Abstract - In this lab we were to test the theory about damped oscillations and decay time. During this
lab we were to Iind the gravity, quality Iactor, decay time. We Iound the gravity to be 9.39 only .41 oII
Irom the actual value oI gravity, and the decay time to be 48.04. During this experiment we Iound the
period does not rely on amplitude only mass and the tension oI the string. The angle the ball was released
at does not matter what does matter the length oI the string Irom the ball to the rod.

Objective section - In this lab we were to test the theory about damped oscillations and decay time.
Procedure section We placed a tennis ball on a string and measured the distance oI the string and how
long it took the ball to go back and Iorth 10 times. We then changed the angle oI which we released the
ball at.

Discussion section - In the experiment we were to look at how damped oscillations aIIect objects along
with decay time. We began by Iinding the mass and the diameter oI a tennis ball and a StyroIoam ball.
We placed the tennis ball on a string and then hung it Irom several diIIerent heights and measured the
oscillation period. We took this results and then plugged them into graphical analysis to Iind a linear line
Iir which was y4.200x.9988. We Iound that period does not aIIect amplitude instead it aIIected by the
tension on the string and the mass oI the object at the end oI it. Next we changed the angle by 5 degrees
and Iound that angle didn`t really matter that much. We then removed the tennis ball and placed the
StyroIoam ball on the rod. Then we used radar to measure the damped oscillation oI it until it had decayed
by 20. We then placed these results in graphical analysis and Iound the mean oI it to be .2761. We then
plugged in the equation YAexp(-x/B)sin(CxD) to Iind A, B, C, D. A was equal to -.1130, B was equal
to 48.04, C was equal to 3.752, D is equal to -9.840. The independent variable was aIIected by the
dependent variable because we did several parts oI this lab several times such as when we changed the
length oI the string or then angle the ball was released at. We did not come across very many errors in this
lab we were able to complete it in a timely Iashion with the correct results.

Conclusion section -The objective oI the lab was met because we were able to see how damped
oscillation and decay time aIIect and object. We were also able to solve Ior g which was 9.39 on .41 oII
Irom the actual value oI gravity. We were also to Iind the decay time was 48.04 and the Irequency toi be
3.752.
