world Painted blood world Painted blood

Excellent. So are you excited about playing with Megadeth? Uh... y know no more excitement than playing with any other band. Its no big deal. We dont hang out together, were not socially active together or bandmates or anything. So Im more excited to be playing our own songs than playing with Megadeth. Tell us about the new album for those who are going to be lining up to buy it... how is it different from all the other Slayer records? You know this album is for me one of the best albums weve done in a long time and it takes me back to the Reign In Blood / South Of Heaven / Seasons In The Abyss albums; its that kind of feeling, and its really exciting man! I mean... I dunno if youve heard any of the songs, but World Painted Blood, Hate Worldwide, Beauty Through Order, Unit 731... all these songs are just very strong pieces and uh... (pause) hold on, Im driving here so you gotta excuse me... Im going about 80 miles an hour. (laughs) Ok. Here we go. Im set now. So yeah, the whole process of this record was amazing. Were super excited. Theres rumours going around that this could be one of the last Slayer albums; that there might be another two and then Slayer might be over... is there any truth to these rumous?

nless youve been living in a cave, youll be aware that SLAYER played in Auckland last month with Megadeth. Of course, with two of the big four Thrash Metal acts featuring on the same bill, the event quickly sold out. We spoke with Slayers legendary drummer Dave Lombardo prior to the concert, and heres what he had to say...
So are you guys looking forward to coming back to New Zealand? Absolutely. I love New Zealand. I think its great. Its really nice down there.
4

Yeah, those are rumours. Were not going anywhere. Im certainly not going anywhere. You guys are gonna have to deal with my drumming until I start looking like Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones. Were still going strong. We are a well oiled machine. We know what needs to be done, and were doing it. So you left Slayer for a while there and one of the reasons was a lack of money... Id say youd be making quite a lot of money off these tours these days right? Uh... it could always be better. Remember, record sales arent the same as they used to be because of the downloads, and were... (very long pause) INTERVIEW CO-ORDINATOR: Ok Brendon, you still there? BRENDON: Yeah I am. I dunno if Dave is or not... INTERVIEW CO-ORDINATOR: I dunno what happened mate. It just went quiet and then it just dropped off. BRENDON: He said he was driving at 80 miles an hour, so I hope hes allright! INTERVIEW CO-ORDINATOR: I hope he hasnt crashed! let me just see if I can dial back out for him now... BRENDON: Ok thanks... (another long pause) INTERVIEW CO-ORDINATOR: Ok Brendon, Daves back on the line. Sorry about that!
6

Thats Ok! So, lets talk about the Slayer albums that came out while you werent with the band. Do you ever listen to them? No. No I dont. I dont listen to those. I dont listen to those because I dont need to listen to those. I only listen to the songs I have to learn off those records, so I havent really listened to them. So many drummers credit you as being the man who really brought double bass into Heavy Metal. Many reputable drummers have credited you as an inspiration to them. Do you think that there is any more room for innovation in Heavy Metal drumming?

We are a well oiled machine. We know what needs to be done, and were doing it.
Theres always room for innovation, and it depends on the bands parameters; the band that you play with. Slayer has some parameters that we follow, boundaries that we dont cross, so what you try to do is get it as innovative and creative as you can with the borders that you are playing within. So theres always possibilities, evolutions and changes. Im always looking for them. But I dont focus on doing that. I just try to be the best I can possibly be at my craft and try to kick ass! ...and do it live, not do something in the studio and then not deliver live. Do you think youd want to explore any different genres other than what youve already played with your side projects? Always! Absolutely! I would love to do one day some Country. I have extended my drumming to Hank Williams III, and told him Hey man, if you ever need a drummer Im really looking at doing some kind of heavy Country - but whether its gonna happen... maybe, maybe not. But theres something I wanna do with Latin Jazz, world music, Blues... theres so much left for me to do.. and redo, so it never ends, at least for me. Your final message to the Slayer fans in New Zealand? My message is: be prepared cos youre gonna be blown away. We are going to kick some serious ass. Dave Lombardo is travelling with his drumset and not some rented drumset like last time, and were just gonna tear it up! g

