Composing music for commoners, over the carnatic cloud
By Paddy Padmanabhan
The speech delivered by Sir Paddy Padmanabhan at the assembly hall was thought-
provoking and technical. The first thing that caught my attention is that he came into the
musical field because of his son’s influence. The story he mentioned about how radio takes
over the world over a period of time and how the radio technology was first restricted and
then gradually accepted gives me an idea of how AI will gradually be accepted by the
people and blend with everybody’s life. His idea of bringing music to everyone inspired me
athatbi can also develop something and bring it to the mass. He also mentioned how
mathematics is interlinked with music and how ratios were included in the musical notes.
The multimedia uses music to trigger some feelings among the people. I also liked his idea
on choosing a job; he mentioned that it should contain high learning skills and placement
should not be the only goal. He used a lot of hand gestures and used up the stage space
effectively, so I felt like the speaker should be given a mic attached to this shirt; a mic may
have been provided in his hand so that he can move freely while being connected to the
students.
How to achieve goals
The session Is about how to achieve your goals. The speaker mainly focused on how to
achieve our goals in a step-by-step fashion. He mentioned that the learning should be
more focused on the application part rather than just memorising and understanding the
concepts. He told us about the difference between lab work and project work. Lab work is
something that is well defined and has a proper pathway to reach the goal, but project
work, on the other hand, doesn’t have a defined pathway to reach the goals. The speaker
emphasised the importance of learning soft skills like communication, social skills,
leadership, etc. He suggested we join professional societies where we can get a lot of
exposure and opportunity and can connect with a lot of people. Through his speech, I have
learnt that I have to seek application perspective in everything I learnt in the class. I also
understand why I have to connect myself with some organisation where I can get a lot of
opportunity and a chance to work with lots of people as a team to build up my social skills
and team spirit
Tutor session
Saraya mam Your tutor started the session by introducing herself and gave some
instructions about how to behave inside the college and inside the class room. She gave us
many instructions.
Some of them are:
• Don’t use mobile inside the classroom.
• We should not be late to the class, or else we are given an absence on that day.
• Don’t smoke, consume alcohol, or get involved in any other unwanted activities.
• Students coming to college by two-wheeler should wear helmets and drive with
caution.
• Students should park their vehicles in the parking lot and make sure that they are
taking their own vehicles.
• Wearing an ID card is compulsory and an important thing to have because it acts as
an admit card for exams and other purposes.
• Should wear a formal shirt and shoes
• Should not sit or run in the hallway and should maintain disciplined behaviour
inside the campus.
• Should not take unnecessary leaves, and the students should maintain attendance
above 75%.
• We should not be involved in any type of ragging, and if we are subjected to ragging,
we should inform the staff.
Physics session
Physics Mam started the class with how physics is used in everyday life; she gave us day-
to-day examples where physics is integrated with our lives. Then she explained why we
should study physics as computer science students and how physics is used in computers
like the motherboard, the integrated circuits, and the hardware part of the computer. She
discussed conductors, conductivity, resistance, and how current is carried inside the
conductor and the electron flow inside the conductor. She talked about magnetic material
and some magnetic properties and effects. She then dwelled into the topic about
superconductors, where she asked about ceramic oxides, absolute 0 Kelvin, and zero
resistance. She then told about the application of the superconductor and explained the
working principle of the maglev train, where they use liquid nitrogen to cool the conductor
to attain zero resistance and use the repulsive force to lift the train off the ground and by
changing the polarity of the magnet attached along the railway to move the train forward.
From this session, I learnt about the importance of physics and how it is applied in the
computer field.
Universal human values
Self and body
The speaker started the session by explaining how human society is composed of families
living together in a relationship of mutual fulfilment, co-existing in a shared community. He
talked about human values, trust, respect, affection, care, guidance, love, and glory and
explained each term. He mentioned the difference between values and skills: values are
about participation, and skills are something like the technique of doing something. He
emphasised the importance of responsibility towards the family and your
self.Responsibility towards yourself includes taking care of yourself, having a good mind,
having a good body, overcoming our insecurity, etc. He also explained the difference
between desire and aspirations, where desire is something that is short-term, like getting a
high score or learning skills, but aspirations are a long-term commitment, like getting a
good placement or a healthy lifestyle. I also learnt about self and body. Self is not physical
in nature and needs things like trust, happenstance, love etc. to be fulfilled; it is in a state of
continuous happiness, and the feelings are quantitative in nature, but the body, on the
other hand, is physical in nature and need things like foods, clothes, etc. to survive; the
need may be temporary, and the things needed are required in limited quantity, like shoes,
rooms, cars etc.I also understand that I need to fulfil the needs of my body and self and
empower my desire and aspirations to become a successful person.
Universal human values
Gratitude
In this session on gratitude, I learned how recognizing and appreciating the good in our lives
can be powerful. Being grateful not only boosts our mood but also strengthens our
connections with others. We often overlook the small blessings around us, especially when
life feels routine. By practicing gratitude, we can shift our mindset, reduce stress, and feel
more content. The session shared personal stories and practical tips, showing how a
grateful heart can lead to a more fulfilling life. It made me realize that being thankful, even
for the little things, can change our perspective and create a more positive and supportive
environment.
Peer pressure
The session about peer pressure is given by Ramesh sir, where I understand how to handle
and manage peer pressure. He mentioned that peer pressure is a common issue among
students who have joined college for the first time because it is our first experience where
we step into a place with a lot of new faces with a vast range of differences as they came
from different backgrounds, place cultures, and religions. In the session, seniors also got
involved and shared their experience about their college life and how they tackled their
pressure. He also gave some suggestions to overcome peer pressure, like listening to the
guy feel, knowing your values and limits, believing in yourself, building different friendship
groups, etc. He asked to have a positive mindset throughout the years to have a fruitful life.
