Description of Test Method

This test is used to determine the LD50 of a substance by a single ingestion. LD50 is the Lethal Dose required to kill 50% of the test subject. This value is normally measured in mg/kg, which means mg of substance per kilogram of test subject. This test is used to determine the LD50 of a substance by a single dermal exposure (skin). This value is normally measured in mg/kg, which means mg of substance per kilogram of test animal. This test is used to determine the skin sensitization potential of a substance. Based on the outcome, a positive or negative result is given. This test is used to deterrnine the LC50 of a substance by an acute (short-term) inhalation exposure. LC50 stands for the Lethal Concentration required to kill 50% of the test subject. This value is normally measured in mg/m3, ppm or mg/L, which means mg of substance per m3 or air, ppm=parts of the substance per million parts of air or mg of substance per litre of air. This value is also reported with a duration, which is usually measured in hours. This most common duration is 4 hours. This test is used to determine the degree of irritation/corrosion of a substance. The result is normally based on a skin reaction grading scheme. This test is used to assess the mutagenic (i.e. changes in DNA or chromosome structure) potential for petroleum components.