o you remember Stryper? The band which looked similar to all the other Glam Metal groups of the eighties but had one major difference... they were all Christians, and their songs were focused on Christianity. It has now been 25 years since the band formed and they have just released a new album called Murder By Pride. We spoke with guitarist Oz Fox.
What are your thoughts on the new album Muder By Pride now that it is out? We are happy with the way it sounds. A lot of people are enjoying the new album. I
8

think its one of our best albums. Its an amazing time for us. How are you enjoying being back with reformed Styper? Just as good as the first time around? Yeah its great. Weve known each other for years and to be out doing this is quite an honour. Were all getting along pretty good, and its like a family thats been reunited. What are the touring plans? Are you touring internationally? I know that weve got some dates booked in Europe, and we were hoping that we would end up coming out towards Japan and Australia at some point, and hopefully New Zealand. Being a Christian Heavy Metal band on the road, have you seen a lot of the excessive rockstar lifestyle occuring in other bands? Or do those bands tend to hide the sex, drugs and rock n roll element when you tour with them? (laughs) Well, to be honest with you, there arent too many Christian rock bands that have toured with us because for the most part we have always had mainstream

acts who arent necessarily Christian with us. Best we would be is an example to them; hopefully weve been able to show them our faith. As far as Christian groups go, they dont all live the dedicated life they should live for Christianity. Its kind of a tough road in the world of Christian rock when youve got a lot of fans and theres a lot of things out there that could get in the way of your faith and dedication to God. That being said, I honestly think that when a band says that theyre Christian, youve really got to look at their lifestyle to see how they live their lives before y o u

believe that theyre a Christian rock band, or a Christian whatever... attourney, plumber... whoever says that theyre a Christian, and they dont live the life that you should be living as a Christian... then theyre a liar. Thats what the bible says. How do you feel about the critisism levelled against the band which has come from Christians? Jimmy Swaggart (a popular US televangelist) came out and one point declaring Stryper as Satanic - How does this kind of thing make you feel coming from people in your own religion? Its no different than what happened to Jesus Christ back in the

day. The Pharisees, who were the legalistic believers at the time said the same thing about Jesus. They said he had a demon in him. Christ had all of that coming his way in his time, so were in good company. I dont have to answer to those people; I answer to God. As long as Im obedient to God and I know that Im in Gods will, it doesnt matter what anyone says. And if anything, Jimmy Swaggart is one to speak about that, because he was found out doing things he shouldnt have been doing as well! What are your thoughts on bands who dont claim to be Satanic, but use the imagery as a gimmick to get ahead? Well as much as these groups say that they dont take it serious, or that its all a gimmick... some groups will say that its not their responsibility to guide people down any kind of path and that theyre just inspired to sing about what they are inspired to sing about, bla bla bla... Well the kid who is getting into their music and is listening to their words, being influenced to murder somebody, or kill themselves, or live a party lifestyle, or bang as many chicks / get it

on with as many guys as possible... this is the kind of influence that groups like this have. Whether they mean to or not, theres still people being affected by their music. They can say all they want that its not their fault, but if theyre waving that banner, and people are being influenced by it, then theyre doing it! They can say all day that theyre not influencing people but they really are. Its a cop out to try to say that theyre not to blame. I know because I was there; I was influenced myself as a teen to want to be in a Satanically themed band because I loved Black Sabbath. The great thing about Stryper is that everything we sing about inflences people to become Christian and points them toward Jesus Christ and the bible, and ultimately the bible gives you everything good for your life so that you can walk the path that God has intended for you to walk. It teaches you not to be self centred, think of others, and be a servant to all. Thanks for the interview Oz! Any final words to your fans in NZ? I really hope you enjoy our new albumMurder B y Pride and hopefully well be in your country soon. Keep on rockin! g

FILM REVIEW
ANVIL - The Story Of Anvil SUMMARY At 14, best friends Robb Reiner and Lips made a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the demi-gods of Canadian Metal, influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams. REVIEW by Brendon Williams This film has been hailed as the real life version of This is Spinal Tap which is an easy comparison to make. However, there is so much more to Anvils documentary; all in all it is very moving. There are genuine moments of humour, sadness, pride, joy, anger, frustration and embarrasment. Anyone who has ever been a part of anything which has not gained or maintained success despite extreme efforts will find plenty to relate to here. The documentary follows Lips and Robb, the two founding members of the Metal band Anvil, which rose to fame in the early eighties and then just as quickly fell into obscurity. During their short time in the spotlight they managed to be influential to many bands, but for whatever reason big time fame and fortune ended up eluding them.

