Quiz No.

3 (Closed book quiz): Name:

Q1. A circuit is given in Fig.1, calculate the current IB, IC, IE., VCE, VE, if =50

C
A
B E

N
Fig.1
Solution:

Put some labels to the circuit.

Since terminal A is connected to ground => VA=0.

Assuming transistor is in active mode

Loop I:
VAN = VA- VN = 0- (-10) = 10V
VAN = 10 (V) =VAB + VBE +VEN = IB*1(K)+ 0.7 (V) + IE*10 (K)
IE = IB+IC =IB + *IB
=>VAN = 10 (V) = IB*1(K)+ 0.7 (V) + (IB + *IB)*10 (K) = 0.7 (V) + IB*(1(K)+(1+50)*10(K))
10−0.7
 I B= =0.0182(mA )
511(K )
 I C =¿ I B=0.91(mA )
 I E =I B + I C =0.928(mA)

Loop II:
VMN = 10- (-10) = 20 (V)
VMN = VMC + VCE + VEN
=> VMN = 20 (V) = VMC + VCE + VEN = IC* 5 (K) + VCE + IE*10 (K)
=> VCE = 20 (V) - IC* 5 (K) - IE*10 (K) =0.91 (mA)*5(K)- 0.928(mA)*10 (K) = 6.17 (V)

VEN = IE*10(K) = 9.28 (V)= VE-VN

VN = -10 (V) => VE = -0.72 (V).

VCE= VC – VE = 6.17 (V)

VE = -0.72 (V) => VC= 6.17 (V) -0.72 (V) =5.45 (V)

Since VCE >0, transistor is in active mode.

Q2: Draw the circuits at AC

Fig 2.a Fig.2.b

Solution:
To draw the circuit at AC, we need to remember:
1. The DC sources are connected to ground.
2. Large value of the capacitor blocks the DC current (open circuit) and acts as short circuit
for AC signal.
Prove:
1 1
ZC = =
jωC j 2 πfC

 For DC source when f=0 Hz

1
ZC = =(ohm)
j2 π∗0∗C

 Open circuit ( )

 For AC source when f ≠ 0 Hz, C is large, tend to 

1
ZC =
j2 π∗f ∗¿=0 (ohm)¿

 C acts as a short circuit: ( )

3. Model of a transistor for AC signal:

a. Draw the circuit at AC

1. The DC sources are connected to ground.

2. The capacitor acts as a short circuit

iC=ib

b. Draw the circuit at AC

iC=ib

Q3: Given Fig.2.a, calculate the output voltage vout if vin =10sinωt (mV). =200. IC=0.7 (mA)

Solution:
Circuit at AC
iC=ib

VT VT
r ❑= = −3
IB 25.10
I C /¿= −3
=7.14(K )¿
0.7 .10 /200
v ¿ 10 sinωt (mV ).
i b= = =1.40 sinωt (μA)
r❑ 7.14 (K )

v o=−β ib RC =−200∗10 ( K )∗1.40 sinωt ( μA )=2.8 sinωt ( V )