Student aspirations and understanding expectations
This session is quite interesting as the mam separates the whole class into 15 groups and
makes us sit in group-wise. She has done this so that we can get new friends and interact
with them easily. She first asked us to know about each other and asked us to repeat all
those names to test your memory power. Then she asked to know where they came from
and what their future goals were. The session is so fun and interesting. I am able to interact
with new people and know about them, where I am able to level up my social skills..
Maths session 1
In session we are introduced to our math sir, Mr. Palraj. He started the class by introducing
himself, and then he came to each bench to ask about each and everyone, like their name
and where they came from. Then he explained how math is integrated with computer
science and the importance of math in your life. Then he asked about what math is and
asked some basic questions, like the number system. After that, he started the topic of
calculus, where he asked questions on differentiation and integration and their
explanation. He asked about continuity of some functions like modulus, signal functions,
etc. He explained the syllabus and curriculum of math.
Alumini
In this session we get the chance to interact with three of the alumini.
Higher studies and placement
In this session, the sathiyapriya explained about the placement training and higher studies.
She explained that the students who opted for placement are given training like mock
interviews, tests, and mentorship from senior and placement training staff. She
encourages us to take part in an internship so that it will be an added advantage for us
during the interview. She mentioned that this year one of your seniors has bagged an offer
of 52 LPA, and some students were able to get an internship with Stiphen for 1 lakh per
month. She also explained how to involve you in the internship opportunity and to stay
focused throughout the year so that we can achieve your goal of getting a higher package.
Shebl also explained other training opportunities where we can get training for the
GRE/TOEFL exam so that we can fulfil our dreams of getting into our dreams university in
foreign countries.
IIC
In this session, I came to know about the Institution Innovation Council (IIC), which is an
important and prominent club in our college. Its objective is to conduct awareness
programs on innovation and entrepreneurship, provide the required resources to convert
the innovative ideas into prototypes, and a pre-incubation facility for innovators where your
ideas transform into physical products. The council was able to win a national-level
innovation competition on the first year of its initiations. She also explained about the
funding process, where we can pitch your product and raise funds from the government
and other companies. She also told me that special preference is given to inter-disciplinary
projects. We can also earn credit by opting for start-up-related activities. From this
session, I understand that there are a lot of resources and a huge support system to help
the students in their project and to transform their ideas into reality.
Chemistry 1
This class, your chemistry mam, introduces us to how chemistry is integrated with
computer science and its application on computers. She brushed up on your basic
chemistry knowledge and gave some information about semiconductors and the organic
compounds used in them. Then she gave us a question paper with 20 questions and
created a team of 4 members to finish it. The answer consists of the first 20 elements of the
periodic table. The session is interesting and interactive, and I was able to work with my
classmates to solve the questions, then she announced the mark for each team.
English 1
In this session, your English mam started the class by introducing herself. Then she started
the class about communication. She explained the concept of I+1 rules, where we first
need to find out our current level of proficiency and add some small steps to prove it. She
also told us about the bucket concept, where we need to first empty our mind so that we
can fill it up with new ideas and concepts. She explained about 3P’s like prepare, practice,
and presentation. She suggests some ideas, like hearing for feedback, facilitating
interaction, tuning your approach, etc., to improve my communication skills and to
become a master of language.
English 2
In the second session of English, mam talked about how to mastery communication skills.
She first told us about a website to find your current level of proficiency, so that we can
upgrade yourself using I+1 rules. Some of the skills she mentioned to mastery
communication are conversation skills, story telling skills, persuasive skills, negotiation
skills, assertive skills, deflective skills, questioning skills, redirecting skills, emotional
regulation skills, and verbal thinking skills. Through this session, I am able to get a road
map to become a mastery in a language.
Chemistry 2
In this session, Mam gave us a brief introduction to the semiconducting material used in IC.
She brified about the classification of chemistry—the organic and inorganic parts of it. She
then briefly explained about each unit and their subtopic, how the tests are conducted, and
how we should prepare for our test. They explained how the tests are conducted, how the
grades are given, and how much mark we should score, and gave us an idea about how to
prepare for the examination.
Maths 2
First aid awareness program
The program started with a welcome speech by the college principal, followed by an
introduction to the ALERT team. The trainers from ALERT explained the basics of first aid,
including how to treat cuts, burns, and fractures. They also demonstrated CPR
(cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and how to use an automated external defibrillator
(AED).Students were given hands-on practice with the equipment and techniques. The
session was very interactive, with many students asking questions and participating in the
demonstrations. The trainers emphasised the importance of staying calm and acting
quickly during emergencies.Overall, the program was very informative and engaging. It
helped us understand the importance of first aid and how we can make a difference in
emergency situations. We are grateful to ALERT NGO for organising this valuable session.
Orientation
The event aimed to welcome us and help us get familiar with the college.
The orientation program for the new batch of students at PSG College of Technology was
held on August 25, 2024. As a new student, I was both excited and nervous about starting
my journey at one of the most prestigious engineering colleges in India.
Address by PC
The session started with the sir introducing himself about his life journey, like where he
studied what are the job roles he had taken in his life and his working experience. Through
this, he explained that we can’t know what’s next for us, life will be unpredictable, and we
can’t plan your whole life path. Then he introduces us to programming languages and how
they are used. He gave some sample code and told some effective ways to reduce the
processing time of the code, so that we have become an effective programmer.