Now in their fifties, working dead-end jobs and still chasing the Rock n Roll dream, the guys begin documenting their final struggle to make something of the band which they have invested their lives into yet seen so little return from. Whether you like their music or not, you wont be able to stop yourself from rooting for these guys as they do whatever it takes to etch Anvils place into music history. One of the best films youll see this year. Metal on Metal!!! mmmmm

ast issue we talked to Alice Cooper about his concert in Auckland. Well, those of you fortunate enough to go along to the spectacular sold out show would have also caught Shotgun Alley performing as the opening act. These impressive young gentlemen look set to take their music to the world. We speak with drummer Scotty Rocker...
Please tell our readers a bit about the band, and how it was formed.

November. It was Davie (former False Start) and myself (Cold By Winter, Streetwise Scarlet). Davie had asked me to sing a verse for the up and coming False Start album but as the weeks went on we found out there was a sound that we both had when writing that was more than what we were both doing in our other bands. Davie left False Start and Streetwise Scarlet was coming to an end so we started to write and record songs with our keyboard player (Davies little brother) Jimmy. We wanted the best members for our band so we spent time looking for the right mix. Late Jan 09 we had our line up with songs already recorded for the new boys to learn. That was the start. You recently got the opportunity to open for Alice Cooper when he performed in Auckland. What are your thoughts on that concert, and are there any highlights for you? Yeah that was a trip! I love Alice Cooper.

Trash was my 3rd album ever on cassette. We had gone for the support for that show and New Zealand promotor picked another band. Turned out that Coopers management were not happy with the choice in support act and went through the apps again. They found us and two weeks before the show we got told we had it. Was weird cos I had only just got over the fact we missed out. Shows that a lot of the time NZ cant pick up on a good sound when they hear it. The highlight for me was just playing. We met his daughter and she watched our show and hung out while she wasnt on stage herself but we never met Alice. In and out he was haha.

Youre going over to Los Angeles, California to perform with Steel Panther very soon. How did this all come about? Yeah, crazy huh?! We had made a plan to get over there and do a showcase for a few people in the industry etc. Our manager and I went to L.A a week before the Cooper show to do a weeks worth of meetings with all sorts of people. My personal goal for the trip was to get Steel Panther support at the Key Club when we were there. Like everything that has happened with Shotgun since we started, if something is said out loud it happens haha. Been so weird! Steel Panther seem to be a bit of a joke
13

Shotgun was formed last year around

band image and lyric-wise even though instrumentally their music is very well done, and their CD Feel The Steel has flawless production... how do you feel about the band? Are you happy to represent a slightly more serious side of Glam Metal? Oh they are super funny. Always in character and have both singing and acting to make their band epic! Yeah their new album Feel The Steel is sooo good. Their singer Michael Starr (real name Ralph Saenz) was in L.A. Guns and his voice is the best there is for that sound. When they do their covers he can do it better than the original singer most of the time. Also Satchel (Russ Parrish) played for the band Fight. So their sound really is that of 80s dudes in an 80s band. Shotgun Alley are influenced by all the 80s bands like Motley, Guns, Skid Row, Def Leppard etc but we also fuse it with the new sound so it is a lot different in some ways. We think this will work for us. How has the reaction to Shotgun Alley been locally? You must be the first Glam / Sleaze band around these parts since the days of Push Push! Is the band taken seriously by the staunch kiwi audience? You know the shit thing is the reaction to us here has not been that positive (by industry) at all. Like I said earlier we didnt get Alice first off til his manager asked for us. NZ On Air has turned us down numbers of times for grants. But there are
14

