain their criteria to
the unsuccessful candidates.

When to use: Use this activity after Unit 9 Communication.
Time taken: 30 minutes
Photocopy one worksheet for each group of three students in the class.
Prepar
Procedure
Divide students into three groups ~ interviewers, interviewee A and interviewee B. If there
are any extra students, ask them to join the group of interviewers. Distribute copies of the
job advertisement among the students. Ask them to share and read the ad.
Give students in each of the three groups the appropriate role card. Ask them to read it and
check if they have any questions.
{Ask students to work with someone within their group and either prepare questions
(interviewers) or prepare answers (interviewees). When they have finished, ask one student
from each group to sit together so that there is an interview, an interviewee A and an
interviewee B together. If you have extra students, create one or two groups of four, with
two interviewers and two interviewees.
{Ask students to roleplay the interview. Monitor and note down any errors. When they have
finished, invite each interviewer to say which interviewee he/she would employ and why.

Procedures
+ Read through the instructions with the students. Brainstorm a list of interesting jobs with
the students and write them on the board.
‘ Put students in pairs and indicate who is A and B in each pair.
‘+ Have them choose the jobs they will be interviewing for.
* Have students individually complete the job application forms. Encourage students to
invent interesting information about themselves.
* After students complete their forms, have the A’s give their forms to the Bs. During
the interview, the BS should ask questions to check their partners’ information. Remind the
students to use tag questions to check information. For example, You're applying for the job
of teacher, aren't you?
'* Encourage the students being interviewed to add more details when they answer.
* After a few minutes, have the A’s and BS switch roles.

By the end of this lesson, learners will have practised
reading job advertisements and asking and answering
the kind of questions (in the second conditional)
asked at job interviews.
Materials

Procedure
TASK
Pre-teach / elicit vocabulary, spending some time on
SEN, which can cover: behavioural issues, attention
deficit literacy, or language needs.
Class read all the adverts quickly (set time limit of
two minutes) and answer the questions in pairs. Get
feedback from around the class.
Tell learners they will work with the interpreter
advertisement first — ask for ideas about the kind of
‘qualities and skills an interpreter needs, and write
their responses on the board,
Ask learners to read the advert again, and discuss
whether they could do this kind of job, and why or
why not.
Feedback, and lead class discussion of their
responses.
TASK 2
Give out one set of interview questions per pair.
Pairs discuss how they would respond to questions if
being interviewed for the interpreter job.

responses in the correct form.
Swap partners, and learners take it in turns to ask and,
answer the questions.
Monitor, and feedback at the end of the task, on
errors of form in questions and responses.
TASK 3
Divide class into A, B, C, and D groups.
Group A prepares to interview candidates for the
security officer job.
Group B prepares to be interviewed for the security
officer job,
Group C prepares to interview candidates for the
teaching assistant job.
Group D prepares to be interviewed for the teaching
assistant job.
® Instruct groups A and C that they should read the
relevant advert again and make six questions, at least
three of which should be in the second conditional.
Instruct groups B and D that they should read the
relevant advert again, and discuss what questions
might be asked at interview, and how they would
respond,