people here who really believe in us and the sound. Juice TV have been more than amazing and we also just did a self funded video last week for Look At Me Now with Andy Morton (Cobra Kahn) who has done amazing videos (Sommerset, Kitch, Young Sid) and also we re recorded the song at Redbull Studios. Redbull are another team that are really backing us. Overseas EVERYONE is excited and pumped for us to be there and things happen so much faster. And from day one we have always had a full house at our shows cos the people that like us are so mad loyal and we are only playing here for them. Just seems sad that we dont have all the back up here in the industry. I always look at it like The Datsuns and Flight Of The Conchords. No one heard what they were doing til they

blew up overseas. Datsuns never even got a grant til that point then all of a sudden they are on NZ on Air posters etc. Go figure, right? Do you have any recorded music available yet? When will we start seeing Shotgun Alley albums in record stores? Yeah Look At Me Now will be ready for download in a few weeks through Redbull. We are writing heaps for the album and also have a MASSIVE producer who wants to do it and really loves our songs. When the name comes out it will turn heads worldwide. Lets just say he has recorded heaps of the bands from the eighties era. ;) Music from the eighties is enjoying a

comeback in popularity at the moment. Do you think that perhaps Glam Rock appreciation is part of this wave and that it could just be a fad which passes after a period of time? The thing is since that era NO ONE has been able to make a sound any different that sticks. I mean everything is a fad for a time. For me this is the music i have listened to my whole life. Guns N Roses, Skid Row and Alice Cooper were my first tapes when I was 8. At 12 I saw Guns Use Your Illusion 1992 tour. When you go out to clubs and they play rock what do you hear? Eighties rock. Everyone loves it. I think there are mad loyal people that have never stopped listening to it then there is the new breed of kids just finding it. I think the timing is perfect! Shotgun Alley are ambitious enough to perform overseas. Most bands from New Zealand have had to take themselves out of NZ in order to achieve a higher level of success. Do you see yourselves ultimately living overseas, or is the plan to stay in NZ but tour overseas wherever possible? The plan is to be based over there as of next year. A lot of people are scared to just pack up and go but if you love what you do so much then run with it. There was a band on the North Shore who had two practices and said we gotta get out of here. They moved to Vancouver and on their first show got snapped up. They are now signed and touring with Creed. They are called Like A Storm www.myspace.com/ likeastorm.
15

Shotgun Alley have only been around for a short time, but you have already put together a slick image, established your sound, found management, and put on some great gigs with overseas dates lined up very soon. Some bands fail even to hold a lineup together much less get any progress in the areas youre already conquered. So whats the secret? In this day and age, do musicians also have to be businessmen?

signing with them they said their focus is outside of NZ and overseas. So we went in knowing that and understanding there will only be so much to do here. Its exciting and scary. I think the hardest thing is watching your friends in other bands do so well here and just waiting for your turn. The bigger picture is better! Thanks for the interview. Anything else youd like to add?

NILE Those Whom The Gods Detest

2009 Nuclear Blast Brutal Death focusing on ancient Egypt Nile delivers once again. Flawless performance, interesting arrangements, cool lyrics with haunting chants thrown in here and there. Still one of the strongest Death Metal acts. Max Thrasher - mmmmm

MILkING THE GOATMACHINE Back from the Goats

When you go out to clubs and they play rock what do you hear? Eighties rock.
I think for us we really thought about who was going to play in the band. Davie and I have done a lot here already so contact had been made years ago. You will never get a whole band on the same page but you can get the closest you can. Business is important these days so to get someone to work for you is super important. We have had our time of working through stuff already and are now ready to go smash it. Management came to us. In one week we had three lots contact us once our page was up on myspace. We went with The Brat Agency because they are so real and really LOVE our music. You need someone who loves it as much as you or it will just be a job for them. Without passion for music and love for each other nothing works. The Brats have worked with a lot for people from Killing Joke to Aerosmith and get our sound through and through. When

ARkONA Goi, Rode, Goi!

2009 Nuclear Blast I thought itd be some gay metalcore. What I got was galloping Death/Grind (Goat/ Grind?). Its brilliant stuff. Quite clever, even if its a joke. Strongly recommended! Check out the Surf Goataragua version! Waiting for Surfing Goat now. Max Thrasher - mmmmm

Bands here that are working hard, Just do it. Step out and get crazy! Hope to see you all at our shows in the future and keep in touch - www.myspace.com/shotgunalley g

2009 Napalm Quite interesting Russian Pagan/Folk/ Metal. Female vocals are mixed with grim male voice and traditional instruments. I dont think it will break boundaries, but it will help you kill time while waiting for the new Finntroll album. Max Thrasher - mmmMM

PITBULL TERRORIST C.I.A.

SIEGFRIED Nibelung

2009 Nuclear Blast While labelmates Milking The Goatmachine make Death/Grind entertaining and funny, Pitbull Terrorist try to pass as new something weve heard from Extreme Noise Terror and Brutal Truth 15 years ago. There are plenty of bands like that. Next. Max Thrasher - mmMMM

2009 Napalm Epic Metal, based entirely on Richard Wagners Der Ring Der Nibelungen. Very multisided record with massive arrangements, all sorts of different vocal parts and thunderous performance with cool interludes. Very nice! Recommended. Max Thrasher - mmmmM

MEGADETH Endgame

DORO Fear No Evil

2009 Roadrunner Any Megadeth is good Megadeth (except maybe Risk), and while some may think Dave Mustaine has turned soft since becoming Christian, theres no sign of it here. The only weak point is the cover art which is boring compared to their classics. Brendon Williams - mmmmM

2009 AFM Doro Pesch, the Queen of Metal brings the follow-up to and 2006s Warrior Soul. Highest quality hard rock (this time with loads of guests from Saxon, Arch Enemy, Leaves Eyes, Holy Moses, etc). Very cool, catchy record! Max Thrasher - mmmmM

ELIS Catharsis

2009 Napalm Elis lost their original female singer to a brain haemorrhage a few years back and pulled some dark Gothic Metal from the place that this experience took them to, which all plays out on this sad, yet strong record. Brendon Williams - mmmmM

17

VAINS OF JENNA The Art Of Telling Lies

2009 Raw Noise Records Pure Glam Metal at its best. I wish it was 1987 again and there were a million young bands playing this stuff. Instead we have only a handful, but Vains Of Jenna are at the front of the pack. Required listening! Brendon Williams - mmmmm

kISS Sonic Boom

THE 11TH HOUR Burden Of Grief

2009 Napalm Want to give up smoking? This brilliant Doom Metal album about a mans contemplations and thoughts after being diagnosed with terminal lung cancer is dark and scary, even to non-smokers. Massive sounds; awesome record. ONE FINAL CIGARETTE! Brendon Williams - mmmmm

2009 Universal Its still too early to tell if I really ike this one! Been 11 years since the last studio album... Kiss are trying to revisit the classic seventies sound here, and come very close to it. There are a couple of fillers, a cringe-worthy moment here and there, and Tommys guitar sounds like an Ace impersonation, but overall its a fun CD. It reminds me of recent Alice Cooper albums in that it has a strong old-school guitar rock sound about it. Paul Stanley is obviously still the stand out talent of the band and outshines Gene Simmons, although less obviously than when comparing their recent solo efforts. Brendon Williams - mmmmM

VARIOUS The Wrestler - OST

SCHELMISH Die Hsslichen kinder

2009 Napalm The first song sounded like mellow Rammstein, followed by a pop - punk inspired track, then some industrial Scottish Europop stuff... this band is impossible to classify because their sound is all over the place. Its not jaw droppingly good, but its certainly not boring either. Brendon Williams - mmmMM

2009 koch Records Great movie; great soundtrack. Someone really knew their Glam Metal when they pulled these songs together! From Quiet Riot to Cinderella, Firehouse, Ratt, Accept, Scorpions and more, there are plenty of great, classic songs here! Just ignore the rap tracks -haha! Brendon Williams - mmmmM

W.A.S.P. Babylon

DREAMCATCHER Dreamcatcher

18

2006 N/A French Metal band Dreamcatcher sent us this impressive EP from 2006 a couple of weeks back. Although it arrived so late, its hard to ignore; despite the raw production there is some very good songs here. Lets hope for a full length album soon. Brendon Williams - mmmMM

2009 Demolition Nice. When youve been in the business as long as Blackie Lawless and cemented your way into music history, its hard to release a bad album. Babylon is excellent stuff, still signature W.A.S.P., but offering fans loads of fresh meat. Only its not raw... its extremely well done! Brendon Williams - mmmmm
